It's not good for teeth to be exposed to air all the time. So there's the suggestion that sabertooth cats has big mastiff lips to protect the teeth. There have also been some middleground concepts with the teeth poking out a little bit but still a big jowly face that covers most of the tooth.

That's a dwarf Tarascosaurus. Normal individuals were roughly 25 ft. long, but some adult remains are significantly smaller suggesting insular dwarfism. In other words, roughly the size of Smilodon.
