This is a problem with all white, purebred dogs. Choose a dalmatian with a "mask" or lots of spots on its face, they are less likely to be deaf.
However, a reputable breeder will have every dalmatian pup undergo a BAER hearing test, so this is a non issue.
While Dalmatians do have the specific problems you listed, it is possible to find a healthy dog, just expect to pay a premium.

Weirdly, New Zealand. I had no idea even what they were until I was speaking to the local vet about them. I described them as looking a bit like Russian terriers -- they had something resembling a Schnauzer cut but they were the weirdest fucking looking dogs I'd ever seen. The vet knew them though and told me what breed they really were because they were in the know.

It's not that they're bad for a first time owner, but definitely bad for someone who hasn't done their research and doesn't know what they're getting into. DESU for first time owners I'd recommend looking into breeds that have high trainability levels. A dog that's eager to please is much easier to deal with than a stubborn, strong-willed dog--intelligent or not.

I'd like to get a large breed dog as a first pet now that I own a house.

Should I go with a shelter rescue or one from a breeder? Will it make much of a difference in how they bond with me if they have had a previous owner?

If I went with a breeder, what breeds should I start researching that are fairly inexpensive? I'm not looking for a show dog just a pet.
