>>
Guys I've been thinking about getting my first rat, but I'm worried about keeping him in commieblock. Does they stink? Will they bite me? Can I pet them? Do I have to wash them? How expensive are they?
>>
>>2317668
>do they stink?
Yes and no, as long as you keep the cage clean they don't smell.
>will they bite?
I've never been bitten by a rat on purpose, they've only bitten me because they were so excited for snacks that they missed the snack. They can bite but usually don't.
>can I pet them?
Yes
>do I have to wash them?
On occasion but if you do it right you can put them in a little container filed with a little bit of water and kitten shampoo and they'll bathe themselves.
>how expensive are they?
The initial cost for a cage, bedding, water bottle, toys, chews and hides is pretty expensive. But otherwise they're really cheap pets and rat's themselves are are 5-30$.
>>
>>2317668
You don't want to get a rat. You want to get rats. They are too social to keep just one humanely, they need the company of other rats and no amount of care by a human can replace that.
>>
>>2317759
2 are enough? Will two males be bros?
>>
>>2317770
Yes. Most of the time. Make sure you get a big enough cage and feed them the right shit.
I would get 3. I feel like it gives them more of an option on who to hang out with and when one dies, you won't be left with a lonely straggler.
>>
>>2317770
2 are definitely enough. Rats of any sex will get along, you just want same sex pairs so they don't create 20 new rats every month.

Get rats that are already bonded (or at least young) because gettng rats used to each other takes a long ass time, a lot of effort and an extra cage.
>>
>>2317788
If you're going to get into the cycle of buying new rats so you don't end up with lonely sole survivors, I think you might as well spread the ages out a little. Get one pair, then a year later get a younger pair.

>>2317668
By the way, they don't live very long. 2 years on average, they push 3 if you're reasonably lucky. It's the only real potential deal breaker imo. I firmly believe rats would be much more popular pets if they lived longer.

When i was in middle school I could buy a small (ie just old enough to live on solid food alone) for $0.50 from my local pet store. Eventually they increased to $1.50.

Adults were more expressive but took longer to get them acquainted and they didn't live as long since they were older.

I miss having rats.

I really want to get pet rats but I'd only be able to keep the cage in my room and I'm worried they'll make too much noise when I'm sleeping.
>>
>>2323206
I've only had my rat cages in my room and it never bothered my sleep, except the resident escape artists who would break out of their cages somehow to breed.
>>
>>2323206
eh, depends on the rat, males are more lazy than the females but it could depend on the rat itself.
>>
>>2323243

This is Reroll (named in /b/)
Chinese hamster, not really a good pet, they are just too hyperactive.

The pro is that these fuckers are very resilient and easy to take care of.

The reason he is in a glass aquarium is for his safety. In normal cages he gets his head trapped between the bars.

Spoiler : THEY MAKE SO FUCKING MUCH NOISE.

Whenever I let him free arround the house, he gets lost between the couches and stuff for a few minutes, then he follows me everywhere
>>
>>2323306
Chinese hamsters are the friendliest of the bunch. He'll start cuddling your fingers in a couple months. It's not normal for them to make tons of noise though.
>>2323206
As long as you play with them and feed them before bed they'll be really quiet all night. Otherwise you'll get lots of them running and jumping around the cage

This might seem stupid (and it probably is) but can you let your rat out of it's cage? wont it just fuck off in a couch somewhere and try to hide from you, or are they intelligent enough to get attached to their owners? I've never owned a rat or knew anyone who did so I know next to nothing about them.

You got to be careful when letting your pets interact with Dinos.
>>
>>2325691
Keep their cage clean, give them a bath once in awhile, and don't let them live in the sewer.

Rats like to be clean, but when they live in a disease riddled environment they tend to catch a thing or two
>>
>>2325691
Cleaning is pretty easy, sounds like a lot because you should clean that cage 3-4 times a week, but it's quick and easy. To clean my two cages takes only 30 minutes.

