My dog hates being hosed off but sometimes she needs it like if she gets muddy at the dog park, or salty from the ocean. How do I get her comfortable with it? I'm guessing I should start with the water on her paws, lots of high value treats, and work up to it. Need guidance.

>>2324542
You could feasibly do this if you're dedicated enough, but you will have to make sure to take the dog out to get enough exercise everyday when you are home.

Do you live with anyone else? If not, I don't suggest getting a puppy since a puppy will need to be taken out every couple of hours to housetrain it, and will need lots of attention/training that you won't have time to do.

If you get an adult dog though, you just need to make sure to give him enough mental stimulation and physical exercise daily to suit his needs. GSDs are active, intelligent dogs, so keep that in mind. Incorporate mental exercise into your physical exercise and play with him--mindless running will take a LOT longer to tire him out than including training games in your time with him. Another thing to do to keep his mind occupied is offer puzzle toys for him to play with, especially during the day when you're not home.

And yes, GSDs are notorious for shedding a lot. They need to be routinely brushed to get rid of all that loose dead hair.

So it's doable, but may not be easy if you're not used to how much work goes into taking care of a dog, especially active working breeds. Do your research before you make a decision and you should be fine.

At this dog park I go to regularly, I've witnessed a young Asian couple stare right at their dog as it poops and walk away, not even bothering to pick up their dog's mess. This literally happened on two separate occasions. They parked right in front of the entrance gate so I snapped a picture of their car (license plate). Am I allowed to post it on yelp?
>>
My dad said he just knocked his dog out, what do I do?
>>
>>2325375
why would you post a picture of a patron's car on yelp like a passive-aggressive coward when the park's owners (the government) can/will do nothing about it instead of saying "don't worry I have a bag" to the couple in an equally passive-aggressive way?

You're not really giving us much context here. What's going on? Is your dad abusing his dog? Can you remove the dog from the situation?
>>
>>2325465
My dad has been/is abusing his dog and has encouraged him to be aggressive, this has been going on for several years now. He taught him to misbehave and so the dog barks all the time and then he gets mad when the dog barks even though it's his fault he acts that way, he also tries to blame it on me like he always does for not doing anything about it even though I had nothing to do with the way the dog turned out. Unfortunately I can't think of anything to do, I can't remove him from the situation.
>>
>>2325472
There's not much you can do if you can't remove the dog from the situation and can't convince your dad to change the way he treats the dog... If there's any evidence of abuse, you could anonymously call animal control and they might be able to do something about it (have the dog taken away from him.) But if there isn't evidence of abuse, animal control won't be able to do anything. Sorry, anon. :(
>>
>>2325475
It's just fucking bullshit, the dog is innocent and shouldn't have to live like this.
>convince your dad to change
he won't even treat his own kids right, he's a piece of shit. By evidence I assume you mean some kind of wound but they are also living in poor conditions, tied to a rope. I might be able to call anonymously because anything else and I would be ostracized from the family which is why I haven't turned him in already but I don't think animal control will be able to take him away. He has been made so aggressive that if anyone not in the immediate family tries to get near him he tries to attack them so animal control would likely kill him as well. It's just a really fucked up situation and I hate him and I wish he would just fucking die already instead of being such a burden on all of us.
>>
>>2325486
Is your dad Mexican or Southern by any chance?
>>

>so excited about it he chews on it without abandon until he bleds all over it
>take it away
>a few minutes later he starts doing the "I'm in pain" cry, lying at my feet and moaning, restless, whimpering miserably
>I take him in the other room and give him lots of attention, check his teeth for fractures or cracks, squeeze his tummy a little to check for pain, nothing
>say some words he knows to maybe elicit a reaction
>out?
>hungry?
>water?
>treat?
>play?
>...antler?
>he does the acknowledgement head tilt
>give him the antler
>he settles down with it behind the couch and haven't heard a peep from him since

he's a little bastard but damned if I don't find it funny

>>
>>2325486
>It's just fucking bullshit, the dog is innocent and shouldn't have to live like this
I agree, it's fucked up.

And by evidence, I mean anything that can prove he's either abusing or neglecting the dog. You say he lives tied up in poor conditions? That can be enough for animal control to do something. If the dog is tied up and living in filth, and has no water/shelter available, that is grounds for them to take the dog away. I would report anonymously so your dad doesn't have the chance to "clean up" or untie the dog before animal control comes to take a look.
>>
>>2325496
OK, thanks for listening and your help. It sucks but I am afraid something bad is going to happen tomorrow. Yeah he is tied up and has no shelter, but I am telling you they will have to pole him or whatever it is they do because he is not going to let them near him. I don't have a camera or hardly a phone even, so I can't really document anything. I am worried that he will do something before I have a chance to react or he will try something and I won't know what to do. he said he would kill him with a hammer.
>>
>>2325501
I'm sorry, anon, it's a shitty situation and I can only hope it turns out for the better for the dog.

