There are fish, reptiles and amphibians who do, and there's egg laying mammals, but no such exceptions among birds.

Seriemas are related to a group formed by passerines, parrots and falcons.

There are 2 species and are a smaller version of terror birds. They are from the same lineage.

I know fuckall about bird phylogeny, it's the one group I really have no fucking idea about.

It did. Ratites only thrived in environments where there was a clear lack of predators, so thet lost the ability to fly many many times. It's a perfecy example of convergent evolution. In some places, like New Zealand, distant relatives like the kiwi and the moa both lost the ability to fly in the same place. We even found kiwi ancestor fossils with wings in Oligocene New Zealand.
I find this sort of thing absolutely fascinating.
