Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

Macro ferts or iron dosing

is it possible with enough filtration to not do any water changes for saltwater? I don't know anything about salt water tanks really.

Not generally, as far as I know. Salt isn't my area of expertise either, though.
>>
Just got back in the hobby and set up a 40 gallon 3 weeks ago and i have a question, There's some things i forgot about cycling.

>cycling tank for 3 weeks now
>used seachem stability for the first 7 days as directed on the bottle
>added 5 black skirt tetras and then 5 more a week later
>haven't lost any fish
>they're eating and pooping and seem really healthy
>water is very cloudy at the moment which is normal if i remember right
>do a water test yesterday it everything comes up all zeros????

so what should i do at this point? should I do a water change or let the bacteria bloom do it's thing? It's weird that I came up all zeros, shouldn't nitrates be present?
>>
>>2324000
Yeah. Consider continuing the stability dosing until you start to see nitrates.

This is straight from seachem, someone with the same issue.

I'm not poor is the funny part. But honestly, I really can't be mad at her, she's having some legitimate memory problems that the doctors are trying to help with, and she was just trying to help. I didn't even say anything after she got him, just let her see him swimming around.

When I get the ten gallon I'll just tell her I found it on sale or something so she doesn't feel bad.

And no, Dory is out of the goddamn question.

>>2323908
Alrighty. He's swimming around trying to..push? Out of the glass? I can't tell if he's still a little stir crazy from being in a cup or if he's bored and wants more space.

He stops and watches me whenever I come up to the glass, and follows me if I move around or move my hand. He did look inside the plants a bit for a few minutes earlier, but now he's pacing again. If fish pace.

Hey /an/ I don't normally post here so I'll ask here to not shit up the place.

Is it normal for apple snails to devour their own tentacles? I just witnessed my snail chomp on a good portion of his left tentacle(a good 10 or so cm) seemingly unaffected by it. I'm totally in shock right now. I feed him regularly and up until now he's never had any problems. What the actual fuck?
>>
Passed by a local petstore nearby to pick up some supplies and noticed they had 4 fucking Indian Mudskippers (first time I ever saw mudskippers in person or sold anywhere really) They looked healthy but were being kept in a critter cage, so don't know how long they'll last in there.
I almost wanted to impulse buy them but don't have space or know anything about them.

Anyone know how difficult is mudskipper care experience wise?
>>
>>2323988
I don't think this is possible. Not realistically, anyway, unless you have a waste water treatment facility in your backyard.
>>
>>2324093
I figured if all the solid waste is removed and there's enough filtration I could keep the water.
>>
>>2324098
You will end up with some sort of imbalance somewhere and then you'll need to waterchange to rectify it.

Basically I'm looking for ideas, so far I've only come up with rope fish which I'd have to order online. I have three upside down catfish, two sterbai cories, two emeralds, a bunch of amanos and ghost shrimp, one lone cherry shrimp, one mystery snail, and like 4 nerites living in the 55 currently that will be transferred to the 75. I need something that won't bother my upside down catfish, snails, and shrimp. The cories I can move elsewhere since the sterbais used to be my brother's and I think he'll be mad if something eats them.

Or I'm open to having a creek tank and just taking everything from this creek nearby (pic related).

Suggestions? Experiences with rope fish?

you can get it down to where you're only doing a change a year pretty easily.

that level of filtration is way more difficult and expensive than water changes though.

>>
>>2324330
>I know how to cycle and I did it properly
this isn't possible with those levels of chlorine.

any level high enough to kill fish will absolutely kill bacteria. Like the bacteria that cycle your tank.
>>
>>2324332
It's possible your tapwater has chloramine rather than chlorine, but this shouldn't be a problem since all modern conditioners I've seen treat both.

Chlorine isn't a likely killer of your fish because it evaporates out of water in about an hour. Chloramine is possible, but again water conditioners should get rid of that.

I would be testing my tank water (not my tap water) for chlorine/chloramine.

fish can burn themselves against a malfunctioning heater. Not saying that's what happened, just be aware it's possible.
>>
>>2324350
pretty acidic. I'd wonder how it compares to your tapwater.
>>
>>2324357
>Would their skin be peeling white?
yeah, heater burns I've seen produce white peeling skin and often open pink lesions underneath. In straight lines where the fish touched the heater.

it only happens if the fish physically swims against the heater while it's on. It would be weird for lots of fish to be doing this unless your heater is always on and they like to hide behind it.

it's also possible your betta isn't affected because he's the one causing the injuries.
>>
>>2324362
>Shit, must be the heater then.
not necessarily.

heater burns don't spread to the whole body and they don't usually kill in one day.