Even if the dog is aggressive, animal control taking him is still better than your dad beating him to death with a hammer. Even if animal control ends up euthanizing him, at least that's a painless death.
>>
>>2325492
It's just kind of a stereotype. I'm sure you already know this because you know your dad better than me but if you're ever hoping to convince him that animal abuse is wrong, don't even bother.
>>
>>2325515
Yeah you're right, I'm sorry for shitting up the thread with negativity, I just need help. If he tries to do something what do I do? Do I try and stop him? Like block his path or...? I hate even having to ask. This motherfucker always does this shit behind closed doors and out of sight so he never gets caught.
>>
>>2325521
Nah man I gave up trying to convince him of anything long ago, but believe me I tried.
>>
>>2325527
>Do I try and stop him? Like block his path or...?
I mean, it's up to you. You can certainly try. I probably would try to stop him if I were in your situation because I couldn't just stand by and watch him hurt the dog. But I don't know how a physical confrontation like that would turn out in your situation.

But I would try to do what you can to make sure it doesn't come to that in the first place. Call animal control in the morning and report him for neglect/animal cruelty. See if you can get them to help. It is true that an aggressive dog has the possibility of being put down if they take him in, but sometimes dogs can be rehabilitated or sent to a rescue, etc. Many times, a dog who is aggressive on a chain will be a totally normal dog when removed from that context. This dog could calm down when removed from the abusive situation he's in right now. Either way, if animal control takes him, you're at least giving him a chance, and at the very least a merciful death instead of what your dad has in store for him.

Any tips on how to get my puppy to not be an asocial goof when we take her to the park? She likes other dogs, one on one, but gets all weird when in a group and prefers to jump on all the humans nearby instead. We're working on getting her to stop jumping, of course, but any tips on helping her realize that she's a DOG and should be running around with the others?

She's <6 months, so she's not beyond help. It's just kind of frustrating when we've worked so hard on socialization and she just doesn't seem to "get" how to play with other dogs.

>less than six months old at the dog park
she's had all her shots and you've waited for them to be fully effective, right bucko?

anyway, the socialization of a dog doesn't mean you're teaching her to be friendly or even social. it means you're getting her used to different stimuli so that she doesn't freak the fuck out when confronted with an unknown. you don't need to teach her how to play with other dogs if she doesn't want to. you need to just make sure she isn't reactive or aggressive around them, which it sounds like she isn't. it doesn't even sound like she's nervous about other dogs, just that she prefers humans.

if you're concerned that she's not getting enough exercise, do laps around the park with her since she'd rather be with you. not all dogs want to play with other dogs, just like not every human is best buddies with every stranger they meet.

>>
>>2325696
The other anon who replied to you got it right. Not all dogs are super interested in playing with other dogs, and that's ok. As long as she's polite, not aggressive or fearful around other dogs, what's the harm?

My dog will politely greet a strange dog but then likes to go about her business and play with me instead. Honestly, I prefer this as it's a lot easier to get her to not be distracted by things. She really liked playing with dogs she's familiar with, but strange dogs are just not her thing.

Yep, she's fully vaccinated! She'll be 6 months next week--I'm just in denial that she's growing, man.

And you both made excellent points. I think I'm just so used to having dogs that REALLY love to play with other dogs that I'm just kinda vexed as to why my dog would rather jump on people. She is super friendly and is very civil with other dogs. I was kind of hoping she'd want to go on long walks and play dates with a bunch of dogs in the district but you're right that I shouldn't try to change her and should just embrace her personality. It's better than trying to force her to play and then her getting annoyed. Thanks guys.

Guys. I literally can't get dogs to like me. Every family dog I've had has never liked me. They don't listen to me. When I try to take our dog on a walk it sits and refuses to walk with me. It's been this way for a while, like I can't connect with any dog in our house. I'm 19 and work full time. My mom is retired and the dog is basically hers.

Now I've always wanted a dog of my own, but always feared that the dog wouldn't like me because apparently I kill puppies in a dog's eyes. That or it would be going well but then my mom and the dog would be alone in the house and slowly the dog would prefer my mom.

How the fuck do you get dogs to like you? Or should I just get a cat and submit to my love for felines? Less maintenance.

tl;dr how do you get a dog to stay loyal to you even if they see you much less than the dog lover in the house that will surely try to steal it away.

>pic related, literally the bitches face when I look at her or ask her to do something. She frowns and looks away if I persist she lays down and growls.

>>
>>2326683
>I work full time
>my mom spends all her time with the dog
>the dog prefers her
that's completely normal. I mean you're more or less a stranger to the dog.

if you want a better relationship with your dog, spend more time with it. teach it some commands, play games with it

>how do you get a dog to stay loyal to you even if they see you much less than the dog lover in the house that will surely try to steal it away
maybe go on a walk together with your mother. the dog doesnt have to stay "loyal" to either of you.
also sounds like your relationship with your mom isnt perfect

>She frowns and looks away if I persist she lays down and growls
that's dog for "leave me the fuck alone". I suggest you, you know, leave it the fuck alone when it does that.
or try to lure it with food, but ultimately you just need to spend more time with "your" dog

Slightly scares me now that Pixel (sheltie) is coming up to seven and Eira (rough collie) has just turned six. Doesn't help that as much as I love my course, being a vet student I notice every little thing. They're healthy at the moment bar the fact the rough has epilepsy, but we've got that just about under control- but I know she's essentially a ticking time bomb.

