Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

You guys think this shit can grow hair grass on a 20 tall?
>>
>>2274185
Its a grow light more than a tank light and I'd be a little worried about algae growth. Are you going to be running CO2?
>>
>>2274185
It might be too much light unless you're using CO2.

>>2274188
what do you mean? there's no difference besides the two besides how nicely the fixtures sit on the tank.
>>
>>2274188
>>2274205
I am gonna be using co2 and thats what I was worried with the most I hear mixtures of grow lights are this or that or there just lights and both work
>>
>>2274208
you can always mount from the ceiling with hooks so it's farther away from the tank, or take out one of the bulbs. I think it will be fine on your tank, esp. since you're using co2.
>>
Planning on making a planted tank with a pair of firemouth cichlids as the centerpiece, what i want to know is if they will eat my plants? I dont mind some grazing but worried they will totally destroy them.
>>
Alright question. I have a 30g freshwater tank with a gravel sunstrate, I have some water wisteria growing in it and doing fine, but I would like to put some soil under the gravel. How exactly should I go about this? I have read a shit ton of things giving my conflicting answers. Whats your guys advice?
>>
>>2274286
to get it under the gravel, the only thing you can do is a complete tear down. take out the fish and put them in a spare tank or bucket with an airstone. drain the water. take out the hardscape and plants. remove gravel, give a quick rinse. then put your soil into the tank and start adding everything else.
>>
>>2274268
>planted cichlid tank

They like to dig shit up, if you attached the plants to driftwood or rock they'll be fine. Firemouth are omnivores and as long as they're fed everyday, and enough, your plants will be fine. Just don't expect to have any carpeting plants or anything in the substrate directly.
>>
So what kind of light does /aq/ recommend for a 60 gallon tank thats dimensions are 12.75 in L x 48.5 in W x 25 in H? I was thinking the finnex planted pro but i need an experienced aquarist thoughts on this

https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00GH9HURE/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480913912&sr=8-1&keywords=finnex%2Bplanted%2Bplus&pi=SX200_QL40&th=1&psc=1
>>
This may sound kind of cruel but I'm looking for 1 or more fish that I can put in to my 48 gallon aquarium to do some population control. The tank is inhabited by both guppies and mollies, and I'm looking for something that won't just kill for fun, but actually eat the fry and smaller guppies. I would prefer one that wouldn't bother the full grown Mollies, but I do have a spare 20 gallon that I could keep the Mollies that I want to keep in, so any suggestion is appreciated.
>>
>>2274333
Crayfish maybe?
>>
>>2274310
Kek i know, but i am planning to have everything anchored down well.
>>

So i bought this for my anchor worms that are on my albino corys I'm hoping it will work. It's says not for use with crustaceans and my amano are pretty small and will be very difficult to remove from the tank. Do you think they are guaranteed to die if I use this treatment?
>>
>>2274356
I have seen this exact problem on every aquatic thread on here stfu
>>
>>2274356
Shows the stuff in it fucks up the molting cycle of invertebrates, so seems like it'd definitely nuke all your shrimp.
>>
>>2274356
It's copper based, your shrimp are gonna die. Get API general cure.
>>
>>2274359
I read up on this but it doesnt seem to treat anchor worms, have you used this peronally?
>>
>>2274356
>>2274361
Fenbendazole and praziquantel are safe for inverts.
>>
>>2274319

Would the whole dome light shit work for a 20 tall I have two spare domes i could use but I'm not sure how to go about this method I also hear its cheap sorry to keep bringing this up but i just want a healthy planted tank
>>
>>2274587
sure, it'd work fine.

what are your questions? it's pretty simple, just purchase the reflectors and the daylight bulbs and either find a way to mount them or clip them on the side of the tank.

I don't see the kelvin rating, but it should be fine. depending on the plants you keep you might want to go with a larger wattage. anything CFL that says "daylight" on it will work though, honestly.