I'm not sure what does that. I'd be checking everything in that tank to find out though.

Reposting because I posted in the wrong thread.

So, shrimpanon here, I told my roomate about my idea of keeping some awuatic plants and shrimp in a jar and he brought this... floorvase or
something home from a thriftstore. It's about 3 feet tall, 3 inches at the narrowest, and 8-9 inches wide at the bottom. I'd say it's at 2.5-3.5 gallons, and he seems pretty adamant about putting aquatic plants and maybe a fish in it. What can I put in this? Any plants/shrimp or snails that could handle a tall vertical tank? He seems to want a fish, but no fish could live in this, right?

Get a gallon jug and fill it, then you'll know exactly how much water. But really, you won't be able to see much with a green vase, so plants would be the best thing.

If he can find a clear, minimum gallon, bowl of some kind, you can plant it and put two/ three cherry shrimp. But two gallons would be much better, and of course more is always better.

Just tell your roommate colored glass isn't good for aquarium stuff cause you can't see shit in it .
>>
>>2324406

How do I keep my piranhas entertained? It's such a boring life. They just chill in one corner of their tank 24/7.
I have two, both in 30 gallons. When they were younger I had them in a 20 gallon together, but they rapidly grew big and started giving each-other territorial nips, so I separated them (one in a 5 gal bucket) for about eight hours until I was finished getting a 30 gal set up. When I put them both in the same tank, they tried to kill each-other so I just separated them permanently.
I used to use a low power laser pointer that they would chase, but my bigger one got too over excited chasing it and ran into the tank wall at maximum speed and six of his teeth fell out! I feel terrible! I am really averse to giving them live fish (they get brine shrimp cubes, tubifex worms, whole dried shrimp, and occasionally live meal worms.)
I have an old mirror I used to entertain my male betta, but I'm afraid they will flip out and hurt themselves against the glass again.
Any ideas? They get really active if I unplug the filter, but I have to keep it plugged in because they are messy eaters and their tanks get gross if I leave it unplugged for any extended amount of time.

Hey John Bone anon, why don't you get a ten gallon from walmart (they're like $15) and transfer your betta over to it, then give your roomy your old setup with a bit of the water and gravel so it's already cycled. Then everyone's happy.

Or, your roommate could get a full 5 gallon set-up from walmart with filter and lights already included. But those are like $50.

I got a testing kit for the first time and to be fair i've been slacking on water changes, so after seeing the nitrates were as high as the little chart went (160 ppm iirc) I did a nearly 100% water change and retested just to be sure. Retested after a little bit and got nearly the same reading. Shouldn't it change a LITTLE after clearing nearly the entire tank out? If not water changes, what the hell else am I supposed to do?

A ten gallon tank at walmart is only $15, API Quick start is about $10, And a small whisper filter and betta heater will run you probably $20.

Or you can get a full 5 gallon set up with filter and lights at walmart for $50.

My heater failed and killed my fish about a year ago, so I restarted my 75 gallon with no heater. It stays at 68 degrees surprisingly well. Any fish recommendations besides goldfish? Right now I have 4 denison barbs, 8 cloud fish and 3 weather loaches. I tried flagfish, but they are assholes. I need peaceful fish that are ok with cooler water.

Nigga that's as basic bitch of a tank size you can get for anything. (Sure they can be in less than that but a 10g is still small as fuck in the space it takes, more than enough room for the betta, large enough size to endure fuck ups much better, and so readily available it should not be expensive for an entire setup. Hell they can sometimes be cheaper than a 5g setup)
You just want to slap the fucker in a vase and call it a day, don't you?

You can catch one on craigslist for ten bucks or less. A 10g isn't excessive -- there are no fish suitable for tanks smaller than that. Bettas CAN survive in smaller tanks, but dogs can also survive in puppy mills. That doesn't make it acceptable or ideal. Larger tanks are also easier to maintain, which is useful when you're fucking retarded.