Hello everyone, I just recently rescued a dog that was left outside our house so I decided to let her in. I'm not really familiar with dog breeds but she looks exactly like one of these random dog pics I have from the internet. Anyone help me solve my curiosity? I can't take a proper pic of her since she's so agile
>>
>>2329644
the dog in that pic is a pomeranian or pomeranian mix.
>>
>>2329752
Hmm or a spitz. I know some poms have the cute fox face so it could easily be a Pom. She's cute.

Beautiful dog, anon. The head tilt is adorable.

Here's mine looking like his mom just walked in on him watching porn. Adopted him at Christmas, no idea what he is though. I'm thinking some kind of cocker spaniel mix?

I want to go dock fishing and want to bring my dogs. They virtually have no recall, as they are both rescues I got as adults and hound mixes of some kind.

How safe would it be to put them on a 15 foot tie out cable while I fished?

My doggo has suddenly started digging at the base of closed doors and/or carpet when I'm not around. He's doing it to inner doors, not the front door, so I'm assuming it's not separation anxiety, and it's not anything in the rooms themselves, since he shows no interest in entering the rooms when I'm home and the doors are open.

I'm assuming it's just boredom since I haven't grabbed him a new toy in a while and I'm at work all day - do any anons have any experiene with what else this could be? He hasn't had any issues at home before.
>>
>>2329998
>>2329999
Looks like a spaniel/retriever mix.
>>
>>2330255
Just because he's not digging at the front door doesn't mean it isn't separation anxiety.

It sounds like general neurotic/anxious behavior. Things like separation anxiety (or indeed, just anxiety in general) can develop or worsen due to boredom, so I would recommend getting him something to occupy himself when you leave. A stuffed Kong or puzzle toy, for instance--something rewarding that will hold his interest for a decently long time. And more exercise when you are home with him couldn't hurt, either.

All of this is good advice, but I would also recommend playing with him when you are at home to tire him out, and try to play with any of the toys you intend to leave him alone with to build up positive associations with them.

I would also advise going to your vet as they may be able to give some medication, advice, etc to address the anxiety.

Most vets don't have much or any training in behavioral issues. They'll give you doggy prozac, but as with SSRIs in people, they are most effective when paired with therapy. A normal vet might also not understand how to get the dosage and brand of pill right too.

You'll need to go to a vet who specializes in animal behavior for this to be fruitful.
>>
>>2330393

>A normal vet might also not understand how to get the dosage and brand of pill right too.

Whilst I agree with you that being referred to a veterinary behaviourist for behaviour modification is best combined with medication, I can assure you right now that your vet will know the dosage and correct medication.

As a vet student, none of the vets I have ever worked with have perscribed anything they don't feel 1000% happy with knowing the dose and correct medication for that ailment. If we don't know the answer, we ring somebody who does, no vet would EVER let a client leave a consultation with an incorrect dosage, that would could be downright dangerous for the patient.

What might be an idea for >>2330255 is going to the vet and triple checking there is nothing physically wrong with the pup. Behaviour problems can stem from a medical issue, so it is always worth checking. Then, if you and your vet decide your pup is 100% healthy, he might be able to give you a better management plan/refer you onto a veterinary behaviourist who can do this.

They can get a dosage by weight right, but there is a bit of an art to SSRIs.

My experience was this.
Vet
>okay I can give him fluoxetine of 20mg

Behaviorist:
>lets start with 10mg for about two weeks then move to 20mg.
>if we see good results there we can maintain at 20 until we are ready to take him off
>let me know about side effects asap. Different fluoxetine generics can have different side effects, so we can try a few if we see anything
>there are a couple of other drugs but I think this is going to be the best with your dogs set of issues and problems
>we can also discuss a quicker working sedative if we need something to work while waiting for the fluoxetine to take effect

I had a really similar experience getting SSRIs for myself. General practice doctors tend to prescribe and move on, while the specialists have a much broader understanding of the drug.

>hear dog growl
>quickly turn around
>dog is close to him but didn't physically touch, walked off after my command

I was likely in the wrong here but I've never had this incident happen before. Countless people have walked past her off leash without issue so I can only assume it had to do with this stranger approaching her or at least verbally communicating something. I wish I hadn't been in front when it happened.

Have you ever considered the possibility of adopting a shelter dog? Not necessarily a doberman but maybe a dog getting close to it's euthanasia date?
For a first time dog owner a young mixed breed could be more forgiving than a pure bred puppy, and certainly less expensive.
Either way, good luck.

That's because I completely understand why people want a pure bred, and I see nothing wrong with it.

>>
>>2333629
Different anon but totally agree. Some people can only see pet acquisition in black and white terms (ONLY adopting or ONLY purchasing from breeders) and fail to see potential merits with the other side/potential problems with their own stance.