Got a tank and betta today.
Any recommendations on what to do with the tank?
I was thinking maybe water lettuce and fake plants?
>>
>>2274613
I've never grown hairgrass, but looks like it needs moderate light so you should be okay. make sure the lights are oriented as vertically as you can get them, it makes a big difference.
>>
>>2274352
>>2274333
I wouldn't suggest one, especially if you want to keep it, they grow fuck huge. However there's smaller aquatic turtles that's do the same that can live in the 48g if you decide to migrate the mollies in the 20g, like a Southern Painted
>>
>>2274631
I would suggest a water conditioner. Look at dem chlorine bubbles.
>>
>>2274621

I'm moving back into my mother's house for a few months (she's going away and wants me to mind the place) and the only place I can really set my tanks up is in the basement. However, the light down there doesn't work, so unless I bring a flashlight or carry lamp down there it's pitch black. Can I just keep my fish in the dark for a few months without them being permanently fucked up?
>>
>>2274643
Lol
>>
>>2274333
Remove some of the cover that the fry are using and feed less.
>>
Just rescued a piranha from a guy willing to flush him to sell the tank he was in. Got the tank and piranha for 20 bucks.
7" Red Belly Piranha in a 25g tank. Got him home, he seems very slow and nervous. Not very skittish. He did eat, though, so thats a good sign.
Is the tank too small to house him? I'm not going to be able to re-home him for several months, it looks like. I'll try to take a picture later, but thanks for any advice.
>>
>>2274733
should be doable so long as you keep the water clean. why can't you rehome him?
>>
So i have a question, will 3 30w LED flood lights be enough to grow in a low tech 55g tank? Planning on some northern milfoil, amazon sword, micro sword, and java fern in a primarily rock-based hardscape.
>>
>>2274733
More than likely a Pacu, not a piranha. Daily water changes, and keep an eye on your hardness and pH. They favor soft water conditions. Feed plants and invertebrates. At full size. i would recommend a 40+ gal.
>>
>>2274733
Just rehome it. It'll sit in the back of your head all day knowing he's not in a proper tank. How the fuck was the nigger going to flush a 7 inch pirhana?

This is the fish. At least, I THINK it's a redbelly. Not sure now because >>2274774 .

>>2274738
I did ask the LFS but they said they don't accept them. I have an ad up online for free collection now, but the little guy is growing on me.

>>2274775
I have no idea, it was a spur of the moment decision to ask for the fish, too.

I have no idea how old he is. He seems to be a little more settled now than my previous post so thats good.
>>
>>2274786
That's a piranha alright.

Cool fish, but they are messy and like to be in groups.
>>
>>2274786
That is for sure a redbelly pacu. Follow what i said if you decide to keep him. Used to have a 150gal with a small school.
>>
>>2274808
It's a piranha. 150 isn't close to large enough for one pacu. They shouldn't be kept at all.
>>
>>2274810
You sir, are an idiot. Piranhas aren't regularly sold in the aquarium trade. Pacu's, on the other hand, are.

Might want a bit more experience before you make uneducated claims.

Does it have pointy teeth, or flat ones that look like a human's?
>>
>>2274786
>This is the fish. At least, I THINK it's a redbelly. Not sure now because
Feed it and take a look at its mouth. Piranhas have a v- or triangle-shaped mouth. The pacu has more of a hook in its lower lip.
>>
>>2274811
You didn't even try m8. You'll never catch anything good with that.
>>
>>2274815
Only one way to truly find out. Stick your balls in the water. If it bites them off its a pacu.
>>
>>2274808
>>2274815
>>2274816
Reeeeeeee! It's clearly a red belly piranha. You can easily tell.

It took me ages just to find red cherries, and then I made several hundred off of my colony supplying an aquarium club in my little province's main city with them. Even today there's hardly anything online here, and the shipping is ridiculous.

Are diy filters a meme or could this actually handle a 10 gallon which I plan to use as an apple snail nursery.

it's absolutely fine for biological filtration. obv won't do much for mechanical, though.

I wanna add 6 cory catfish to my 60 gallon tank. Its cycling rn but just planning ahead, can you mix species of corys? Like maybe 2 albino, 2 emerald, and 2 panda corys? Or would you have to keep them the same species? (Also posted in old thread my bad)

>>
>>2274841

>>
>>2274869
Yeah but Asian Arowana anon. They can have them! Even though they are being bred like crazy in fish farms they're still illegal to have in the USA. I want one. I like my silvers but those Asians make my nuts hard.
>>
So my local petco had tons of colorful baby bettas that some breeder mostly likely dumped at their store. The lady there offered one of them to me for free so i got what i think is a female but cant tell yet since she doesnt have the white spot yet.

I already have a female betta. Should i start a 10 gallon sorority tank or get one of those nano tanks that fit multiple bettas separately?

Just ordered 8 Celestial Pearl Danios / Galaxy Rasboras from my lfs.

Question, why do a lot of places insist these are different fish and not the same name for 1 fish?

Most of the time when I say "Celestial Pearl Danio" they don't get it and point me towards some Leopard Danios. I've ordered them under the name Galaxy Rasbora.

