For fun, let's all take a picture of our doggos on our next walk. Pic related, it's my pitbull Brutus on our walk along a hiking trail. Isn't she a nice and peaceful looking dog?

Nightwalkers especially welcome.

This is my dachshund, Davey, on the left, and my little spaniel mutt, April, on the right. We just got done with a nice walky and I sat down for a dinner and an IPA.

They did not get any beer but I did give them a tiny little bit of my hamburger.

I'm also incredibly jealous of all these beautiful walking places. There aren't any around here that are peaceful or secluded and for some reason, people around here seem to think that walking your dog means dragging them around and refusing to let them sniff or look at anything; I've had a few ask me if something's wrong when my dog is just snuffling and exploring and being a dog.

Do you drive? It's always worth it to get out of your area to look for a really nice nature spot. My favourite hiking trail is a 40 minute drive away but it's worth the journey
>>
>>2285427
Haha my pup does this too!

Also, side note - does anyone else's dog take FOREVER to find a poop spot when the ground is snowy? My guy will circle for 30 seconds, squat, and then randomly get up and repeat the process at the next grassy patch

Unfortunately, it's all private ranchland or inner city. I know a bug collector who drives an hour just to find areas he's allowed to collect on. I'm thinking about asking him about some of his favorite spots.

He is a mix, but he is also a rescue so I don't think I will ever know (both of them are). I have a long list of what random strangers have said he was mixed with, and lab/dachshund is easily the most common.

>>2285425
>people around here seem to think that walking your dog means dragging them around and refusing to let them sniff or look at anything
I've never understood people who do this. I see walking the dog as something you do for the dog, so I always let my doggos sniff and explore as much as they want. As long as they don't pull or eat stuff on the ground, I pretty much let them do what they want.
>>
>>2285571
Some people don't get how important a sense smell is for dogs, so they don't realize the most exciting part of the walk for a dog is the smelling
>>
>>2285364
I didn't know Brutus is a female name.
>>
>>2285571

I take mine to the backyard to shit first so our walks are mostly about exploration. Besides, letting him sniff tires him out faster than a brisk walk anyways.

I always feel awful when I see little dogs (most people around here have Yorkies or Chihuahuas) being yanked around on a shitty flexi-lead and kicked for lagging behind.

>Whoever owns Brutus the pitbull saved her from certain death.

He's right, Brutus was just a puppy when I rescued her, who knows what could have happened if I hadn't. Honestly, considering how much Brutus has enriched my life, it's worth the stigma of pitbull ownership. I'm never offended when I'm walking her and someone crosses the street to avoid us.

She's a great pitbull and she's my best friend.
>>
>>2285862
It's so refreshing to hear pitbull owners taking responsibility. It's good owners like you anon who might end the negative stigma associated with pitbull terriers.
>>
>>2285427
Anon, how long do you walk your dog for? My dog just refuses to be out, maybe she needs a jacket?
>>
>>2285871
Not that anon, but it depends on a few factors like the size/amount of fur on your dog and their acclimation to the cold. Small dogs will nearly always need coats. Big dogs with short hair or no under coats may need them in inclement weather. Even a dog like a husky might need a coat if it's gone from a life in Florida to its first blizzard in Montana.

Even though my golden mix doesn't really need a coat most of the time, I keep one for when it gets below 20°F. He loves the snow but he shivers after too long.

If you want to be a really obsessive cunt and follow training guidelines to the letter then the dogs "heel" position and "walk" positions are always on your side. Usually left side. Otherwise if the dog is walking in front of you then the dog is effectively leading you. So what anon is doing is criticizing someone because they don't think they are properly walking a dog.
Granted I think anon is being ridiculous because anybody who has spent more than five minutes training a dog knows that everything can't be done by the book, and every dog learns and behaves different.
>>
>>2289356

Not to mention that while a constant heel might look great in a show ring, it's good for your dog both physically and mentally to be allowed to sniff and explore. I get annoyed when someone walks up after I've given my dog permission to sniff around and goes "Who's walking who?" Like, bitch, this walk is for his enrichment. If I'm in such a hurry that I can't let him sniff, I just don't bring him.
>>
>>2289360
This is a very good point, thank you.
I agree with you that a handler should "loosen up" unless it's a special case doggy. These animals pick up on your body language they will be less stressed if the handler is not focused on needless shit.
>>
>>2289360
Fuck I hate when people make snarky comments like that.

My dog loves to carry things and he gets hyper focused when he has something-- he doesn't stop to sniff as much, won't care about people when we walk last, etc - so when our walk is ending and we're close to the house, I let him hold part of his leash. I'll still be holding the handle so I have full control, but people have made stupid comments before. Just let me walk my dog in peace dude
>>
>>2289360
I like my dogs walk where ever they want with respect to me. One likes to stay by my side in a classic heel position, if not lagging behind. The other likes to be out front. They have all the freedom they want to sniff, explore, And have fun on the walk. I am taking them on walks for their good, not mine.
>>
>>2289374

Pretty much this. I have three rules for walks but that's it:

>no going in yards
>no pulling
>no tripping anyone with the leash

Other than those, if I'm not in a crowded area, there's no reason to demand my dog keep a perfect heel.

granted
you need to let it sniff everything, do it's thing

but it walks by your side and never pulling the leash or choosing where we're going

also walks should be done with a lot of patience and constantly training, rewarding good behavior, correcting bad
>>
>>2290439

You're missing one small factor.

A lot of us don't care if our dog walks in front of us (again, not talking about crowded places like city streets). A dog walking in front isn't exerting dominance, they're just goddamn happy to be outside and exploring. Besides, if mine is in front, I won't accidentally step on his paws and he won't trip me, and as long as the leash is loose and he isn't pulling then I won't make him heel.

Those ears are ducking majestic.

What a lovely picture. Your dog is beautiful, anon

Love those ears.

No Dachshund. Legs look normal.

The "stigma" comes from every short coated medium sized dog being called a pitbull. More spoiled ass small breeds bite than the evil pits rotts & dobies combined. The problem is the owners. So many assholes get a dog and think the dogs will train themselves.

Is that a Tri-colour Collie? I love those.

what a beautiful doggo

>start in backyard
>take dog out on leash
>if dog pulls do not move
>when dog does not pull make dog sit
>treat and praise
>take step
>if dog pulls do not move
>rinse and repeat until dog learns that pull=no walkie
>>

Thanks. I'm pretty relieved that the idiot who dumped him on us didn't have him clipped. He's got his tail still, too.

Thank you, m8

This, except making the dog sit is not really a "necessary" step in teaching them not to pull
>>
>all these majestic pictures
Everytime I stop to take a picture my dog decides to annouce hinself to the world by pissing on the nearest mailbox or taken a massive shit
>>

>dick out almost every single fucking time

Also, do you guys let your dogs play in ponds and stuff? I've heard conflicting opinions on whether or not it's a good idea. He's vaccinated and it's not like he wouldn't be taken to the vet if anything went wrong. Pic related.
>>
>>2297349
I wouldn't leave a lead on him while he's swimming. It could get caught on something or tangled up in his legs.

Yeah, I do. She likes swimming and it's a good way to get exercise and still keep cool in the summer (although she'll still waltz right into the creek in winter no matter how cold it is, so I have to be careful.)