>puppies can comprehend sadness
Yeah, sure.
Any animal with nerves can process discomfort. And being in an unclean, tiny tank full of its own shit is certainly discomfort. I can't imagine ammonia burns don't qualify as discomfort.
Your betta is inactive because it's winter and he has no heater. Any fish is inactive in those conditions. Bettas are also more active in tanks with lots of cover, which i'm assuming yours isn't.
>>
>>2324745
Dogs can get sad, not on a deeply complex level clearly, but they feel the emotion. Fish don't, but that doesn't mean I want him to suffer in any way.

He has since began moving, but not as much as I'd like. He takes a lot of breaks. The tank he's in is a 5 gallon with a fair amount of plants that he likes to swim around. Not sure how many is adequate tho, I'd still like to be able to see him.

Is the reflection fighting something to worry about or is that just regular behaviour?

Rinsed the new sand I added, but there's still dust fucking everywhere (about like pic)
Would it be a bad idea to turn on my HOB filter? Would the fine dust fuck up my impeller?
Should I just wait it out and let it settle?

Also, how anal retentive should I be about actual air bubbles trapped in the sand?
Will they turn anaerobic, or is that just from stuff rotting?

>>
>>2324758
A puppy "comprehending sadness" is different than an adult dog being depressed when its owner dies.
I wouldn't worry about the reflection fighting -- there's not much you can do about it anyway. He'll probably start coming to the front of the tank when he sees you once he realizes you = food. They have a lot of personality, so his activity level and shyness depends on the individual fish. Personally, I noticed a huge difference in my betta's mannerisms after I moved him to a 10g. He's much more personable and always comes up to the tank when he sees me, which he did not do in the smaller tank.
>>
>>2324761
The filter would probably create enough current to keep the dust from settling if your filter isn't fine enough to catch it; better to just let it do its thing for now.

A 2.5 or 5 gallon tank is arguably good enough for a betta if it's heated, filtered, and well-maintained, but the cost of properly setting up a proper 2.5 gallon tank vs a 10 gallon is pretty negligible, and the 10 gallon is going to be less maintenance, so it's more a matter of "why not?"

Used heaters and filters are usually fine. Whether or not it's any cheaper depends on your area. You can find stuff really cheap on eBay and similar that all works just as well, but then you have to wait for shipping.

Maybe. In that case Jonbone anon and Dory anon have two very similar looking vases (>>2320396).

>>2324440
I actually have 2 cherry shrimp in a half gallon tank on my kitchen windowsill. They've been there for several months at this point, so the vase would probably work. I'd suggest getting floating plants for it and filling it to just above the widest point to promote better gas exchange. A small marimo ball would also help with oxygen levels.

The five gallon jug might be better, but siphon water changes will only work if it's raised, like on a table, and it would be very difficult to arrange anything in there or add/remove stuff unless you cut the top off. The blue color also isn't the best for viewing.
>>
>>2324870
A 2 gallon tank is too small for any fish. Most beginners also aren't competent enough to properly maintain a 2 gallon and it's certainly much, much more work. A 5 gallon is "good enough" but like you said, the price difference is small and it doesn't really make sense to go with a smaller tank.

I would guess they're raised in tanks with sponge filters and daily water changes, and I have no doubt you'd need specialized live food you've raised for them.

Dude, I do freakin love him. Like, this little guy is awesome, I really didn't think fish could be this interactive.

I think what I'm going to do is get two ten gallons and make one a shrimp tank, one tank for him, and I am going to give this set up to a friend who has a betta in a small half gallon vase. She loves that little fish, but she's done zero research and her house is freezing. But I also know she isn't the type to take an actual tank because it won't look good, so I think she'll like how this look and transfer him over.

Poor think won't even eat half the time, and I've tried convincing her to do stuff without crossing the social line and being rude. But I think I can get her to do more if I just give her 'gifts'. I'll bring some bloodworms and cherry shrimp over and disguise it as a gift, or some new plants or toys once in a while. I'll think she'll get more into it too once she sees him moving around more and being more interactive.

Okay. Not much. Crayfish are evil fuckers and will kill and eat everything. If you're into rarer and more unique you can look at Congo puffer. There's a few types of this puffer. Not so much aggressive, but a small turtle like a musk turtle or a male southern painted. They tend to eat most fish tankmates as they're more on the carnivorous end of omnivores and also fairly territorial to othe turtles. Musk turtles are also like miniature snapping turtles in that they walk/climb instead of swim, similar head, and can snap at you fairly hard for a small turtle if provoked (more likely they'll just musk though) . Also generally far more hardier than fish as they're less sensitive to water quality

It has some manchild appeal if you like TMNT alot or reptile monsters

What has changed except for the size? Start ruling stuff out. Did you give it enough time to cycle? Is there something wrong with the tank itself, or something in the filter? Did you change the source from where you were getting your fish/supplies, or if you are using tap water, has the city been doing any changes to the water?