Unless you buy from a bad breeder, pet rats don't usually carry transferable diseases. They're prone to upper respiratory infections though, but that's not dangerous to humans or transferable. The only one you'll have to watch for is rat bite fever, which is rare.

I just bought some rats, month old and have had them for about a week, they're still warming up to me.

Quick question instead of making my own thread, I don't have a suitable cage yet and I have this pressboard wardrobe I was thinking of converting, it's 20" depth, 30 width and 48" high, Should I be worried that only having cage doors in the front will be too enclosing for them, I think I'm over thinking it though.
Also, how long do I have before they start to chew holes in it?

pic sorta related, I think bookcases don't have enough depth, kinda bothers me seeing all the google DIY's.

>>
>>2317915
No they aren't the same. 'fancy rats' as they're called, are significantly different from wild rats. Less aggressive and destructive, they're pretty much like dogs. If you buy from a serious breeder, they will have a pedigree and come form a long line of good, healthy and friendly rats. Also the smartest and most affectionate pocket pet.

Idiots put the rat in the cage with the snake. Snake wasn't hungry and ignored the rat, rat eventually fell asleep on the snake. So, I was thinking about getting a pair of rats pretty soon, like within the month.

I've been looking into it, and I was thinking about getting males because from what I've read they more chill. But, I'm concerned with them fighting? Some places say males can't be put together at all, and others say that they're fine together.

Obviously I'm not just gonna throw two rats together, but I was wondering if I could get some insight because I don't wanna fuck shit up, and I've never owned a rat before.
>>
>>2333308
3 males and 6 females. But I also keep my cages in a well ventilated area.
>>
>>2333429
They can be put together most of the time, the easiest way is to buy a pair from the same litter as they won't likely fight. And won't likely have to do introductions.

If you have to get two males from seperate cages or litters you'll have to do introductions. They usually get along pretty really, but introductions take time. About 2 weeks.

I personally prefer females as they're more energetic and fun, but males are cuddly, friendlier and are easier to teach tricks.
>>
>>2333429
It's unlikely for males to have serious fights. I read a figure of about 5% somewhere.

And here's my now passed boy Chunk, he was a chubby rex with tiny rounded ears and looked like a teddy bear and would lick every thumb in existence. He also enjoyed cuddling his brother bear here. I've brought my first pair of boys up to my bed to sleep with me when it got too hot and I couldn't afford a fan but my room had AC. I would wake up in the morning with them asleep on top of or snuggled into me, I used to get so worried I'd smush them. I miss them so much.

His eye was always like that? That'd be pretty cool.

Yep, his eye has always been that way. Apparently the "odd eye" trait is recessive and shows the most in rats who have a "blazed" coat which is this guy. The left eye is sorta ruby too but that right is red as the devil in the light. I just took this picture of him after he said his good mornings with his stink butt cage mate. Please consider adopting one of the THOUSANDS of homeless rats in shelters instead of buying one.

There are so, so, so many fancy rats that are languishing alone (or getting put down) because they were surrendered to the shelter or were found and turned in because either they were abandoned in a cage or someone noticed they were not a wild rat.

I recommend a Critter Nation cage, in my experience it's worth the 100-200 you spend on it. You can also take the middle staircase and fold it upward to turn it into two seperate enclosures if you buy the double. I think it's a reputable brand. My boys enjoy the space.

Also to the other anon above talking about shelters that have rats, where do you live currently? I live in NYC and they recently made the buying and selling of live rats illegal, last January to be exact. I was working at a pet store during that year and we were all given a paper explaining that rats were no longer being carried by the company. It was basically along the lines of rats not being a "profitable stock" and a safety concern, probably because of that kid who got bitten by a Petco rat and ended up with rat bite fever. I'll have to look through my phone but when I dig it up I will drop it here.

