Kinda well-known guy in scuba circles used to go off the beach near his house and catch lobster to grill when peeps were coming over. Probably did it 100 times. Decided to fuck around and not pay enough attention for one second in the kelp and almost ran out an air tank trying to cut himself free.

Moral of this story: dive with a buddy and don't carry a knife, carry ETM shears. They cut through a lot more materials and are safer and more effective. Plus if you end up near a polar bear, you can still use them to cut off your hand and try to pass out before the bear eats you.

Used to catch these all the time out with Dad on the fishing boat. Fucking horrifying, they're covered in poison spines and slime and have teeth like needles. They can get big. Biggest one I've seen personally was almost 36 inches long. Apparently they live for a long time and my dad (old fisherman so I take it with a grain of salt) claims that before Puget Sound was so overfished it wasnt unheard of to catch one five or six feet long.
