you can't really see the mouthparts usually because they're small/hidden that's probably a lot of it. they're also circular and most-often not elongated which is cuter

could a crab actually live in a skull like that?

yes

Yes, technically. They prefer certain shapes though, and will probably abandon the skull once something better comes along.

I'm sure you can get a fake one made of non toxic materials that is exactly what they need/love on the inside. But only looks like a skull on the outside.

Where you could get one like that though, I have no idea. I don't own hermit crabs of any species so I can't even tell you where people get the real shells from, let alone the decorative ones.
>>
>>2293194
The funny thing is, is that spider meat is actually delicious. And not just spiders, but scorpions too.
>>
>>2293675
I agree on the spiders, but scorpions are not that good in my opinion

>>
Hermit crabs are not crabs.
They don't even look like them.
>>
>>2294704
Hermit crabs can chirp at each other.
>>
>>2295254
Oh my god it's so cute too. Hermit craps are max cuteness.
>>
>>2293673
Why does it have to be fake? What's wrong with an actual skull if the crab is large enough? They already live in dead or abandoned animal husks, not to mention trash.
>>
>>2295034
If they aren't crabs, then what are they then? Lobsters?
>>
>>2295320
Because skulls are mostly calcium, and calcium dissolves in water/high moisture, eventually becoming brittle and breaking apart. Not only that, but as it dissolves it leaks into the water, changing the PH balance and causing other dangerous spikes in the chemical make up.

Nobody wants to come home and find their pets dead.

This is why all saltwater aquariums have sumps and protein skimmers and a shit ton of other equipment, compared to freshwater tanks that can usually get by with just a filter and heater, due to all of the live plants that soak up ammonia and nitrites/nitrates, as well as the calcium and carbon gases.

If a saltwater aquarium DOESN'T have all that then the owner is a fucking pleb who doesn't know jack shit. Of course, the same goes for freshwater aquariums that lack live aquatic plants.

Now, granted, this is probably different for terrestrial hermit crabs that breathe air, and spend the majority of their time on dry land. But they still need high humidity to stay alive, which means the skull is still going to fuck up their aquarium.
>>
>>2295034

Don't taste like them either
>>
>>2295366
In a saltwater tank calcium shouldn't dissolve unless organic pollutants are causing acidification, which is a problem.

not that dissolving bones would be bad for a saltwater tank. We add calcium and such to the tank on purpose.

the bigger problem would be trace amounts of rotting flesh that aren't completely cleaned out. Those would pollute the shit out of the thing with nitrates and phosphates. Though as you point out we run tons of different filters to get rid of that stuff.

The main obstacle I see is that any hermit big enough to live in a skull would eat it.

Here ya go OP
One of my blue-legged hermits got chased out of his shell the other day.

so rare pic of hermit crayub nekkid
enjoy his curly little ass

don't worry, he survived and got to put his little pants back on.
>>
>>2295373
Yes, calcium itself isn't bad in an aquarium, especially for any creature with an exoskeleton. However, I didn't want to TL;DR my fellow anons with technical "mumbo jumbo" especially the ones who have never had an aquarium before.

So I tried to keep it as plain and simple as possible, so the ones who might be interested would search out the answers for themselves, and hopefully find what they learn exciting enough to get sucked into an amazing hobby, lol.

But yes, that's why I mentioned PH and ammonia/nitrites/nitrates/ and protein skimmers, all tied into the possibility of bits of rotting flesh and grease and such dissolving into the water and royally screwing up the stability of the aquarium.

>The main obstacle I see is that any hermit big enough to live in a skull would eat it.

It wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if a hermit crab chewed on bone, would it? I mean, sure, the skull would probably wind up wrecked, but the crab itself would be fine, wouldn't it?

I know that SOME bones are safe for aquariums, such as cuttlebones, the same kind you give to birds.
>>
>>2295428
That's fucking adorable mate.

But what is that huge blob thingy next to it? A snail on the aquarium glass? Why is it so huge? Is it just a trick of perspective, or is it really that large?

that little crab is about 1/4 inch long.

You don't need skimmer if you don't keep coral, you cuck.
>>
Once when I was a teenager I caught two hermit crabs at the beach and let them run around on the beach house balcony. I stopped watching them for a couple minutes until all of a sudden I heard a loud CRACK sound below the balcony. Sure enough, one of the crabs had banzai'd over the edge and cracked on the pavement. From that moment on I made sure to leave the qts where they belong

Right, enjoy all that protein buildup decaying into pure ammonia and killing off everything in your tank, dumb ass.
>>
>>2297537
the protein a skimmer removes is primarily in the form of biomass (algae and bacteria mostly).

Biomass does indeed accumulate in aquaria, but that's a goal, not a problem. You want to have thriving populations of microorganisms for your macroorganisms to eat.

if all the organisms in your tank suddenly die and turn to ammonia you've got much bigger problems than lacking a protein skimmer.

not having a protein skimmer isn't a problem. Lots of people do just fine without them. You do have to understand what they do before you can choose to use one or not though. Mostly what they do is remove planktonic algae and bacteria. Secondarily what they do is strip CO2 and add O2. Both processes tend to raise pH.