>>
>>2274646
for a month yea, longer, no. is there also no power outlet down there? get a lamp hooked up or something man.... its not rocket science.
>>
>>2275109
Because they were originally assumed to be microrasboras and were dubbed galaxy rasboras, then a few months later were reclassified to danios and CPDs. Industry is just be lazy and it's not like the dumb wagey schmos know anything about it.
>>
>>2274984
I don't keep betta, but sorority tanks seem awesome. I'd go with that.

>>2275111

>>
>>2274984
Don't get anything under a 10 gallon for multiple bettas. Either go sorority (all female) or divide it between 2 males. Maybe you could get away with dividing a 5 with 2 males but eh
>>
>>2274957
I don't know if the different kinds will group together, but they usually need 4+ of their own kind
>>
Odd question, but out of everyone on /an/, you guys will probably know.

I keep goldfish, and I was bitching to someone about what a pain in the ass maintaining an aquarium is. He suggested a garden pond instead, since once you've done the initial work of building/installing it, aside from the occasional clean, it practically looks after itself.

Anyone have a garden pond and can give me some advice?
>>
>>2274356
Trash those cories and get new ones. Albino cories are so damn delicate anyway, doubtful they'll survive, so why endanger your shrimpies?
>>
>>2274957
similar species will school together. but... why would you? it's a sure thing they'll school together if they're the same species. if you want a variety, go for Corydoras aeneus. you can find them in bronze and albino everywhere, but they also come in green and black.
>>
>>2274615
Looks pretty good imo.
>>
>>2275245
I love them anon I will not trash them until they die. Do you have any advice on fishing out 4 small amano from a tank succesfully?
>>
>>2275245
...Corydoras aeneus is known to be a very hardy fish. if you can't take care of the easiest corys you should probably not get any others.
>>
>>2275250
maybe try putting in some blanched zucchini or something else they like?
>>
>>2274631
Get your parameters in check before you do anything else -_-
What did you put in the water? Any conditioner?

If you get fake plants make sure they are good quality and very SOFT, bettas can tear their fins on fake plants. Honestly it seems like you can easily grow some beginner plants. Please consider this instead of fake plants. Put some more substrate down so you can plant them or get something like anubias that you can tie to a bigger rock and your betta can lay on the nice open leaves.

That being said, you're still doing better than most first time betta owners just because of the fair size of that lil tank.
>>
>>2274631

I would start by removing the statue and rocks and place the betta in a back up mini tank while I set up his home

Then, I would:

>Go to pet store
>Get small rocky substrate for plant
>Ask for beginner plant
>Ask for a bottle of plant food or plant tablets
>Buy one plant (probably an Africa) and some plant food
>Get a small bag of sand in color of my choice

>Clean substrate in separate container (rocks will scratch the side of whatever it is you clean it in so choose wisely)
>Add cleaned substrate
>Safely add the plant to my tank burying the roots but not the base
>The plant should be stable enough to stand on its own without the incoming layer of sand
>Clean sand in separate container (sand will also scratch the side of whatever it is you clean it in, again, choose wisely)
>Add an inch layer of cleaned sand above rocky substrate
>Make sure the plant base doesn't get covered by sand too much - a little rock substrate being visible around the plant base probably isn't a bad thing

>Clean/heat/filter the water

Optional: Add a small pleasant number of smooth stones/pebbles to rest on the sand below the leaves of the plant (like the ones in your picture that are currently in the tank)

>Safely add betta back to his new upgraded home

That's more or less how I set up my freshwater planted aquariums
>>
>>2275253

>>
>>2275289
newbies should start with plants that don't need added fertilizer.

But I suppose your right I could return it and use something else.

Ok so they won't need a heater. The treatment will take about 3 weeks. How often do you think I should refresh their water? What's a good way to fish them out of the tank without tearing it apart?
>>
>>2275109
>Question, why do a lot of places insist these are different fish and not the same name for 1 fish?
They aren't pointing you towards leopard danios, they're pointing you towards the real pearl danio, danio albolineatus. It just happens to look pretty similar to a leopard danio.
>>
>>2274984
Personally I'd go with the latter, or do a sorority in a 29+ gallon with some other schooling fish.

>>2275189
I know that a lot of people do sorority tanks, but considering how easily they can go wrong and the fact that female bettas wouldn't ever be in a situation like that in the wild makes me hesitant to really recommend them, especially in small tanks like 10 gallons
>>
>>2275382
you can get a bucket for free/$1-3. buckets are a damn good thing to have around the house. I've also used storage bins and pickle jars.

do water changes like you usually would- but a little less. I'd do less than 1/3 of the water a week. shrimpies have a very low bioload so it should be fine.
>>
>>2275382
Considering a bucket is about $3. Amano shrimp like blanched vegetables like zucchini, cucumber, romaine, and spinach. If you put some in there weighed down with a fork, the shrimp should come to it within a couple minutes.