Maybe start over one more time then. Empty the tank and scrub it down with vinegar water, get new gravel and maybe some new filter parts. I don't know what to look for in a good filter, but maybe you should toss it and try a filter from one of your other tanks. That is really weird to me, seeing as Bettas and plants are generally hardy as fuck.
>>
>>2325520
This seems like a dumb question but did you clean it with soap or anything? The fact that even bettas died is kinda odd.

/aq/ agrees unfiltered bowls and vases are worthless for keeping fish in but aquarium companies make hundreds of millions of dollars selling them anyways.

or replaceable HOB filter media that we all know kills the entire biofilter each time you replace them. Much better to rinse them off and keep the bacteria alive. But filter manufacturers make millions selling those new plates.

There's a reason they train you to change your water constantly. They know this stuff doesn't work.

>>
>>2325618
quick start is harmless, and it's actually quite useful in a few situations. It just doesn't speed up the cycle much, if at all.

The way to get it to work is to make sure you have readable ammonia BEFORE adding it to the tank. Otherwise all those bacteria you added don't have anything to eat and they promptly starve. Using fish food to start the cycle, you'll probably have to wait over a week after you start feeding the tank before you get any measurable ammonia. Fish food isn't made of ammonia, you need time for bacteria to start eating it and turning it into ammonia. By that time the sorts of bacteria you find in that bottle of quick start are already well established in your tank because they're found in the air, on your skin, under your fingernails, pretty much everywhere.
>>
>>2325625
>what do you mean by this?
If your biofilter dies you probably won't notice because constant water changes get rid of the ammonia and other toxins that would normally tell you there's a problem.

changing water covers up all kinds of problems. You'll never even know they happened if you keep up on water changes.

Shape the sand so that it makes a kind of hill or mountain in the middle of the tank, and essentially separates the tank in half. Then, on one side, add some plastic, gravel, a gentle slope, and brackish water.

On the other side, more plastic, gravel, freshwater, heater. filter, betta fish, a small school of neon tetras, and plants.

on the brackish side, some suction cup caves and climby things, three to four fiddler crabs...

ok.

Tell it to me straight

Disaster of an idea? Or genious?

I consider myself a beginner reefer having been doing this for about a little over a year. I made the horrible mistake of buy green star polyps and placing them on the main rock formation thinking that their growth rate was exaggerated. Now I have been dealing with their growth for a while. I have a bubble coral and frogspawn placed for damage control, but will they slow down the GSP at all? Is there any alternative to controlling these things that doesn't require constant manual cutting or scrapping?

Are there any strip lights like pic related that can ACTUALLY grow aquarium plants (and I don't just mean java fern, java moss, etc)?

Or, if you want a planted tank, is it really necessary to just go ahead and ring up some of those shop lights?

>>

Is there somewhere better than craigslist to get cheap fishtanks?
>>
>>2325654
You'd have to silicone a piece of acrylic or glass in the center of the tank to separate the two halves adequately enough to prevent the brackish and fresh water from seeping through and mixing, and you couldn't have anything come too close to the top of the acrylic barrier because the crabs might climb over it and fuck up the betta/tetras. So you're better off just getting two 2 ft long tanks and putting them sect to each other. If you scape them as if they're continuations of each other it could still look interesting, and suction cup caves and whatnot are fine.

>>2325655
Anything rated for 10 lbs for each gallon the tank is will work. Most old-fashioned, solid wood furniture is plenty sturdy enough. Personally I wouldn't trust particle board with anything over 3 gallons but I'm pretty sure others have done it.

>>2325764
Why wouldn't that grow plants? I've grown tons of plants with just screw in CFLs. Fluorescent tubes aren't going to be any worse than that.

>>2325773
Most big stores have a 60 or 90-day return period, why not just exchange it? Like >>2325775 said, make sure it isn't just stray silicone first. Run your hand along it and use a razor to scrape it off if it is. If you do end up needing to repair it, you'd have to get a sheet of glass big enough to cover the crack and silicone the whole thing over the crack. It would be very ugly.
>>
>>2325615

My bichir is 1 year old and been with 10 black neon tetra and two angels since day one. Nothing ever came up missing. What live food can I order for my betta and how would I go about keeping it long term? I keep seeing stuff for bloodworms and brine shrimp, but I'm not sure which types to order (like in a can, freeze dried, live), and I don't know how to keep these foods good. I'm sure one betta won't be able to eat very much, but I want to vary his diet, so I want to get at least two or three different types of food.

