It's not irrational, it actually stems from an archaic fear for the deadly spiders. It's coded into your body through palengenisis. It's behaviourism and anthropological biology.
>>
>>2267682
>it actually stems from an archaic fear for the deadly spiders
Which deadly spiders? I keep hearing this meme, but only Brazil and Australia has actual deadly spiders. "Deadly" spiders in other countries rarely cause any human deaths at all.

I think you fell for the good ol' "palaeolithic man constantly had to fight for his life while everything was trying to kill him" meme.

I remember a study done with babies.

Babies were in a room with an animal and an adult. In both cases, the adult reacts fearfully to the animal. In the ones with dogs/cats, the babies did not react fearfully even after the adult did, and remained eager to approach and play with the animal. In the ones with snakes/spiders, the babies reacted fearfully as soon as they saw the adults reacting fearfully. I don't believe they did this with any other wild animals, but I'm not certain.

This study suggests that there is either a predisposition towards fear if an adult shows fear with regards to spiders and snakes, or that there is a predisposition to liking dogs/cats and other domestic animals. Since babies also innately know the body language of dogs, it's entirely possible that we have a bias towards them over other animals, instead of against spiders/snakes. But there wasn't enough data to determine that.
>>
>>2268077
It is my opinion that people aren't instictually afraid of spiders..rather they're afraid of/disgusted by insects and related things in general. Which has many evolutionary benefits.

After walking through the fields in summer, I suddenly felt something scratching my neck. It was a giant garden spider, the scratching was its claws digging into my skin as it crawled up to my face. I panicked a bit to say the least.
>>
>>2268077
Laxosceles, Steatoda and Latrodectus spiders, can give you a very nasty bite and you'll have a bad time, they are pretty much everywhere, and the potency of the venom varies between subspecies.

I collect jumping spiders and I been biten often just like OP did, some venoms have different effects than others but all are noticeable.

Nothing dangerous or even painful, but I understand if you don't want to be biten.

I'm not a hardass like bugguy that handles his tarantulas and it's not afraid of anything, but I agree with him in the fact that bite reports tend to be exagerated.

They have fangs, and can't pierce much skin, but you can still feel a subtle numbing, at first I wasn't sure but the same spider can bite you several times, and you'll have the same numbing in several places.

As I said it's so subtle that if you aren't biten multiple times you don't notice it, I handle them constanly and even do a trick where I make one of them jump from finger to finger, it's really cool.

They bite like dogs or cats bite, as some kind of warning, if you aren't handling them correctly.

I use jars, the biggest I can find, cause a terrarium it's too big and you can't handle them correctly, and they are just going to hide and get lost.

I'm currently at four different species, all localy collected, two of the ones that never bite me before, bite me just know and I'm feeling funny but it doesn't hurt so I'll be ok.

I feed them flies and moths, small ones, one every 2 or three days, I keep females separated of males, you can usually recognize males cause they are more colorful and smaller than females, I setup the enclosures with hard to rot branches, and I clean them first to prevent the formation of fungus, they don't drink much water, but I give them one or two drops a week, the problem inside the enclosure it's moist, so you have to be careful.

I handle them just fine and I play with them, smart as hell they are, they can hide from you, and they make permanent housing so take care of not dismantling the webs, they don't make traditional webs for hunting, instead they make tent like webs to sleep.

Obviously the show stoppers are the mating dances, they'll do it if they have the opportunity, besides the dance they also make percussion with the abdomens, I have one male dancing in my finger and I noticed it.

They can live with each other but introduce them first and see how they react, they can live with other bugs like ladybugs and weevils, cause they can't pierce their armor, in case you don't want them to be alone.

In case that they escape, leave the enclosure open and wait for them, as I say their housing it's permanent.

Spiders we scoff at today were a lot fucking deadlier10-20 thousand years ago. Get bit by a venomous spider today you can go to a hospital for anti venom, antibiotic, and anti nausea meds. Get bit by venomous spider back in the Stone Age and you can die from exposure due to weakened immune system, infection, or get hunted down by a predator. Mankind has not yet evolved out of its primitive instincts. We've only had electricity for about 175 years or so

Thats still bullshit.
Spider bites were practically as harmless then as they are now.
Spider bites requiring any sort of medical attention are extremely rare, and even then are suually the result of unrelated infection or allergies.

I know that this is just classic 4chan banter.

But my dendryphantes niveornatus just died.

Nobody had ever seen one since 1936 and I was unable to find a female for him.

I have him for a few months he was a really nice tiny spider, and this morning he was slowly dying, so I took him out of his enclousure and let him breath fresh air, then I put him on a leaf so he could peacefully die in freedom

He was the only live specimen of his species, as far we know and now he's no more.

So your little insensitivity doesn't sits well with me today.

Even some of the venomous ones are ok to own, I have a real big bunch of Brown Widows (Latrodectus Geometricus) all over my house. They really like clean places for some reason (they refused to build webs in the dusty garage and instead chose the kitchen and living room).
They're surprisingly chill, never leave their web corner, and can be moved easily. I've moved a bunch with just a paper and a stick and they never even tried to climb onto my hand, they curl into balls and stay that way until I'm done.

I really like brown widows because they take up the territory of the black widow, and they're vicious lil insect killers. I often find winged termites in their webs and my home remains termite free thanks to them.

>get back from a rainy, shitty weekend of camping with my parents (I am 8)
>throw my sleeping bag on a couch in my room
>see a giant, white spider crawl out of my sleeping bag
>it's huge, bigger than a golf ball
>call my dad, he is amazed, kills it with a stick
>I can hear that sucker crunch from across the room
>a mess of twitching limbs and guts all over my sleeping bag
>can't sleep thinking that thing was inside my bag all weekend with me
I live in Missouri and have never seen anything like it. Was it albino maybe? I want to ask my dad if he remembers it, but he's 67 and senile now...

>Was it albino maybe?

That's not a thing.

Some huntsman spiders can range from very pale grey to practically white so assuming it wasn't just your kid brain embellishing things that was probably what you saw.

This. I've been slowly getting over my fear, but it's hard when it's an irrational feeling. Shit, I love the little jumping spiders these days, but the rest of those fucks can go. I know they're mostly harmless, I get how important they are to the ecosystem, but god damn do they creep me out something fierce.

Also, fuck little brown spiders that run across my pillow when I'm trying to read. Showboating assholes.
