Well Roy, if it's a common occurrence you should bring a walking stick or something else to keep distance when out on walks. Dog can't hurt you if it can't get close.

Just carry pepper spray or mace and spray the shit out of it if it gets close.
Unless it's really big, you should be able to scare a dog away easily and if it gets too close stomp its fucking face in.