I also used to use The Rat Fanclub's Facebook page for a while and posted a photo of the paper and got comments saying that their Petcos and Pet Smarts/AKA any chain store doesn't sell them anymore either. Only live mice. I would like to know what shelters they took all of those hundreds of albino rats that got dumped in the middle of Hudson River Park to. One of the customers that shops where I used to work told me she volunteered to help with the abandoned rats and said there were so many she was "picking them up by the handful", she never said where they were going. After my two boys now go I'll have to figure out how I'll get more rats in the future.

A pair.
>>
>>2334887
3+ is always the best IMO. A pair can end up leaving a lonely rat if one dies and they're happier in bigger numbers anyway. Having 3 rats isn't any more difficult or expensive than having 2.
Try to get an already bonded trio so you don't have to worry about trying to do intros -- it's pretty easy to find already bonded rats on craigslist or in shelters. Or you could get 3 young rats. If you want males, you could also introduce adults and young rats. I've had VERY bad luck introducing babies to adult females, but adult males are almost always good with babies and you shouldn't have to do anything special. Whatever you do though, just don't fuck with trying to introduce two adult rats. It can be horrendously difficult and very scary for new owners who don't know the difference between "they're killing each other" and "they're just bickering"

>just don't fuck with trying to introduce two adult rats

It's a process sure, but not an especially difficult one unless you get unlucky and get a problem rat. I've introduced many, many adult male rats together and only had 2 that ever gave me issues. Even then I got in with the rest of my mischief, eventually. Besides, every new owner has to learn some time. It's not that hard.

You're probably freaking out over the older female rats moming the younger ones. Bigger female rats will generally act like a mother rat to younger or significantly smaller ones and sometimes carry them around the cage. One of our rats does this, the young females cry but nothing bad has happened, no blood or injuries.

I also used concrete mixing tubs. Theres a size at Home Depot that fits the critter nation cages perfectly. I usually used carefresh bedding.

My roommate has a dog that barks quite loud, usually when someones at the door, would rats still be able to live here or is that too stressful for them?
>>

Depends on the rats. My rats don't care about loud noises and are fine with my dog. Although my dog doesn't bark much.
As long as your roommates dog doesn't bark directly at them they should be fine.

How do rats react to ferrets? My rats get super cautious around me after I handle a cat. Wondering how they'd react to ferret scent.

Just got two rats about two weeks ago. Found them for free online, and since I've had rats before and my last two girls passed away last year I decided I'd take them since they didn't end up snake food. The girl told me they came with their cage, which ended up being a 10x4 plastic tub with a water bottle duct taped to the side. I'm pretty sure that the girl smacked one of them around or something, because while one is fine with my fiance the other one is terrified of her but okay with me. Here's one of them, she was the lookout that day.

Adopted two rats just a few days ago. Should I say "fuck it" to bedding and just line the cage bottom and platforms with fleece? I don't think they even like the paper bedding. They push it away when they lay down in it.

Plus it would be easier to just wash the fleece, right?

I recently acquired a youg female rat in a pet shop, the seller said she was 5 weeks old, but she seems constantly scared...
She bit my mother when she tried to pick her up and today she bit be when I tried to stroke her and I bled a little...
She is afraid of the floor and doesn't leave her cage even though she got out of it once...
She also stays in a corner most of the time.
I don't know what to do with her since I'm getting scared of being bitten and I don't want my ratto to keep acting weird her whole life...

Is she alone? Rats in pairs or more bond easier with human, as they encourage each other. When you try to pick her up, always reach from her underside, not above. Be patient, talk to her so she gets used to your voice. Offer yoghurt from spoon. Do not feed her from through the bars.
>>

>>2340295
"An only rat is a lonely rat."
Seems females suffer the most from this. They really do need to be around their own kind. I assume you have a decent sized habitat (cage)?

Plus you don't know what kind of shenanigans your rat may have gone through from the feeder-breeder and the store. It may take some time to win her over but try giving her treats once in a while.

