How do you feel about cats taking prozac?
My stepmother puts her cats on prozac, one because he has went through chemotherapy and supposedly was never the same. he pisses on a couch when she leaves
the other is afraid of his tail, though I think its just him being a goofy cat
she works a lot and doesn't spend as much time with them as I think a cat owner really should.
I feel like these cats do not need medicine, they just need to be played with and loved
she takes very good care of them outside of the things I mentioned.
What are your thoughts /an/?

It is justified in some cases.

can you elaborate?
I've had awful experiences on Prozac and other SSRIs and if these kitties are feeling anything I felt I feel terrible for them, cat is not for mind numbing medication
>>
>medication is bad
Like humans, animals can have psychological issues. Also like humans, just because some medication doesn't work for you doesn't mean they're all bad or it won't work wonders for someone else. I'm not on anything but I've had some truly awful experiences before I did get something that helped. I also think could be harder to treat animals for psych issues because we are self aware and can understand when and why we are just being 'crazy'.

I don't think pissing on the couch warrants for medication though and I think alternatives should be tried first.

Too add on, I'm not talking about animals that are a little sad or have fairly mild separation anxiety. I don't think it'd be fair for an animal to be terrified for it's entire life either. Medication can also help these animals 'wean' into normal behaviors so they won't be on them forever.

I understand that in extreme circumstances medication such as Prozac can be helpful but the one cat is just a bit goofy and "afraid of his tail" though he seems to just be playing
I don't think all medication is bad but SSRIs are a different beast

i have a cat that lashed out randomly. on prozac she doesn't do that but otherwise acts normal.

Some animals are just so high strung and anxious they need it to be normal. One of my dogs is really really high strung and I have thought about putting him on a very mild dose.

My cat is likely going on Prozac because they think she has feline hyperesthesia syndrome. I can stop her if I cuddle her and put her on my lap, but I can't keep a cat attached to me 10 hours a day. For a few hours, sure, but not all day. So medication it is.