>>2275390
Could be either.

Got a free (filthy) 55 gallon with (broken) hoods, (slow) 30-60 gal filter, two lights (one's burnt), stand, a miniscule amount of gravel, fake plants, and 3 Bala sharks.

Free. Off Craigslist.
Pic related is my problem.
She's been running the tank fine like this (which is why I filled it, also it's getting late and I'm fucking sleepy), but how much time do I really have...

Bubbles everywhere and the sealant gets thinner as it goes down. These pics are all four corners. Hope it makes it til the morning. We'll see when I wake up.

Ok so it's only been a day, and my adult snail tank is already filthy-looking. The filter I had in there was just filter floss and pot scrubbies. I made a new one with floss, carbon, and clay pellets. Should I be seeing a difference soon provided I built it right?

probably just different suppliers. I would never judge a fish over a single purchase though.

>>2275486

>>2275531
someone just posted one here >>2275455

>>2275694
I think those snails might just be filthy. you need some kind of mechanical filtration for the snail poop to disappear, or just put dirt in and embrace the poops.
>>
>>2275694
Is there a pump attached to the filter?
>>
>>2275789
Yeah but it's an air pump. It's just an upside water bottle with media in it.

Also, is there anything Tupperware container can't do when compared to an aquarium? As long as it stick in a heater and a filter, does it really make much of a difference to whatever is inside? In this case snails?

An air powered filter isn't going to do much for mechanical filtration. It should still keep the water quality good for the snails, and you can test the ammonia/nitrite to confirm. If you do want better mechanical filtration, you can rig it with a cheap pump like pic.

What single, solitary fish could I have for a 25 gal?
I was thinking of any of these:
Red Bellied Piranha
Parrot Cichlid
Jack Dempsey Cichlid
Leopard Bushfish
South American Puffer (feeding may be a problem)

What other single species fish could I potentially put in this 25 gallon tank? I like the aesthetic of a single fish.
>>
>>2275850
If it's a plastic one, expect for it to eventually buckle from the weight of the water if it's a really big one. Not sure if it'd explode though, unless the plastic is really thin
>>
>>2275850
No issue there. They're just usually really small and not very clear. I've used 1gal pickle jars and 5qt ice cream buckets as isolation/qt tanks before, if you have some of those.

>>2275888
What are the dimensions of the tank? Of the ones you mentioned, I'd only suggest the bushfish, and that's only if the tank is 30 inches (75cm) long.
Other than that, most other cichlids or gourami that stay in the 4-5" range will work. Eg convict cichlid, paradise gourami, pearl gourami, etc. Some oddballs like African butterfly fish would also work.
Again, that's only if it a 30 inch tank. If it's 24 inches, you'll have to look at smaller fish.

My tank is 70cm long. Ironically you picked my favourite out of the fish I listed. Would the 5cm difference be a detriment to the fish? I don't want it to be uncomfortable.

>Just saw a guy ITT with a 25 gal with a piranha
This piranha will die in like a week, right?
>>
>>2275911
Just brace it
>>
>>2275939
Shouldn't be an issue. The only semi-commonly sold "25 gallon" tank in America is 60cm long, 30cm wide, and 55cm tall, which is basically crap. So that's why I brought that up.

Give the bushfish some areas of good cover in the back corners of the tank and a fairly open space in the front. They can be rather shy at first, but it'll get used to you after a while. It helps a bit if you stay at the tank for a few minutes after feeding.

>This piranha will die in like a week, right?
It takes longer than that for stress to have long-term effects. How well the piranha does will mostly depend on what/how much he feeds it and how good he is at changing out the water.

Now I can't stop thinking about it. Is breeding apple snails just a waste of time and money? Can I actually make a decent amount of money seeing as there doesn't seem to be any serious breeders around here? I can't find them anywhere except in pet stores.

I live one hour from the US border. I was thinking about ordering some really nice strains on aquabid to jump-start my operation.

Should I?
>>
>>2275954
Dwarf crayfish, bee shrimp, micro crabs, pygmy gourami, rocket killifish, pygmy cories, "shellies" (cichlids).
Do you actually have a tank, or are you just looking for ideas?

>>2275987
Make sure the snails don't crawl out.