This is how a friend won over a particularly timid rat that others had but complained of being bitten etc. She became the 3rd parent for this particular rat. Speak softly in a friendly manner all the time you are around the cage and interacting with your rat. Try putting a small dab of peanut butter on a spoon & leave it in her cage. Do it once a day at the same approximate time because they will clue in on this. If you see her responding positively over time doing this, (will anticipate it) then the next step is to get her used to your touch.

Put a small dab of pb on your finger tip and hold it steady to her so she can approach and start licking it off. Friend did this for weeks before her rat would trust her enough to step up into her open palm. Unlike her other rats this one she never could just pick up or handle, she had to invite her rat onto her palm, from that point she could carry, tickle, and play with it.

Oh, and it turns out her timid rat absolutely LOVES unsalted cashews! It took time trying various treats to discover this. I still remember her showing me this, in the kitchen she would crinkle a plastic bag with regular peanuts and her timid rat wouldn't react. But when she popped the plastic lid off the can with the cashews.. instant response! heheh.. her rat would climb up to the top level of her cage waiting to receive. :)

Hope this might work for you. Check youtube, there are some other alternative ideas that may work better for you.

Awesome

I ask as someone who admires rats but doesn't know much about them:

Are you saying rats have the ability to remember their care taker in some way, in such a way as to be able to distinguish them from an unknown person?

If so, is that by smell, voice, appearance?

For example, a person picks up a rat and holds in for a minute, and puts him back in his habitat.

Then someone else does the same. Does the rat know that he is familiar with one and not the other, or associate familiarity or distinguish between familiar people?

They can definitely tell the difference. It's probably smell primarily.
>>
>>2345451
They definitely know who you are... but they also remember other people too... for example my rats are real shy if they hear an unfamiliar voice or see someone they do t know, they walk really slow and crawl on the ground if theres someone near to them they dont recognise.. also my rats will only sleep on me, but theyll try play with my girlfriend still and arent afraid of her and a few other friends of mine who come over alot.. but they definitely favour me by far
>>
>>2345451
>>2343870 here, sorry for the delay I can only check in here periodically.

I recall her saying that some rats have impeccable memories and can remember you even if it's been months since they/it last saw you. She adopted a youngster from a girlfriend who treated it well & had it for a couple of months but had to give it up (can't remember if it was male or female) for some reason. Months later she came by to see it and the rat came right to her when normally it was cautious around others.

I think they remember you mostly by visual & aural (sound) indications, and perhaps smell... especially if it's been positive. I'm not sure if they will remember after only 1 minute of holding as in your example... it might require more exposure unless it was something negative. If one hurt them i'm sure it will remember. But as soon as any bonding is established it's there for life.

And just a bit of background: I too admire rats but have never owned one (yet). I used to see a woman who had them (mostly rescues) so most of what I know came from her and her experiences.
>>
>>2343870
I've read they can choke on peanut butter. It's a good method, though. Use baby food or yogurt instead.

Alternatively, I wonder if it becomes safer by smearing it very thin, so that the animal is mostly just getting the taste, like by smearing extra thin on something they have to nibble a bit before swallowing as opposed to taking big hearty chomps and guzzling it.

Also thanks to all sharing pics.

In theory that would obviously make sense and would make it harder for them to choke on, but since rats do not have a gag reflex its best to stay away from peanut butter or any other sticky foods that could clog their throats, because if by some chance they do start choking there's nothing their bodies can do about it...

Maybe use yogurt/yogurt treats or baby food like this anon said

Indeed.

>>2345817

So I assume plain honey roasted peanuts are ok. I haven't heard any proscriptions on nuts themselves. That way the rat would get the peanut flavor and sweetness. I assume its the paste that they may struggle with, since it is also sticky.

I wonder if cracker is safe, since cracker would turn to paste being masticated.

