My fuckhead roommate left the backdoor and gate open while I was out taking care of some errands and my cat got out. He's usually afraid of going outside so he's probably freaking out right now. A neighbor said he saw him walking across his lawn earlier, so I know he's still in the neighborhood somewhere.
How does one go about looking for a lost cat/luring him back?

Put something that smells like your cat outside. Dirty litter is the best, but if your cat has a blanket or something he often cuddles with that could work too.

This and/or something that smells strongly of their favorite person like bedsheets that have been slept in.
Don't leave food out because that can attract other animals that might scare your cat off

Make sure you talk to your neighbours to let them know to keep an eye out for him. And call/visit your local shelters in case he was picked up by someone who thought he was a stray

I finally found him in the neighborhood and brought him home
He was rather difficult to lure back and a neighbor almost called the cops on me, but he finally accepted the food I had and I picked him up and took him home
He was pretty hungry, but now that he's calmed down hes very affectionate