We moved to a country that only allows citizens or permanent residents with proof of permanent residence to adopt from shelters and had no luck finding any breed specific rescues that'd adopt out to us. We had to get our pup from a breeder, though we did want to try adopting, and we couldn't be happier!

Have a small back yard that I've been renovating since I adopted a pup. Before it was app gravel but I swept that to the side, so it was mostly mud back there for a bit. Laid down some sod and the pup immediately went and laid down on it and ate the grass. He wouldn't stop eating even when we reprimanded him (and he's usually excellent about that) so I figured he had an upset stomach.

Looked around a bit and saw that eating grass could also be supplement for diet, and I wanted to start getting him some cooked vegetables. What are some good options and how much? I was thinking half a can of carrots to go with his kibble or mixed in his wet dog food.
>>
>>2333732

Oh, and he's a 120 lb great pyr
>>
>>2333732
So I'm not a vet or a behaviorist but I read an article recently that the whole "dog eating grass because their stomach hurts" notion is typically a misconception. Your dog might just really like the taste of grass haha. Carrots are super healthy for them and they do seem to love them, though! Your pup will probably be stoked to have them.
>>
>>2333732
many dogs just like the taste of grass. mine does. it's only a problem if he eats too much or if there have been pesticides applied.

if there are no other symptoms of illness (loose stools/diarrhea, mostly, but also dehydration or odd behavior), it's probably just that your dog saw some new stuff out in the backyard and realized it was tasty.

my dog likes to eat new baby grass sprouts and the water plants that grow in the local creek. as for vegetables, he likes cooked broccoli and raw snap peas. he'll eat carrots if they're in tiny bite sized pieces. he will also flip a shit over sweet potatoes. he mostly likes fruit though. has a really big sweet tooth.

as with any new food, give him little bits first. also, if you're gonna start feeding vegetables, give him raw first, not canned or cooked. they have more nutrients raw. canned should definitely be your last choice.
>>
>>2333629
It definitely can be, especially if it's a little older and wasn't a problem dog. If you get lucky and rescue one that had to be given up for reasons out of the owners control, it'll be a good dog.

Our new puppys biting is a little out of control, and my understanding is that this can get serious if we handle it wrongly.

How have you delt with similar situations?

We try to let out a high pitch "auch" when he bites too hard and walk a couple steps away and stay still to try to signal that if he does that we dont want to play with him. Its been alright with me, but he really gets fixated on my girlfriend and just wont snap out of the game unless she uses a physical barrier like closing a door between them, which I have read we should not be doing.
She has a tendency to flinch which just activates him.

And one more question: We are feeding him purely with raw meat at the moment, as recommended and provided for free by the breeder, but we need to wean him slightly over to dry food, just so that he will appreciate it for reward purposes in training. Obviously there are tons of information about this online, but if you guys have any tips I would love to hear them. As for what we are going to feed him primarily on when the provided meat supply is gone, we haven't decided yet, but these frozen meat balls are very convenient and not too pricey.

Don't do any weird noises just a firm 'no' get them to calm down a bit then get them to do something else, don't back down from them or anything the dog knows you are a cuck
>>
>>2333897
Yeah the whole fake yelping thing didn't work for us and a friend who raised a halfway decent puppy (read: thinks she's an expert) kept trying it when she visited us even though we kept telling her that we're sticking to the firm "NO."

For us, that's what worked. It's more like a gruff adult dog's annoyed bark, which usually helps puppies understand. I've heard that ignoring them and stopping play can help, too. Just keep trying and be consistent. If puppy gets to slide sometimes or with one person, they won't learn.

My dog interpreted the yelp as play, so whenever he nipped I would simply offer him a toy instead. If youre petting the dog and it nips as you take your hand away, again offer an appropriate toy. Dont continue to pet the dog, that simply encourages nipping. If youre walking and the dog is nipping at your feet, stand still. If they chase you as you start to walk, stand still again. All of this takes time and consistency. Don't expect it to get better in a few days, but over the coming weeks you will see improvement.

The high pitch is to simulate a Yelp, this only helps bite inhibition, not to stop the biting. For mine we would use a firm no, and always stop the play. They're a social animal, having playtime taken away from them generally ends up teaching them really fast what to do and what not to do.

>uses a physical barrier like closing a door between them, which I have read we should not be doing
If you need to use a physical barrier to get the dog to stop, then you should. The important part is that the pup learns that when he bites too hard, playtime stops. If he's still having fun when your gf is just standing there, then playtime hasn't stopped for the pup, so use barriers. Puppy bites -> say "no" or "ouch" (optional*) -> disengage completely -> reengage when puppy is calm and not continuing to try and bite.

Just be consistent, and make sure that others are consistent with him as well.

*helpful for some dogs, less so for others, so tailor your approach to suit your dog

any ideas on how to get a little pupper to go chill in his cage in stead of going to sleep directly under and between the wheels of my chair? I've been throwing little treats into his cage to lure him in which gets him in there, but he just comes right out after unless I sit with him until he sleeps. I try to throw more treats in to reward/encourage him to stay in there.

