Most "hiking dogs" aren't leashed. It's not necessary, especially with dogs that are very regularly hiking and trail walking.

I tried to go hiking with my dog once. He didn't last half an hour and just laid down and refused to go on. He's a lazy lapdog.

if your dog is lazy, then because you taught it to be so.
even small dogs should be able to go on hikes, altho you might have to up the intensity over time (dont just start out of the blue with a 6 hour hike, duh!)

This is a pretty ignorant assumption, honestly. Dogs have all different energy levels, and besides that, you have no idea how old their dog is. Obviously, if they have a 7 year old english bulldog it'd be pretty shocking that it even made it a half hour. Hiking can be pretty intensive, and a dog that isn't used to climbing can get tired pretty fast even when they're used to other types of exercise.

He's pretty old too, not just lazy, but he's never been an energetic dog. I always tried to get him to go with me on long walks, but he just stops after every three seconds, looking at me like he wants to go home. Even short walks he usually just stands there.
