I have some ornamental cymbidiums (among other orchids) and it appears one of the flowers has become fertilised. I'm googling the wrong terms so my search isn't yielding much. I've found how to grow the orchids from see but not how to tell when to remove the pod/capsule. I've normally removed the flower stems before this point but I left them outside all winter and spring while I'm renovating and let the flowers wilt off in time so haven't experienced this before.
How do I tell when it is 'ripe' enough to harvest the seeds?
Pic related, it's the only flower stem which isn't drying up. The rest of the flowers were knocked off by a builder
I thought orchids were a strictly inside flower.

So where do they live in the wild then?

the pods will dry out and eventually crack open releasing the dust like seeds. try bagging the pods with a small paper bag or ziploc or something. as far as actually getting them to grow, are you going to do TC?

It depends on your plant. If you've got some fucked up artificial hybrid, the ovaries will grow at first but then they will suddenly die due to the fact that the plant's gametes are totally fucked. In the off chance that the plant is viable the pods will swell and look like they are about to explode. Put a container beneath them to catch the seeds and then treat them with a sterilizing agent. After that, hope your seeds are indeed viable and sow them.

Also, 99% of commonly available orchids are fucked up hybrid "ornamental" orchids, just an fyi

This one had either a white flower or a green flower so there's a chance it wasn't completely fucked haha. I'll post again if the seeds are viable otherwise I'll let it grow and dry out and put a bag around it and catch the seeds and try germinate them

so how do you plan on getting them to grow?
orchids are stupid hard to grow from seed