I've become more interested in dogs recently, mostly since yesterday when I got to meet just the sweetest dog that convinced me I need a dog in my life.
I'm doing my research, mostly focusing on greyhounds, and how to train/leash train dogs. I'm a cat owner, so I know nothing about training an animal to do things on command like waiting, eating, etc., not to mention going out on walks.
Most sources I can find online on training are Cesar Millan-tier, anyone has any good ones?

Thank you guys, wow! He'll be alright, we have made some improvements. He strikes me a very, very stubborn dog. So calm and relaxed from the first minute in his new home, doesnt care about traffic, neighbours refurbishing noise or anything, but he will squeal endlessly alternating different types of whining sounds when he doesn't get what he wants.

I guess patience is key here.
>>
>>2334380
Glad you're starting to see improvements! Patience really is key with dog training. They test their limits but it's not out of spite--they're babies and they're still learning. They crave consistency and routine and attention, of course, so when you give them all of that it helps immensely! Good luck.

11 years old aussie. He has a bit wavy hair, but after a quick shake he look like a regular aussie. Fur in tail has thinned so it looks a bit miserable, but otherwise still great pup. He has slight hearth murmurs but is on meds and we've decided to not baby him. Rather he lives full doggo life a bit shorter time than is kept inside few months longer. Few days ago he kept up with 7 years old dog, 2 one year old aussies, and his brother that our friend owns, on a two hour walk in deep snow.

Sounds like he has some separation anxiety/boredom issues. There's several things you can do to help him with that.

Get him some things like a Kong (can be filled with peanut butter, treats, chew sticks, etc.), other puzzle toys, maybe some chews like antlers or bully sticks. Give him something like this when you leave so he has something to occupy him while you're gone. Not only will it distract him, but it will help him feel better and (since he can't be howling or crying while chewing) reinforce quiet behavior.

Additionally, make sure he gets some exercise in before you leave if you're going to be gone for several hours, to tire him out. Mixing in some mental exercise (training games) with that physical exercise will really help tire him out a lot.

And if he's really bad with it (and even if he's not, it can't hurt,) do some separation anxiety training exercises with him--you leave the house, wait a couple seconds (start with low criteria if he can't stay quiet long) and come back and reward him for being quiet. Rinse and repeat, building the amount of time you're "gone." Just do this once or twice a day, plus the aforementioned stuff, and he should show improvement.

Good luck with him anon, he's a cutie!

Dog has a hot spot, likely from a small/negligible ankle injury or a splinter/spiky grass bit that he just couldn't leave alone after he licked it out

We have an appointment at the vet tomorrow because it's on the verge of infection and I can't fucking get him to leave it alone.

His snout is too long for cones to be effective. He does most of his licking when we're asleep, though he will get in one or two when he thinks I'm not looking and will immediately stop when I catch him.

Does anyone have any really effective ways to keep a dog from irritating a hotspot? It's on his back left leg and cones don't work (and I assume the inflatable one wouldn't work either--he's too limber and his snout is too long)

He enjoys the taste of bitter spray too.
>>
>>2335735

Socks. Or, if he doesn't like something over his feet then arm warmers. He'll look really daft, but hopefully it will stop him from licking his hotspot. Make sure if you have to tie them in place that you don't do it too tightly.

Just be careful he isn't soaking the sock by licking however.
>>
>>2335763

This works too. When my rough collie was spayed, she absolutely refused to move with the cone of shame on. So she wore t-shirts and a pair of boxers for a week whilst she was recovering: looked ridiculous, but it kept her from having a go at her wound.

Any advice on trying to work thru leash reactivity to other dogs? He's a sweetheart in every other situation, but he loses his cool and spazzes out if dogs approach him without a fence. He's been that way since before we adopted him from the rescue.

He's friendly and curious with other dogs thru a fence though, so I'm wondering if there is hope for him.

I do this sometimes if my dog is making noises for attention. He get confused, then starts borfing, and we make noises back and forth until I get a full bark out of him. Then we usually find a good toy for tugging and he works the energy out.

I'm watching my sister's Malamute Lab mix, (at least that's what she told me it was but I'm doubting that) how often should I let him out? I went on a mile hike with him about 2 hours ago and played some tug o war for about 20-30 minutes with him just now to tire him out.
>>
>>2336275
Try clicker training the cats. They tend to take to it pretty well.
>>
>>2336477
how old is he? he shouldn't be going on mile hikes if he's too young. I don't know why you're doubting he's a malamute mix, he looks well enough like one. long periods of strenuous exercise aren't good for growing puppies, especially large/giant breeds.

for every month old he is, that's how many hours you can wait to take him out. he looks about 5 months? that's every 5 hours at most. you also need to take him out after every play session, after every nap, after every feeding/drink.

I'm mostly doubting the lab part. She got him for free from some meth heads that sold mainly Malamute and Pits.