>>2276068
Clean water and proper temps (78-82F) are going to be the best thing to help him recover. I wouldn't suggest euthanization unless he gets to the point where he's unable to swim or eat properly.
>>
>>2276090
I would put him down, but if you're invested in this fish then you should put the effort in. His chances aren't good though.

Take some of your water to a petstore like Petco asap, they test your water for free. Almost all fish illness is caused by dirty water.

I'm not convinced that's a fungal infection but it's really hard to tell from the pic. Aquarium salt is good to add, whatever it is.

>>2276098
Aren't apple snails considered kinda pleb? I've never kept them. Are they beneficial for tanks...?
>>
>>2276098
I doubt you'll make a significant amount of money unless you're breeding some interesting colors and selling them online.
Still, it's good to have hobbies.

>>2276102
They're more of a quirky pet than a utility.
They're fairly dirty (for inverts), not very good for eating algae, and they eat live plants.
>>
>>2276104
Yeah, I figured I would have heard more about them on forums if they were decent. Plus there's not much demand for things you can find at every fish shop.

I just picked up two rabbit snails and I'm having second thoughts since I'm not sure if they'll eat my plants or not. They seem alright so far, but I shouldn't have bought fancy snails when I already have dozens of them...

Another algae control related question.
I have green spot algae all over the glass in my tank. This past week I have increased the phosphate in my tank to 3.0-5.0, decreased the light to 6 hours, and am keeping CO2 at its max.
I also feed the minimum amount with little to no excess food. Any that drops to the bottom is taken by shrimp or eventually by cories.

Is there anything else I can do to help this go away? It is the only algae I see in my tank. I have a 30gallon rated HOB filter for the 20g and I think that is enough.
>>
>>2276174
At least you gave him a warriors death, rip fish
>>
>>2276373
-new tank?
-is the algae occurring everywhere on the glass, or mostly in one part?
-is sunlight hitting the tank?
-try reducing light wattage, or move the light farther away from the tank.
>>
So im kinda understanding this whole co2 thing but some questions. say i already have a paint ball co2 tank already, what else do i need? That part i dont understand.

And what should the amount of co2 tank be for a 60 gallon? Like a 5 pound tank, 25 ounces tank, or does it not matter only that some will need refilling sooner that others
>>
>>2276450
The only difference between tank sizes is how long they last and how much it cost to refill. For paintball injection you can either buy a kit or do a diy build http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/20-diy/115850-paintball-co2-injection-diy-setup-tons-photos.html#/topics/115850?_k=bps571

What a disaster. I'm the anon trying to breed apple/mystery snails. I guess I didn't put enough seeded media in one of the tanks because it turned to 2ppm of ammonia overnight. The snails seem to be fine but I want them to be in optimal condition. Would taking one sponge from an aquaclear ruin my cycle in a 2 month old tank?
>>
>>2276588
The black substrate in that picture looks like ADA Aquasoil or Fluval Stratum, but you could also use EcoComplete, Fluorite, or organic potting soil. ADA or potting soil will give you the most growth, but the soil will also require a bit more setup and more work for the first several weeks.
In that pic it looks like they put plant substrate only in certain parts of the tank (where the carpeting and background plants are) and used cheap sand for the front area. If you went that route you can buy whatever sized bag of substrate you want and just plan around the planting are. Anything growing on wood isn't going to care what kind of substrate you're using (nor will floating plants).

For lights you can use a cheap T8 or T12 shop lamp hung from the ceiling. All of the plants in that picture are have modest light requirements anyway.

Getting a CO2 system will be the biggest expense in recreating that tank, but if you stick with extremely low maintenance plants (crypts for carpet, wisteria for background, anubias, java fern, etc.), you could have a planted tank like that without special substrate or CO2, just a $4 bag of all-purpose sand and a $20 shop light

Use a drop checker.

>Also do bubbler effect c02?
Don't use a bubble and pressurized CO2 together. The surface agitation of the bubbler will cause dissolved CO2 in the water to evaporate until the concentration is equal to the ambient air.

Cute.

Is there any disadvantage to using pot scrubbies? It seems too good to be true. I just jammed all available space in my filters with them.
>>
>>2276846
>I have a bubble counter is a drop checker different
Yes. A drop checker contains a small amount of fluid and an indicator. The indicator causes the fluid to change color (green, blue, yellow) depending on the CO2 concentration being too high, too low, or "just right."

>how much c02 is too much
35-50ppm, depending on who you ask.

There are too many factors to give you a definitive number of bubbles per second for ideal levels, but if you can measure the pH and kH you can get something of a ballpark using tables like www.barrreport.com/forum/barr-report/co2-enrichment/11862-co2-ph-kh-table.