I just finished some pea soup and noticed the pastiness of legumes generally. Maybe they are safe and it is the aggravated stickiness of peanut butter from sugar that makes it an especial hazard.

I also wonder if there is a specific profile of yogurt, a type, that is preferred, since not all yogurts are the same, and it is a cultured product, after all.
>>
>>2345859
Full fat, low sugar for low lactose.
>>
>>2345859
Crackers might not be safe since bread is also a choking hazard.

Also give nuts sparingly because they are high in fat. I wouldn't give honey roasted nuts because there's just no need for the extra calories. Rats go bonkers enough for healthy foods, trust me. You'll never see another animal get so excited over fresh greens.

Not my ratto.
I'm hoping to get myself some lil pals of my own when I get out of student housing.
Questions tho, do you ever leave your rat's cage open for a long amount of time like overnight? And how are their sleeping patterns, do they sleep for a long time or are they active in the night?
I'm looking at studio apartments and I don't know how I'll do with my roommates having a party at 4am.

Is it normal for old rats to be balding? My oldest rat had fur thinning for some time (Could see pink in the light) and now her side is completely bald. She's about 3 years old and is developing a mammary tumour (vet talked me out of surgery for my previous rat, I decided to not try on this one since it's just torturing her for little gain), so she's not long in this world either way, but is there anything I need to do about her fur?
>>
Google "fancy rat sleeping habits"

Lady friend let hers free roam for an hour or 90 mins a day in a barricaded room usually around the same time of the day each time. They seem to know and look forward to it.

Noisy at night with their rustling around and occasional rat politics. They stay in the 2nd room because of this. Not sure how much sleeping they do but she said it's about the same as a cat.
>>
>>2349483
I usually only let my rats play when I'm awake so I can make sure they don't chew cords or get into the shit they shouldn't. Usually for at least an hour, sometimes more. Their sleeping pattern adjusts to yours for the most part, they're still nocturnal but not as bad as hamsters.

This. Those little peckers are noisy at night. Roomy had some once & I was going to "accidentally" let them escape outside but fortunately the poltergeist killed them off one night. Other than hearing the occasional door slam, footsteps, sliding chairs, & disembodied voices I finally got a decent nights sleep after that.

This is 2 days late but... i packed all my cables together and zip tied them to the bottom of my table to keep em off the floor.. rats will chew threw cables and anything else they find if left unattended.. i dont have anything they can chew on on the foor in my room, except my bed posts, table and rat cage stand (all of which are wooden)

I leave my cage open every other night if i didnt give them enough play time during the day

Sometimes one of them will come bug me and wake me up or start pulling on my hair, but everytime without fail since i got them, by the time i get up for work in the morning theyre all back in their little house in the cage, they know thats their home and they like it

Owned many rats before, currently have 3 old gals
>>
>>2350552
Yes, but only slightly. Male rat urine is a bit stronger and some (not all) like to spot mark territory. A regular cleaning regimen helps. They smell less than mice. I've heard that putting a few drops of vanilla extract in their water helps but i'm really not sure about that.
>>

Leaving them to free-roam alone for long will likely lead to chewed up furniture and panels, unless you do it in a rat-secure room - like the bathroom maybe, They are naturally nocturnal, but will slowly change their sleeping rhythm according to yours Mine often fight and sort out the pecking order at night, I've just gotten used to it.

>>2347833
cremating is nice if you can afford it
>>
>>2352456

Hideous, yes, but they are a lot of fun. I was gifted some rats after a friend was done using them for a research project.

They were easily the smartest, quirkiest, most interactive pets I have ever had.

The downside is that in spite of being very clean, they smell bad (a natural musky odor similar to ferrets) and they have very short life spans.

No question rats recognize and remember you, they're as smart as dogs in that regard. Some rats don't give much of a shit who picks them up, but others only respond to their owner and try to jump away from other people so they can sit with the person they know instead.