Is mile hikes too strenuous? I was told that since he's a bigger dog that long runs would be good for him. Truthfully it was probably only a half mile, but by the time we were heading back he was trying to run home. I'm hoping that I didn't strain him out too much.

You're right, he's 5 months. I'll keep the 5 hour thing in mind.

There's not really a sure way to tell if she's doing it or not, although your dog's behavior might be a hint. If you suspect she's lying, you could try and catch her in the act or something in order to call her out on it. Otherwise, not much you can do but remind her not to do it.
>>
>>2336497
>I was told that since he's a bigger dog that long runs would be good for him
When he's fully physically mature, going for runs will be great for him!

But for growing puppies, compelled/sustained running or really long walks (although they might enjoy them!) can harm their development and cause joint problems in the long run. Puppies' bones and joints aren't fully formed (look up "growth plates" to learn more) so it isn't good for them to do too much repetitive, sustained exercise, or high-impact activities. This is especially important for large and giant breed dogs who take longer to mature physically.

It's ok to take him on walks (not runs) right now, and a half-mile is probably ok, but if he seems to be getting too worn out by it, dial it back a bit. He does need exercise of course! You just have to be careful not to overdo it. Doing shorter walks more frequently rather than one long walk is a good way to let him get a good amount of exercise in without putting too much stress on his growing bones. And of course, play sessions (tug, fetch, etc.) are good too!

>>2336525
Don't listen to the other anons, man. It's ok to personally not like small dogs but they are just being dicks. Bean looks like a good dog! I think you should trim her claws, though.
>>
>>2336497
like everyone else said, it affects their still-developing joints and bone growth. a good rule is 5 minutes of walk for every month they're old, twice a day--it's not a one-size-fits-all, but it's a good rule of thumb for starting out.

also, regarding the lab part--eh. not sure if you're implying you think he's a pit mix, but it doesn't look like he's displaying any physical pit traits. I'd say lab before I said pit. but I'd also say shepherd before I said lab. you can't really tell for sure until they're older.

things to look for in obvious lab mixes: webbed feet, otter/paddle-shaped tail, crazy insanely food-motivated.

Our roommate's dog is aggressive towards our dog; by that, I mean that while our dog largely ignores her outside of wanting to sniff, she growls, pulls, and snaps at him.

How do I convince my roommate that smacking her will only make it worse? She seems to think that dogs magically understand what you want from them without being shown and taught.

Depending on your country, you want to find the main kennel club (ckc, akc, ukc)
Each club website will have a breeders tab.
That'll bring up a list of breeders, or navigate you somewhere similar depending on the website
From there each breeder will have contact information and usually half of them will have a website.
If you want to get seriously serious, look up dog shows, and from there watch and listen carefully to who wins, who gets best of breed and so on. You'll probably have to educate yourself on ribbons though.

Sorry for the late reply, it's been a busy week! Yes, you are supposed to keep hotspots dry, but if she's licking it then anything to cover it is better than her constantly having a go at it.

Plus, if you go for a looser sock then that's still quite a bit of circulation around the leg. If it'll help it begin to heal then that's a start.
>>
>>2337820
NP. The vet actually told us the same thing, that keeping it covered a little would be better than him licking it into oblivion during the night.

I've tried everything these past two days though. I made a knee sock into a full-length leg cover with a sling to hook it around his ass, but he wiggled out. I put on a regular sock, he wriggled out. I cut slits on it ends of a sock so I could tie them in knots on his ankle and knee tighter so he couldn't wriggle out, but he ripped it apart with his teeth in the night after wearing it all day. I went to petsmart this morning to get a cone even though his snout is a little too long to be effective, but they only had cat-sized ones. We're going to a different store today. I figure if I put a cone and a sock and a bandage on, three layers might be enough to deter him.

We got simplicef for an antibiotic, carprofen for an anti-inflammatory, and an ointment for both, but they're not going to do much good if he won't FUCK OFF

I've been looking around online and it just doesn't seem like there's anything out there to keep a determined dog like mine off a wound except t-shirts (useless for a leg), cones (useless for a long snout), inflatable collars (useless for a really determined dog), or socks/wraps (undesirable for a wound that needs air circulation). it seems greyhound owners often have the same problem as mine and they use muzzles with stool cups. if the cone + sock + bandage doesn't work, I guess it'll be muzzle time.

I just adopted this border collie pomeranian mix! His name is Hotch!
>>
Hi /an/, has anyone had problems with excitement pees with young (mine is 4 months or so) dogs?

She is very good with her potty training but during our walks when strangers tend to pet her she usually rolls around in excitement and pees

What do you guys think of Siberian Huskies? Are they good pets? I've kinda been wanting one but I hear they're very active and kind of have their own personality.

I've always had good experiences with them in terms of human-dog interactions, but many seem to be huge assholes to other animals.
>>
>>2338371
They're good dogs but unfortunately 95% of Husky owners are irredeemable little shitmuffins. If you have to ask you'd probably be one of them too.
>>
>>2338371
They're loud, have high prey drives, are really intelligent, and are really sassy.