Tank has been around for several months.
On all parts of the glass. Heavier towards the bottom but that may just because I cant reach as well that far

I have heard cycling the light to on/off twice a day. Or is that a hoax?
>>
>>2277138
it's to be expected in a new tank- it should be gone within a few months. almost everyone gets it.

a siesta (cycling on and off) will only help if you're having CO2 problems. leaving the lights off at least 3 hours will allow CO2 to build back up, so you might try it. are you using an air stone or anything like that? I don't know too much about adding in CO2 since I have a natural planted tank, but the siesta will only be useful if there isn't the right amount of CO2 in your water already.

the problem is almost definitely too much light. try to get your light further away from your tank. adding more plants helps too.

>it's a tedious experience and not very rewarding

Does this have to do with the separating and individual maintenance of offspring? I bred a pair once before but didn't get to that stage, the dozen or so fry were past 1/2" in a 10g until I went away for a month and I lost most of my fish when the housekeeper didn't clean my tanks like we'd arranged.

As far as not very rewarding, I figured if I got a proper fancy pair I might get a handful of ~$15-25 model fish and sell the rest cheap to LFS, maybe take back a couple hundred bucks if I got a high survival rate. Is this unrealistic?
>>
What /aq/ thought on neon glowing fish? I was thinking of adding some to a community tank im planning but not sure what there like

You'd have a higher survival rate with a 20 gallon for breeding, you should also cup them when they can start eating solid food.

The worst thing about GloFish is the company that makes them and the fact that they'll try to legally prohibit you from breeding your own fish.
Other than that, basically what >>2277274 said. They're expensive and a lot of the colors are rather garish (especially with the blue lights), but some, like the blue or orange danios, look pretty nice under regular lighting.
The whole "Glo" brand thing is really gimmicky and capitalist, but it isn't harmful to the fish at all.

They were developed as an indication system for pollutants in the water. Different colors would fluoresce brighter with higher levels of particular pollutants in the water.
AFAIK that never actually took off the ground (why wouldn't you just make a custom drop checker?), so they sold out to Tetra and marketed them as pets instead.

I have a 15 gallon, heavily planted tank with 6 neon tetras and a plakat betta in it. I recently added 20 cherry shrimp and a dwarf crayfish to the tank, drip acclimated them, the tank was well cycled, etc. This was about 4 days ago. I've been seeing less and less shrimp, and now I can barely find one. There's a big pile of rocks in the middle that has moss stuck in the cracks. Did my betta really decimate 20 shrimps in 3-4 days? Or is it possible they're all just hiding all the time?

I've got a couple of questions, /aq/, hoping you can answer them. I'm getting ready for a betta (this is my first time setting up an aquarium by myself), and I'm curious - do you put the water conditioner in before adding the water itself to the tank, or after? Also, the tank I bought came with one of those free testing bottles, so are Petsmart's analyses pretty reliable or should I just get a testing kit and do it myself?
>>
>>2278083
*I should probably clarify that I meant "do you put the water conditioner IN THE WATER before or after it's in the tank." I know these are probably dumb questions, but I want to make sure I do this right so the guy has a good home right from day one.

So I just got this little guy for my 25 gallon.
I'm planning to upgrade to a 50-55g in a few months' time, will he be alright in this for now, though?
Also, what sort of tankmates will my Red parrot blood cichlid get along with? Most sites give conflicting answers.
>>
>>2278083
>>2278092
Put the water in the tank, then treat it.
>>
>>2278125
Parrot cichlids are hard to suggest tank mates for as some are the friendly fish ever and others will take a chunk out of you, usually you wanna house them with tough fish like silver dollars or corys, anything that can take a bite basically.

Long story short I had to take in all these fish today (excluding the pictus, he is a long term resident). The transition went smoothly, except I can not find the fucking betta. I don't know if it's because my tank is just awful for bettas or maybe because I always get them second hand, I just happen to always get them near death. But just about every betta I put in here, they fucking disappear within a few months. Longest betta I ever had in there only lasted a year until he was never to be seen again, but this is the fastest disappearing act I've had yet. I've looked all around the tank, on the lid, in the filter, can't find the fucker. I can't find the loach either but I expected to never see him again when I put him in there

Not sure of it's relevant but the betta was really pale in his last habitat, and just acclimating him with his new home he began to regain some color. Just a few minutes free in the tank he was a full nice maroonish color instead of his blush and white but he didn't look agitated, he just swam to a leaf and sat there. I've never seen a change in color that quick unless they were mad, but he didn't seem upset, all of the bright tank mates he had been living with for months, and I did the change very slowly since the parameters between the two tanks were pretty different (their tank was choked with ammonia, before this move I tested my tank with 0.0ppm)

Is there any hope for this betta? Any ideas what could have happened?
>>
>>2278152
Thanks for the advice. I got him from a tiny, cramped tank at a store because they thought putting a jack dempsey and a few rams in a 15 gallon with him would be a great "cichlid tank".

