Why did bunnies become pets while hares usually stay in the wild?

Less high strung and/or just happened to be the ones who got domesticated. With domestic rabbits, there is basically no need for domestic hares.

Probably for food at first, then became pets. Pretty much all early animals that were domesticated were done for beneficial reasons, dogs to protect farms and family, to help with hunting, cats to get rid of small pests, etc. Only in the past few hundred years were animals domesticated just to be pets.
