Even though these aren't real animals, I'm wondering what these creatures came from. I think they're supposed to be horses, but I'm not sure.

You were right, they're from some horse exhibition in Europe. Apparently these designs were done by Dixon himself, being horses that have survived the Holocene extinction and diversified in the Posthomic 50,000,000 years after man.
