Anyone keep slugs n snails? I always loved slugs, and thought it would be cool to have my own Leopard Slug, but couldn't really find the best time/place to bring one home

A few months ago I was out on my deck and a relatively big one came crawling out on the pavement towards me. It must have been a sign.
He now lives in a warm house just in time before the winter. He's like a refugee! In fact, he's kind of like a dog. He wakes up, runs around his area, then when he's done, goe right back to his same doghouse (cave) every time.

Anyway, I have a couple of questions because there is actually a shockingly low amount of info on the internet about slugs' behavoir (especially as pets).

Been feeding him things that are "high calorie" like date fruit, banana, and pumpkin seeds, and afterwards he doesn't eat sometimes for several days after. Is this just because they don't need to eat as quickly after a big meal? Another idea was maybe that it was relatively cold in my room in the morning and while I'm at work (no heater on) and such cause it's winter (and crappy insulation), I know slugs and snails do hibernate, but I read only when it's below +5'C. Clearly my room isnt that cold, but maybe it's contributing to the dormancy?

Also been reading about Springtails and isopods as "janitors" recently, and I think my tank already has some springtails from the original moss I put in, they aren't bugging my slug by walking over and near it are they? There isn't very many, maybe 2 dozen, but they are hanging out near his 'cave'.

Who else has a gastropod pets? I think they're very cool.

So these are Springtails, right? I purged a few of them so that they don't multiply like crazy, but I'm fairly sure they are.

You should take a picture showing the full tank.

I only have aquatic gastropods.
>>
u really want a GAL but they're illegal here. I used to own a few garden snails a while back though. Maybe I'll get some slugs, what are some good species of slugs?
>>
>>2299430
Slugs are the worst fucking creatures on this planet and by proxy so are snails.
>>
>>2299736
They are an important decomposer for their climate
>>
>>2299886
All non-captive snails can leave the US please and thank you.
>>
Wow, slugs and snails can live up to a few years!
>>
>>2300111
I've had most of my nerite snails for 3+ years at this point.
>>
>>2300142
never heard of those before, they look really cool
>>
>>2299725
Amerifat?
I heard they sell them in Florida, if you don't just find one. I would not risk importing one but I've considered heading down there for some. They wouldn't be able to survive in my climate even if they did somehow make a great escape.
>>
I used to breed GALs in a shack out back, even sent some to other anon's on /an/ a few years ago.

Unfortunately a fire burned the shack down and I never found the spirit to start up again. It was pretty crushing.

Here's the latest pic of my Leopard slug, Abathur, wedged in the corner of his little cave. He's been quite lazy lately.
>>
>>2300906
its interesting how much their markings/color differe based on region, did some research and the ones found here are far different than the ones in the U.S.
>>
When Spring comes I'm going to experiment with feeding slugs a slurry with food dye and see if they take on the color. May make a thread come then.

I remember those threads! Sorry for your loss, but at least the descendants of your GALs live on, in loving homes.

Slugs are a disgrace ruining everyone's day
>>
I have some nerite snails.

Not sure I'd want to keep terrestrail snails or slugs as their slime trails gross me out and I would want to clean their cage constantly.

I dunno what they are but I have these small snails in my aquarium and those fuckers are FAST

Here's a smooth glass snail (aegopinella nitidula) from my garden. Been thinking of collecting some and setting up a little enclosure with them in since they're probably my favourite of the snails you find in gardens and I could release the babies.

>>2299432
Yes those are springtails, they're good for a healthy terrarium. I use sprintails, woodlice and worms in my GALS' enclosure. Woodlice are ace, really cool to watch and help keep things completely mold free, if you don't have a cleanup crew like this you'll quickly find wood decor would become unchecked moldy due to high humidity.

It's GALS with a capital S as it stands for "Giant African Land Snail", the S doesn't make it plural and it's not GAL "Giant African Land".
>>
>>2302310
>It's GALS with a capital S as it stands for "Giant African Land Snail"

True, and it's GALs as a play on words because they were my "girls".

Pull the pants out of your ass, they're damaging your circulation.
>>
>>2302310
my mistake, sorry. thanks for the correction
>>
>>2302310
Cool, I'll wait til it warms up around here cause there are no sign of woodlice anywhere and it's been -10 for a good while up until a week ago
>>
>>2302310
I have one of these as a pet. Along with your classic introduced garden snail. It is very inactive. Maybe just nocturnal, but I almost never catch it out of its shell.
>>
>>2302763
Yeah, they're nocturnal. Most land gastropods are. Sometimes you can coax them out by spraying the enclosure so they think it's raining but most of the time they'll wait until the cover of dark.
>>
Placed a little bit of apple beside my Limax while he was sleeping, smelled it, perked right up, and went to town. I guess they really do have good noses!

I keep trying to upload a webm of it but it says the "Image resolution is too large"" it's a 2.12MB webm.

>really chill bro, used to feed him cucumbers
>liked to crawl on my arms and eat my hairs
>used to sing to him to make him come out his shell
>one day, Pipi goes missing
>look for him for days
>he's gone
>queue almost a year later when we're renovating the house
>decide to move some cardboard boxes on my wardrobe
>boxes have holes in them like someone chewed them through
>clearly the sign of snail "bites"
>turn room upside down, still no sign of the fucker

that's right, boys and girls, I had a pet snail and it actually ran away
>>
the springtails are dope, they wait til the poop is moldy, then eat it and dry it out so it doesn't fester. then its inert and just turns into the soil

>>
>>2303078
That's a grove snail (cepaea nemoralis) they're really pretty.

But unfortunately snails are 100% deaf. Something else probably awoke him when you sang such as scent which is a huge part of their lives. Or being handled if you picked it up.
>>
>>2303750
To be fair, that camouflage is pretty dank, would probably fool most predators.

>>2304020
That's silly, snakes are technically completely deaf, but they still sense soundwaves and stuff. Snails probably can too.
>>
>>2304020
>>2304255
I think it (the snail) was just responding to the vibrations, they supposedly like rhythmic sounds, or at least respond to them in some way.

very cool macro, I like the angle

Something I found interesting, I fed my slug pumpkin seeds about almost a week ago, and since then, white apple, and he's still pooping out the green color of pumpkin seeds. Neat to know that it takes them so long for food to fully pass through them.
>>
Leopard Slugs are the fastest land slug, they are territorial and aggressive and fight/cannibalize other slugs. they don't fuck with gardens unlike other species and generally eat decomposing stuff.

They are also the type of slug that does the weird "dangling and then opening up the huge fan thing" mating ritual too. Why WOULDN'T I want one, lol

is it illegal for me to ship GALS in the US
IF I had some and they happened to have babies? would there be a way of hiding the fact that there is a snail in the package?
>>
>>2308116
ship a plant or some shit and make the baby snail look like something that accidentally got in from your garden?
>>
>>2308126
oh good idea, I think I might just do that
>>
You are absolute fucking idiots if you're thinking of shipping GALS into the US.

"Tee-hee, it accidentally got onto this cabbage I guess!" You think they've not heard that?
>>
>>2308204
The snails are already here though. d
o you really think they monitor packages that closely for snails while shipping within the us lol
>>
>>2305501
>>2303750
Are these safe to keep? I've heard they can house internal parasites.
>>
>>2308424
If you eat them you can get sick, thats about it.
Doubtful you'd pick anything up thru skin coontact
>>
>>2308471
Mainly those kind of things attack people who are weak/sick already or have a bad immune system. A healthy average person will brush off bacteria and virusses, orhterwise we'd all be getting salmonella and e.coli every other week.