They recognize you mostly by smell, then voice.
>>
>>2354233

I don't actually find them all that bad looking. I'd still keep rats if I could. Unfortunately, I developed a horrid allergy to them. Broke out in hives over my whole body whenever I handled them. I took medication for it until my last rat died, but I didn't get any more after that.

They do blink, but very rarely. This goes for most rodents, since they're prey animals. I used to think my Guinea pig never slept during the day, until I realized he was sleeping with his eyes opened.

Rat people, tell me about rats.
Is it true that you need at leat two or to give them hours of attention or they get depressed?
Is it true that they live less than 2 years and usually die painfully?
Do they stink like hamsters?
>>
>>2354370
>Is it true that you need at leat two or to give them hours of attention or they get depressed?
You need at least two because rats are incredibly social creatures who live in big family groups in the wild. A human companion can never replace another member of their species who is there for them 24/7. But caring for two is no harder than caring for one, and they're a lot more fun to watch when you can see them play and sleep with each other.
>Is it true that they live less than 2 years and usually die painfully?
2-3 years is the norm. All of the rats I've had who died of old age didn't seem like they died more painfully than old people do, they either died in their sleep or while I held them. Their last hours weren't super pleasant, but it wasn't horrible either. Female rats have a´high risk of developing mammary tumors and rats from shitty pet stores and breeders often have genetic problems.and die from heart failure/lung problems/tumors.
> Do they stink like hamsters?
Males have a natural musky smell, but the cage won't stink if you clean it 1-2 times a week.
>>
>>2347833
I bury or burn them. But I have one in the freezer I can't make myself part with. Like some freaky cat lady person.
>>
>>2354276
Cool, thanks. It occured to me a while back when reading this thread that I have never seen a fancy rat blink.. except when they're sleeping and grooming themselves. I posed that question to 2 friends who've had fancy rats in the past and they just gave me a blank stares. One even said she's never noticed that before and thought THAT was weird. lol.

Btw, I was told fancy rats make great insect exterminators. Or at least one did. Knew a guy who sailed & contracted a cockroach problem while in the Carribean years ago. A constant never ending battle with sprays and bug bombs.

He rescued a pet rat from a junky commercial fisherman who was abusing it and threatening to throw it overboard. He took it in and in short order it took to exploring his boat. One day he noticed it eating a cockroach.. after that he said it seemed to scour his boat looking for more, which it did. He figures it took maybe 2 weeks at most for Morris (the name he gave his rat) to hunt down every last roach. He theorizes roaches emit a scent rats can pick up on.
>>
>>2355149
Rats have excellent sense of smell. The Gambian pouch rat is used to smell out mines and illnesses in people, so he probably did smell the roaches.

Been preparing to get my first rats. Managed to snag one of petsmart's critternation knock offs for real cheap because of a month long 25% off sale they had during March, and two overlapping 25% off flash sales, so that's pretty rad. Contacted a local breeder who wins a shitton of AFRMA awards every year to get two or three boys because fuck petshop feeder bins, and I want to have more experience with the animal before I go off to a shelter and pick up more questionable rats from there.

Hopefully they'll be cool.
>>
>>2360773
More ratty blankets, and the occasional covering in coconut oil to keep the skin. You also need to keep your house warmer, about 72f.
>>
>>2360773
Not that much more but they do require slightly different care.

They're also way snugglier IMO.
>>
>>2360801
Petsmart doesn't sell feeder rats. They deny sale if they hear it will be used as a feeder. Also price rats expensive to deter sales for feeders.

I work there. Rat sales are almost always a little kid getting a first pet. Only had one time where I had to deny a sale. They were steaming with anger. Not nice people.
>>
>>2363071
Well that's good, at least.

Most large petstores don't give a shit, or buy rats as "feeder or pet" and the rats suffer as a result.
>>
>>2363124
They don't handle the rats though and they're little spastic shits for the first couple weeks. I'm betting they still get sold as feeders as they're only 15 dollars.