He seems alot more active and happier swimming and hiding in rocks and driftwood in this 25 gallon. The same pet store was pretty reluctant to sell him because of the size of the tank.
Would he be fine for the maximum of a year or so in here? He is currently on his own, and around 3-5 inches.
>>
>>2278028

If he developed a taste for shrimp after the first couple he may have started actively hunting them down.

Shrimp do like to hide sometimes, though, especially if there are "big scary predators" in the tank. You can move one of the rocks a bit and see if there are any hiding in there.

>>2278028
Dwarf crays are like 95% shrimp safe.
>>
>>2278083
>>2278092
For the initial setup of the tank, it doesn't matter either way.
For water changes, it's better if you treat the water separately, then aerate it (I just dump it back and forth between a couple of buckets) before putting it into the tank. This is mainly to prevent chlorine from coming into contact with the filter media and substrate, which could kill off some of your beneficial bacteria. It really isn't a big risk to do it the other way, but it's an unnecessary one.

PetSmart uses Tetra strip tests. They're pretty bad for accuracy, but you can use them as a binary for ammonia and nitrite in the water. The nitrate and pH tests are a lot better.
If you'd like your own test kit, the API Freshwater Master Test Kit is the tried and true favorite for hobbyists.

I will suggest avoiding bettas with excessive finnage like the one in your picture. The multiple branches in the fins means the bones are extremely brittle and inevitably break, leading to potentially lethal infections. Large fins are also incredibly cumbersome in the water and make it difficult for the fish to swim (imagine trying to swim in a wedding dress).
>>
>>2278217
I'm hoping a few are just hiding. there's tons of cracks in there. I thought if I added 20 at once there'd be a chance some would survive. I see one or two on a leaf if I look really hard... My betta is kind of a dick though.

I guess it's kind of a failed experiment.

>>2278187
the water chemistry is pretty good, so I don't think it's likely they climbed out.

semi new aquarium fag here. i have white water stains inside the top part of my tank. do i take new razor blades and scrape that bitch? How do i clean white minerals on filter exterior?
>>
>>2278278
scraping is effective but often scratches the glass.

cleaning with vinegar works but takes a while. Cleaning with dilute hydrochloric or muriatic is faster but more dangerous. You can also use a sulpheric based product for cleaning lime deposits. Something like CLR.

don't use chemicals on a tank that's got livestock in it obviously. Also the best way to avoid these deposits in the future is to fill the tank all the way full with water and keep it that way.

Only way you're going to fuck up glass with a razor blade is if you're doing something wrong. HCl is a bit easier and faster if the tank is empty, though.

>>2278356
I don't think it's advisable to soak active carbon in bleach, so you're probably going to limit your ability to recharge the Purigen.
>>
>>2278635
>Only way you're going to fuck up glass with a razor blade is if you're doing something wrong.
scraping lime deposits is doing something wrong.

what happens is the hard deposit nicks the blade and then the tiny dents in the blade scratch the glass. It's about as good an idea as using steel wool or scouring powder. Pretty much guaranteed to scratch glass.

Rainbowsharks are aggressive with their own species. So why are they so social with other species? I've had three now. First one liked to sit on top of the kuhli loach swarm and hide with them. Second liked to follow my pleco around and would just hang near her as often as possible. This one (baby) is shoaling with the tetras.

Do I just have weird luck, or is this common for rainbows?

So it has been a while since I've kept fish, I had a blue spot sunfish like a year ago and Betta's before that. But for Christmas this year I wanted to get my mom something special, so I got my old tank and bought some small fish. Now the fish in it are all super easy to care for and represent people in are family. I have a Cory cat, dwarf gourami, orange Platy, and a phantom tetra. However the last fish is an issue. That last fish being a scarlet badis, when my petco got three in I knew I just had to have one bc fuck they're cool. The fish have all been acclimated to the tank and it's doing alright, (although I need to rescape with better hiding spots and remove some rocks bc I forgot about the Cory while scaping. Anyways it hasn't been long but all the fish are starting to eat. The Cory cat loves his algae wafers and the rest of the fish are happily eating some slow sinking pellets (might change to floating bc it confuses the gourami). I got dried bloodworms for the badis but it hasn't been eating, it really doesn't even seem to care about them, I know their picky but I didn't think that picky. Anybody ever kept badis? Do you think maybe just give it time or
Maybe it's bc he doesn't have a great hiding spot yet? I don't know because other than him the tank is doing great.