Any advice on ordering/storing? Keeping stuff live (except for some cherry shrimp that I plan on raising eventually) is going to be a bit difficult...
>>

For live food, how about brine shrimp eggs? You can hatch them as needed. Freeze dried and frozen foods will tell you on the package how long they're good for and probably how to keep them best.

Told the owner to put it on hold so I could study up and purchase him. I was a litter worried because he was lethargic when I got back to make the purchase, but I managed to nurse him back to health and get those vibrant colors out again. Best $75 dollar investment so far.
>>

I have to agree. When you buy a fish you take it's lifespan into consideration. If you get bored of it and insist on restocking, at least make sure you find a good new home for your current fish. Plenty of people out there glad to get new fish.

I had this exact choice earlier this week. I have a really pretty snowflake clown in my tank right now, and I had the opportunity to buy a lightning maroon clownfish pair for $90 through my distributor ($500 retail), but they would certainly kill my snowflake. So I had to decide to sell/trade my snowflake quickly, and buy the maroons, or keep it. I decided to do the right thing and keep my snowflake. Luckily yesterday Sustainable Aquatics sent us some fancy longfin clownfish (brand new crazy designer clownfish. So know I'm getting one of them, and hopefully I can be the first to make fancyfin snowflake clownfish :)

There's literally noting wrong with trading in livestock though.

>>
>>2326006
>the hobby
No. That's what people who buy 6 goldfish for a 10 gallon do, not people who are into the hobby. That's like comparing somebody who likes to step on kittens to a trophy hunter. Even most novice fishkeepers -- when they're actually into the hobby and care about their fish -- won't pull this shit. If you can't commit to an animal, don't purchase it. If you're tired of these ones, you'll get tired of the next ones and flush them down the toilet too.
>>
>>2326073
Shop owners typically don't like taking in your old livestock, for reasons I've already stated. Maybe freshwater stores are more lax when each tank has maybe $20 worth of livestock, but systems in my shop have upwards of $10,000 worth of fish and corals in our tanks at any given time.
And whats cancerous about sustainably breeding attractive fish? I have 4 systems myself, one of them being a 12g (30g system) breeder setup. Not to mention a spare 500g system at my shop thats currently not being used and has 8 spare tanks in it.

every fish store I've been in has a tank full of giants people have traded in. Got too big so they brought them back.
>whats cancerous about sustainably breeding attractive fish?

>>
>>2326098
I'm not the owner, no. But I've worked there for years, and the owner does view me as the son he never had. I can't do anything wrong at the store hardly. Or, at least nothing I'll actually get in trouble for. I invite friends over to the shop when I close and we smoke in it all night looking at corals under the actinics. Theres one store in my area that has a large tank for peoples old fish, but its display only, and you either have to pay to have a fish put there (literally), or it has to be a really expensive, rare fish and the chinese store owners will then take it for free. It's to expensive for a saltwater store to have a dedicated large species tank, especially when so few people have large tanks. We only have like 6 clients with tanks that are 500 gallons+, and only 2 2,500gal+ systems. So selling adult fish really isn't our business. Its slightly easier for a freshwater store to pull off.
>>
>>2326098
Theres only two fish stores in my area out of maybe 15 stores for both freshwater and saltwater that have huge tanks dedicated to monsters. Definitely not every fish store ive ever been to, or even close.
>>
>>2326102
nobody trades in oversize SW fish. If they trade something it's because it didn't get along with the others. It's kinda weird having to explain this to someone that's pretending to work at a fish store.

Had a rope fish for about a year. we put him in our 60 gallon and all of a sudden our population of neon tetras started to diminish but we didn't care because the rope fish was well worth it and he didn't mess with anyone else. One day we went on vacation and we left our hood open to accommodate an automatic feeder, when we came back after a week we found him curled up on the floor dead. They're notorious for jumping out of tanks, they do have lungs and can survive on land for a little bit. They're tough fish, before upgrading our filters to canister filters we had a regular Marineland penguin filter in which he swam up the current of the water flowing out and into the filter.