So they'll bother the shit out of your neighbors and you, they'll run off after any critter in your yard or on a walk, they'll get bored and tear apart your couch if left alone, and on top of it all they won't even feel sorry about it.

They're very intense dogs that need a lot of mental stimulation and exercise and even after that they'll still be stubborn and loud. If you think you can handle it, still adopt a senior husky. They're more mellowed out and will help get you in the husky owner mindset, plus you'll be giving a needier dog a home. Huskies are pretty popular dogs and younger ones get snatched up easily.

>tfw my rescue is the best behaved dog in the world
>came from a abusive owner and he was dangerously underweight with low energy
>house trained him in a week no more accidents after that
>he is in a healthy weight now
>no leash pulling, one time he got out and he went to our house door, expecting to get the door open to go back inside
>when we go for walks he only runs when I run
>In house he is lazy as fuck

A few issues I have with him is that he barely barks literally once a week I don't know if this is good to be honest and he is not that interested in playing with his toys. If someone has any recommendations with that and training I'll be very thankful
He is my first dog and I really love him
This was him after like 2 weeks of getting him
>>
>>2338309
woah! cute! how is he energy wise? I love border collies but their energy level makes me feel like I wouldn't be a good owner for one.

how much does he weigh roughly/how much exercise do you give him on a daily basis?
>>2338402

so cute! do you happen to know what breed/mix he is? and his weight? I'm looking to get a dog in the near future so I apologize for the intrusive questions
>>
>>2338484
I wish I could tell you but I have no idea, the vet say he probably has Terrier blood in him and looking at pics of Terriers, the smooth ones, I can see some kind of similarities
To be honest I would like if some anon could shed some light on the matter
As of weight he is medium sized I would say he in now in the 18 pounds range which is roughly 8 kg I think
>>
>>2337771
Three weeks isn't that long. Some dogs take longer to adjust than others. I think he'll be ok.

Just give him a little more time to get used to your new place. In the meantime, just try and establish a routine as best you can--routine/structure helps dogs feel comfortable because they know what to expect. A little extra exercise and maybe some yummy chews to help him get some of that nervous energy out would probably help as well.

>>2338331
One of my dogs used to do this when he was younger. They usually grow out of it. What it is is a matter of them being overstimulated (be that out of fear, excitement, all sorts of things can cause it,) so they just get kinda overwhelmed.

As I said most dogs grow out of it as they mature, but sometimes they need a little help. Just work on basic socialization, but try to keep the "intensity" of encounters low so he can experience things at his pace--this way he can slowly be desensitized to exciting/overwhelming stimuli, and you can build more intensity over time as he's able to handle more.

For example of what I mean by intensity: When someone meets a dog, they might walk right up, be squealing and saying hi, babytalking in an excited tone of voice, lots of petting, touching, smiles, etc. This can be a very intense experience for a sensitive dog or puppy! Even if it's a "good" intense, it can still be overwhelming. Instead, dial it back a bit--when your pup is meeting a new person, have the person behave in a calm manner. Instead of approaching your dog head-on, they should curve around a bit (or better yet, be seated or stationary somewhere and let the dog approach them.) No excited baby-talk, if the person talks it should be in a gentle, calm voice. Don't go overboard with petting--if pup seems receptive to it the person can pet him, but they shouldn't loom over the dog or be trying to hug/kiss him, and should pet with one hand only, just gently. I think you get what I'm saying here. Good luck!
>>
>>2338402
Some dogs are just not very vocal, I wouldn't worry about the barely barking thing.

Re:toys, not all dogs are super interested in toys. Since he came from an abusive situation, he may just not be used to the concept of toys/playing with stuff as it might just never have been something he was exposed to. So he might just not really know what to do with them.

But, even with dogs who have lived totally normal lives, there are some who just don't care for toys very much. Doesn't necessarily mean there's anything wrong with him. You can, however, try to build his toy drive if you'd like him to be more playful! This can take some time and patience, and he may never be one of those dogs who's obsessed with their ball or frisbee, but he can learn that it's fun to play with toys (especially with you!)

If you want to build interest in toys, you want to just get super happy and excited with him any time he shows any amount of interest in one of his toys. Go crazy with happy praise and attention. Try and see if adding movement to the toy (throwing it/waving it around) increases his interest. If it does, even better! Go crazy with that happy praise and attention again. Is he food motivated? You can reward him for engaging with his toys by giving him treats as well, so he will build a positive association with the toys. Don't get discouraged if he doesn't pick up on all this super fast. It can take time to build that interest, but if you are patient, I'm sure he'll get the hang of it!

He's really cute by the way, anon. I'm glad you adopted him
>>
>>2338499
Thanks anon, when I throw a toy he runs for it but I don't think he knows what else to do after that but I think I should work with that attitude and build his toy drive from there
What I want is for him to be comfortable and know that playing is fine

And I'm glad a adopted him, I want to get him a friend but I'll wait until I get a bigger house.
Thanks again for the advice anon

This is my meme doggo from a craigslist rehoming ad. She had three owners in her first year of life. She is likely a mix but she's my perfect mix. She gives great snuggles.
She is somewhat stubborn in training, she won't do anything unless you have a real high value treat and even then she may only do it once or twice before she leaves you. But she's getting better every time. She wouldn't play with toys either when we first got her. Now she can't get enough of them.

