>>2275667
Well he/she turned out beautiful!
>>2275668
Yep! She passed her CGC with flying colors, is great with other animals (including dogs, cats, horses, cows, and toddlers) and is overall the smartest and most loyal companion a person could ask for. I'm so glad the redneck piece of shit who bred her had the good sense to take the puppies to a shelter instead of giving them away on craigslist or dumping her in the woods.
>>2275627
Are Rottweilers quiet? Do they like to play?
Do you find their faces ugly?
>>2275673
>CGC
I've been wanting to do this but have been slacking a little as the original reason I wanted to do it (CGC might persuade an otherwise unaccepting apartment landlord to accept my dog) became a non-issue.
I'm pretty confident about all of the items on the list except the stay/come commands. How did you work on those? What methods were the most effective?
He could likely pass the urban cgc already, but he just doesn't have very good recall and hasn't really been able to grasp 'stay'.
>quiet?
Yes, unless you're a stranger infringing their territory
>like to play?
Every rottie I've ever owned was playful, even in their dying days. So I'm gonna say yes.
>ugly
Absolutely not. Even rotties from inferior breeding stock are pretty dogs.
I will say this: they don't live long and their passing is never less devastating.
Nice to see a pitbull-friendly thread for a change.
Here's my pitbull, Brutus.

Is it possible to find a purebred high quality Rottweiler puppy that will live longer than me for under $500?
>>2275701
>that will live longer than me
No dog has the life expectancy of a human. Any dog living over twenty years is rare, most breeds usually last ten to fifteen years.
>>2275706
okay but what if I don't want to feel anything when the dog dies
>>2275701
>purebred high quality Rottweiler puppy
>under $500
Sorry bro, that's never going to happen. To do all the necessary health tests (hips, elbows, heart, eyes especially) on the sire and dam (or breed from those that are certified) and to raise the puppies with the best food, the best socialization, and the best support (a good breeder will stay in touch with you for the life of the dog in case you need help and will take the dog back if something happens to you)
All that shit makes for a $1500-$2500 pup, easy. If the breeder wants less than that, they're skipping the health shit, which makes for beautiful dogs that drop dead at age 7.
>>2275680
The stay and come commands were actually the easy stuff for my dog.
Ever since she was a puppy we made her sit and wait for treats or food, so it helps to have a base level of restraint. The key is for the dog to learn that a command is the action plus the release. For example, you say "sit" and the dog must sit-- and wait-- until you say "ok!" (or "good job" or whatever-- just say it every time) then they get the treat. Start out by making him wait only a few seconds, gradually moving up to minutes. If he breaks the command (like walks away from a sit) then quietly take him by the collar and physically put him back in a sit where he was. Don't say anything. Then say "ok!" and give him the treat. It helps to practice with a leash at first so if he tries to leave you don't have to chase him. Don't ever let him leave during a command! He'll learn that commands are optional and this will create problems, trust me. If he's having difficulty coming (phrasing!), then you've got to find a powerful enough motivator. For my dog it's Little Caesar's cheese sheet pizza. She'd kill God for me if it meant a piece of that. The trick for everything is motivation from them and patience from you. I hope that helps!

It's part of dog ownership. Doggos are man's best friend. The least we can do for them is give them an amazing life, from their first to last breath.
>>2275727
>go to the forest and tame a wild Rottweiler myself
I actually live about 20 km from Rottweil and I have yet to see a pack of wild Rottweilers...of the four-legged variety anyway. Shiiit, to move my dog here from the US was $2400, so it would be cheaper to just find a good breeder.
>>2275732
Oh shit we have a real German. Do you pronounce it as RotVeiler? do you say the commands "plotz" and then "nemfuter" when your dog eats?
And yeah seeing wild rottweilers are really rare. You really have to set up camp in the woods