Don't get pool filter sand, it's silica sand and the opposite of rounded. The sharp silica granules will wear down the cories' barbels and generally be worse than any gravel. Playsand washes clean if you rinse it properly, it's just that it takes an entire evening to rinse a 44lbs bag of it. But once you're done, you're done.

You need to rinse the sand until the water comes out clear. There are instructions on the back of that bag that'll make it easier. Put a sponge on the intake of the filter to protect it from sucking up any residual dust.
20 lbs is only going to give you about 1 inch of depth in a 20 long. Are you using EcoComplete? You can gently lay the sand on top of the gravel using a cup and brush it off of the plant leaves and other decor afterwards. That'll allow the plants to continue receiving the benefits of the plant substrate as well.
CaribSea sand is pretty expensive and you can get the same effect from pool filter or play sand, but like the other anon said, it takes hours to rinse the stuff clean.

>>2280397
Play sand is also silica sand, and pool filter sand is plenty smooth. The pores in the sand grains meant to catch dust are far too small to cause any damage to the cories. Pretty much the only difference between the two is that pool filter sand has been sifted and has more uniformly sized grains.

Welp overnight I am missing like 30% of my fish. One cory is dead, one cory and 2 tetras are MIA. The good news is my betta is active and has regained a ton of color, but it looks like his fins have been severely fucked in his last home. I turned off the bubbler thinking it would cause too much current for my smaller fish but I think maybe they aren't getting enough oxygen? I'm not seeing anyone gulp air from the top, the only guy that stays near the top is the guppy and from what I heard he always had. I tested the water, everything looked fine except the water was a bit on the hard side. Ammonia level still looks nonexistent. Everyone, save the paleness of the ragged betta, looks healthy; no parasites or disease as far as I can tell.. I can't figure out what killed off a chunk of my tank in one night.

Ill post betta next
>>

With a tank that size it's best to drain it and put the plants in a temp container, and put the filter media in a container with tank water. When you get to your new place fill the tank up and treat it before putting the filter back on, you could also keep your cycle if you're willing to store the substrate out of the tank to.

I think that guy still looks better than my poor dude. Take solace in that.

I hope this isn't bait, but the betta needs to be in a 5 gallon aquarium at the least. The water is also gross because it's growing a nice protein layer on the top. Moving the betta to a different, filtered tank with frequent water changes will make the biggest difference

Buy a tank with a fucking filter (gentle). It's not hard.

If you can't pay to take care of these animals correctly do not buy them.

OK well I already did it last night, the tank got foggy but started to clear up, imbhoing when I get home from work it will look clearer.

good stuff, it's nice and soft so it won't cause your cories any problem.

How long does it take to properly seed a piece of media in an established tank? Say if I took a piece and jammed it in an established filter?

Haven't posted in a while. Got a puppy so have been busy with that, just doing fast water changes and feeding. Am at that weird point where the plants have grown out nicely but are overgrown and I don't want to fuck up when I trim. That fucking nerite snail keeps moving around my rocks and messing up my hardscape so I'll probably brick him soon.

Will probably wait a few more weeks and replant the trimmings in a new aquarium.

Also, how in God's name do I keep this Monte Carlo rooted? It came back from the melt, but it all gets uprooted everyday.

That looks pretty good. Maybe get some small bushy plants for the left side. Move the longer plants to the background. And get a different stencil for the back of the aquarium. A black or brown.
Other than that, try to add some depth and dimension by having slopes with your substrate. Make one side taller than the other, or have it dip in the middle. Or at the very least, having the substrate get higher the further back it goes. Shallow in front, deep in back.

I scrubbed some rocks that were covered in BGA with 30% hydrogen peroxide now I'm wondering if they're safe to put back in the tank

I'm reading that h2o2 evaporates/ neutralizes in a day or two when exposed to air, but in water it takes much longer? I thought once it stopped fizzing it was done

These rocks have been rinsed repeatedly but of course rocks are porous...
I hate trying to find information in this hobby. Everything you read is conflicting with something else out there

No, just don't take the substrate out and let the water be treated for like an hour or two before putting the filter back on. You'll keep some of the beneficial bacteria and can put your fish back in. Just gotta do more water changes than normal.

Just find a way to kill it. If they get a new one kill it also. They'll eventually stop.