How do you deal with a puppy that is afraid to go outside?

He is 9 weeks old and never had a traumatic experience of any kind. I bring him out, he goes to pee, then if Im lucky he will follow me to the edge of the back yard before sitting down whining his guts out. If there are two of us I can walk far ahead and he will eventually come along before sitting down for another 5-10 minutes. This way we have been around the block many times, been to the park a couple times where he had a great time, we have taken the bus a couple times without issues, we have introduced him to three friendly dogs and let him boop strange dogs outside, which he seems to love, and we go on long walks every evening.
All this exposure has done absolutely nothing to help with his fear. He is only getting worse.

Its actually infuriating, to be honest, that he is such an irrationally scared little shit outside and then when he gets home he just goes nuts inside the apartment.

Are Greyhounds good apartment dogs like they claim? (Apartment meaning in this case one room in a student flat). Also do they make good first time dogs?
>>
>>2339432
>are they good apartment dogs?
>one room in a student flat
I'd say yes, but that sounds ridiculously small for any dog breed

>do they make good first time dogs?
They're very calm, quiet and sweet. As long as you're willing to buy it what it needs (various kinds of toys, coats, etc) you'll be fine, though that can be said about any dog breed. They can get bored quickly during training though, so make sure to keep it interesting

Does anyone know what breed the middle dog may be?

The yellow lab/pit bull and the black lab/rottweiler were both my dogs.

The one in the middle belonged to a friend of my parents that were moving and we were dogsitting him, this was sometime ago and I just stumbled upon the picture and i'm curious now.

He was a really nice dog, very friendly and got along well with my pups
>>
>>2339522
>but that sounds ridiculously small for any dog breed
I was initially considering a cat but my flatmate is allergic.

Do Greyhounds need a lot of exercise? There are 2 dog parks nearby where he/she could run freely. Most days it would only be jogging on a lead though.

>>
>>2339907
They need around the same amount of exercise other dog breeds do, going out for walks twice a day and playing some tug of war with you. You shouldn't get your greyhound off leash too soon though, if they start running they get so focused on it they can easily run far away and get lost

Anyone deal with a dog who can't stand nail trims? My father has a 6 year old dachshund who was diagnosed with IVDD last year, total back failure, then paralysis, then full recovery. He used to go to the groomer every other month, but we think in conjunction with his back flare-ups he grew more and more unmanageable. We now have been refused service at 4 different groomers. He has bit me twice for touching his paws without clippers (bites, gets away and hides). Yet everything I see says you know-- treats and conditioning. Is it possible (especially with his health conditions) that he just may not ever put up with nail trims? Or do I just keep trying to give him treats in exchange for paw touches? (funny enough, he 'shake' and 'high five's very well. but if you touch back or hold he panics)

Everyone says you shouldn't wake a sleeping puppy. Well, our puppy will sleep almost all day if we let him. What do I do?
Dont get me wrong, I love that I can ignore him and he will just sleep forever and Im not anxious to play with him or anything like that, I think he is an annoying little cunt when he is awake. The thing is that as the hours go by I start to feel bad when feeding times get pushed back and Im afraid Im not giving him enough affection or showing him a good time outside.

Still, you never wake a sleeping puppy, right?
>>
>>2340062
I should be more precise, I guess, so here is how today has been:
>He slept all night, from around 23.00
>at 07.00 my GF fed him and took him out to pee and walk around a little before work
>I move to the couch at 08.00 and we had a nap until 11.00.
>I got up and he kept sleeping. Its 15.14 now and he is still sleeping
>>
>>2340064
>>2340062
very young puppies sleep 18-19 hours a day. if he's sleeping more than that, I'd go to the vet and ask.

adult dogs will still usually sleep 12-14 hours per day.
>>
>>2340062
>never wake a sleeping puppy
I've never heard this. Why?
>>
>>2340747
Because they need a lot of sleep, I guess?

Dogs can get easily irritated or frightened if awaken, waking a puppy up would make it prone to biting you or growling at you
>>
>>2340947
>Dogs can get easily irritated or frightened if awaken
Yeah, but they specified puppies specifically so I wondered if they were implying some sort of medical reason.

Also it is important to be careful not to startle a sleeping dog, for sure, but "never do it" when talking about your own dog is...I dunno, I feel like you should also train them to feel comfortable with you waking them up in some way. Every dog is different I suppose, but my dog is totally chill with me walking up to pet her while she's asleep.
>>
>>2341368
>specified specifically
Ugh I feel like an idiot for actually typing this
>>
>>2341368
Nah, I'm 99% sure there's no medical explanation for this. And if your dog is already ok with it then I doubt it's gonna become a problem
