OP, honestly any healthy-looking, well-trained dog would get my attention.

I disagree. I'm not the biggest fan of small dogs personally, but seeing a guy with a small dog that he clearly loves is great because it shows his masculinity is not fragile.

As for large dogs/traditionally "guard/attack" dogs, I wouldn't automatically assume it was a "trying to compensate" thing unless there were other things about the guy that made him seem douchey/fake tough guy and insecure.

Though probably the ones would attract/impress me the most are smart, athletic types like border collies, aussies, etc. They're just my favorite type of dog and seeing someone with a happy, healthy, well-trained herding dog is just HNNNNG cause it shows they really have their shit together and know how to properly care for/train dogs.

The only turn-off breeds would be things like pugs or "American bullies" and that's just because of their health problems, and I can't get behind someone supporting the creation of dogs whose lives are suffering because "it looks cool/cute" (and they don't even look cool or cute FFS.) It's different if the dog was a rescue/adopted from a shelter, though. That's still good but these types of dogs would be less initially appealing to me.

I think the poodle is a pretty obvious answer here.

A Jack Russell terrier although you'll have your work cut out for you to train it.
They're seriously awesome little dogs but they're work to make sure it knows you're the big dog.

They're the bossiest dogs and will boss around all other breeds of dogs within days, huge personality, unbelievably cute faces, hyper intelligent, super athletic and super convenient. If a Jack Russell sleeps in your bedroom, it's a small dog bed, or it takes up a small amount of space on the bed.

If your only experience with the breed comes from sub par BYB dogs I can see how you came to that conclusion.
The two I've had personally, as well as several others owned by people knowledgeable with the breed have all been highly intelligent.
Some of the puppy mill dogs resulting from the Disney boom, as well as rescue dogs I've been around have been dumb as a post however.

i guess the most 'attractive' dogs to me, when i see a man having them, are large and very intelligent breeds that need a lot of dedication. huskies yes, akitas yes, doberman pinschers yes, border collies yes. i assume if it's an athletic breed the guy probably is in shape and goes for runs with it and shit.

a beagle is not a good example since i hate their barking and they don't look all that cute to me. pitbulls are cute but the majority of men owning them are just there for the tough guy act like OP said. i used to lump dobermans in with them but most dobies i've met are extremely calm and just exude confidence and chillness, which is nice.

i've got three female boxers and girls love them, whenever a girl goes to my home my dogs always want to play and ladies dont feel threatened. thats why i think boxers are atractive: they always are looking for playing and running, plus my first dog was a female rottweiler and it was a very peacefull doggo so it could be usefull when picking up chicks.