Simply die before the dog does, it's not hard.
Father's dog, people he got him from claim he's a 'pitbull' but this is the American south so that can mean anything. I think my father is too mean with him, but he's probably the most gentle doggo I've ever seen. I've only seen him show aggression once, and it was when I was a dumbfuck and patted him hard on the back when he was sleeping. For a split second the look in his eye was like he was going to kill me, then you could see him catch himself and we had a moment where he was like 'you know you almost died just then, right'? And I was kinda like '... yeah.'.
>>2275701
>live longer than me
Depends on your current life expectancy. If you're young, which you probably are, then no dog will out-live you I'm afraid.
>under 500$
A rottie is about 2500$ from a registered breeder. Pic related, she's a Von Evman. She, her parents, grandarents, great grandparents and so-on were all tested extensively for health issues (eyes, hips, patella, gait, etc) as well as registered. She's what they consider "pet quality" because of the slight sootiness in her paws.
She's the first rottie I've ever had that didn't grow into a bad hip or other health issue. In fact, she's so healthy, smart, obedient and full of energy that it had us thinking she may be a lab-mix but nope. Just a 100% healthy european rottie.
>>2275727
2500 really isn't that big of an investment. 1. 500 deposit to breeder.
2. Take 2000 out of the months pay.
3. ???
4. Years of love.
>>2276847
>A rottie is about 2500$
holy fuck
I guess rotties aren't the dog for me. How cheap are purebred pitbulls?
>>2276848
There is no such thing as a cheap -purebred- with pedigree papers and tracked lineage, unless for some reason the breeder has to find the dog a new home, or the dog is in a breed specific rescue. Anything less is a BYB and you have to know if you want to take the chance on that or not.
>>2276848
>find a rottie rescue
>adopt puppy
>acquire pet insurance
>???
>love and devotion
>>2276866
Is it possible to pay the adoption people to let me take a newborn puppy so I can have it as young as possible?
>>2276877
Anything is possible.
You pay the right person at an animal shelter and you have endless boa feed. Not that I'd suggest or endorse that sort of thing.
>>2276877
You probably wouldn't need to pay, because sometimes they get a litter of pups in without a mother that have to be bottle fed. Let them know that you are interested in caring for such a litter, and ask them where you get the training to do this properly. Showing that kind of initiative will get you on their good side.
Boxweiler
its something
>>2276877
From my understanding, breed specific rescues getting puppies is pretty rare, and when they do, they go instantly.
Perhaps you could start fostering for a rottie rescue and building a good relationship. Maybe they will be willing to help you when they get in puppies.

I live in a very rural area where she is free to roam, and is in and out most of the day.

>>2277531
That's a good-looking dog. Most rotties I see are overweight. Refreshing to see one that isn't
>>2276848
The initial cost of a dog is a tiny fraction of what it will cost you over it's lifetime.
You could easily spend that over again or probably even more in the first year with vet bills, food, worming tablets, flea & tick monthly treatments, bedding etc. these all go up in price based on the size of the dog.
Puppies do random shit that is really dangerous I.e. eating rocks, jumping out of car windows, running away from you because their recall sucks. An emergency trip to the vet (which will probably happen several times in their life) can cost you thousands of dollars.
Also most purebreds have heridatary health problems that are expensive to treat.
If you can't afford a dog don't get one until you can.

To Rottweiler owners:
I keep reading that Rotties are aggressive towards people/animals that are not part of their pack. Are you guys nervous when you take them on walks or when you meet other dogs? What if the Rottweiler attacks, can you go to jail for that?
>>2278601
my brother walked a rotty from a shelter volunteering. he could barely control its strength (and he is a strong dude) and it attacked someone's dog but he got the fuck outa there. Rottys are good dogs but need extensive training. strongest bite of any dog.
>>2278601
I own the Mastiff not the Rottie and yes I have to take into consideration the Mastiffs instinctual behaviour. I avoid crowded built up areas with him and try to avoid contact with people I dont know if they can behave correctly around dogs or not.
>>2278608

>>2279741
>>2279744
HNNNNG. He's adorable. I just about died of cuteness from that second pic.
For flea/tick prevention, I use the knock-off brand of Frontline Plus (it's called Pet Armor Plus and it's the same ingredients, just an off brand so it's much cheaper.) You can get it at pet stores or places like Walmart, Target, etc.
And if I'm taking my dog out in the woods or something where there might be a lot of ticks, or if we're gonna be outside for a while where lots of flies/mosquitoes would try to bother her, I also spray her with some natural insect repellant for good measure. GNC sells a nice one, I get it from PetSmart and it's pretty cheap.
Make sure you get him on monthly heartworm preventative too--I use Heartgard and I get it from my vet.
>>2279741
Unless we know exactly where you are, then there's not much point recommending brands. Certain geographical areas have fleas more resistant to one brand than other.
Best bet is to ring your vet and see what they suggest. Then either buy it directly from your vet, or find out its active ingredient online and find a knock-off brand with the same active ingredient.
Your vet will at least know what works in your area, and as the other anon said you can get wormers sorted at the same time plus vaccinations which I'll assume pupster needs.
>>2279863
You want to get puppo on flea meds sooner rather than later. Rather than quiz the vet on the active ingredient, I'd be tempted to buy whatever she/he advises at the time - take it home and then go from there, then that gives you a good month to find something else.
Honestly, vets aren't out to rip you of your money. Don't be afraid to buy them from a professional if needs be!
Go have a read of Ian Dunbar's before/after you get your puppy too- it's a free PDF online and is fantastic for explaining how to properly socialise/raise a puppy.
Enjoy him!
