How bad is a horse bite if it breaks the skin in terms of biological risk? I know if a cat ever bites you then you might as well start planning your funeral.
>>
>>2264222

They do have a bunch of bacteria in their mouths, so theoretically you could get sick, though it's pretty rare.

Your biggest issue is that they can bite a lot harder than people give them credit for, including reports of them taking off fingers.

Cat bites aren't dangerous to most people. Those at risk are usually immunocompromised in some way.

I'm not sure if horse bites break skin in the same way. With a cat, you have a whole lot of very sharp pointed carnivore teeth. While I would agree with that other anon that a horse could take off a finger, they're better at leaving huge and extremely painful bruises than necessarily breaking skin. I've seen some pretty gnarly bites on people's upper arms and thighs though.

We have a mini that we got from a rescue farm. I might have been physically abused or neglected, I don't know but it always runs away from humans. Now it's been a few months since then and I've only managed to be able to pet her twice and both circumstances was me forcing her into a corner to hold her while she was getting her shots and her hooves done. Nowadays she's a bit more calm around us, maybe me specifically cause I like to try and feed her and get close to her and she comes real close to me but always flinches away if I try to move in to pet. How can I get her to fully adjust to us? Unrelated, I also have a colt that fucking loves attention and we managed to calm him down and get him to accept the halter by being the alpha male and etc.
>>
>>2265086
How long you had her now?
>>
>>2265110
I read it wrong. If she's still skittish after 16 months she might just always be like that.
>>
>>2265111
>>2265110
Less than half a year but in this short time she's gone from staying at least 15ft away from us to curiously sniffing my hands this morning. Is there hope that she'll come to accept us and get close and let us pet her?
>>
>>2265119
I've known some horses that just never liked being pet. They still stand close but they flick their heads away if you jab at their face any. Let her get close without touching her for a while I reckon.

Most horses don't like getting touched on their face.

All the ones I've met like getting their belly scratched though.
>>
>>2265146
The belly is a very sensitive area. I would not try and touch her there until she warms up to you.
>>
>>2265146
The horses I've met and the colt I own love getting the snout pet, I just went outside and he ran to me to get his face pet.
>>
So I was grooming a horse for the first time the other day, and every once in awhile she would turn her head back towards me and kinda nudge me.
Was she trying to tell me she liked getting scratched in that spot? Or was it more like, hey, fuck off?
>>
>>2265174
Just a nudge? I'd bet on that being positive. If she didn't like she'd probably attempt either to bite or move away.

I patted my first horses today and was just wondering what some of their body language ment.
1st. What does it mean if they stomp one of their front feet?
2nd. What does it mean if they stomp one of their back feet? Do they mean the same thing?
3rd. What does it mean if they try to nurse you, as in try to wrap their neck around yours?
4th. What does it mean I'd they touch their head to yours?
5th. What does it mean when they neigh?
And last but not least 6th. What does it mean if they are rubbing up against something close to you? One of them was rubbing their heads on a post and I thought they wanted scratches and another was rubbing their behind on a tree.
>>
>>2268138
>What does it mean if they try to nurse you

I thought you were going to say a horse tried to get you to drink their milk. That's much different.

>>
>>2268176
I would have thought that was a plush had it not moved it's head
>>
>>2268138
>1st. What does it mean if they stomp one of their front feet?
I find they often do this if their legs are being bothered by flies. Sometimes they do it to get attention. If their ears weren't back, it's unlikely they did it in anger.

>2nd. What does it mean if they stomp one of their back feet? Do they mean the same thing?
Usually the same, I would say. Back legs are more likely to be the ones used in anger for kicking, but if their ears aren't back they are probably shooing flies.

>3rd. What does it mean if they try to nurse you, as in try to wrap their neck around yours?
Some like the close physical touching, it may be a form of cuddling. But some of them, especially colts or stallions, may do it as a form of showing dominance.

>4th. What does it mean I'd they touch their head to yours?
They're probably just chilling and relaxed with you.

>5th. What does it mean when they neigh?
Neighing is usually a greeting or an expression of excitement. A horse that recognizes someone or another horse that it likes or wants to meet it will whinny loudly. Sometimes they just do it to demand food from someone who it knows often gives it to them.

>And last but not least 6th. What does it mean if they are rubbing up against something close to you? One of them was rubbing their heads on a post and I thought they wanted scratches and another was rubbing their behind on a tree.

If they rub against something it's usually just for scratching. Watching for this and scratching the area they were trying to get is a great way to bond with them. Make sure you talk to them first and be very careful before touching them though, especially if it is on their backside. Go to their front first, let them sniff you, and run your hand down their body so they can detect where you are, and watch their ears don't go back, indicating displeasure.

A lot of them love scratches anywhere, but good spots are around the base of the tail, on their withers and neck etc.

Some other anon will have to answer you; I'm not much of a rider.

However, the personality of the horse can have very little to do with their rideability if they are untrained or if you are inexperienced.

The horse in my picture is very much enjoying the scratch I am giving her, but she is unbroken and has no training aside from leading and tying up and some personal care (inspecting/doing her hooves, grooming etc).

She's quiet and intelligent and I love her, but if I tried to ride her she'd go crazy no doubt :)

So it depends on the horse. In any case, unless you know the horse and you're sure it matches your level of experience, do not try to ride them. Last time I rode was on a very lazy, quiet Clydesdale cross with the owner coaching us both. The mare knew me and liked me also, so it was good.

I think this is the right thread. I'd rather not make a whole thread for this.

Okay my boyfriend lives 30 miles away out in Amish and Mennonite country. This means it's quite common to see horses, buggies, and horse-drawn carriages. I know they treat the horses like tools. It always makes me feel bad to see them being pushed to their physical limits, on terrain that's hard on their hooves (horses weren't evolved to canter continuously on asphalt). Some horses are even foaming at the mouth and breathing through their mouth heavily. Not only that, but when the people need to shop, they just park their horse at a hitching post or something, and they don't give the horse food or water or a nosebag. Like they go from 60 to 0 in one second with no cool down for the animal. Often times the hitching post is just a circular iron tie against the wall, where the horses are forced to stand in piles of their own shit, as well as shit from the horses that stood there before them.

Like what the fuck guys? Why are these guys still living in the past and treating their beasts of burden like shit? What can I do besides look away? Furthermore, how can I help, at all?

I really don't know. But I know Amish and Mennonite don't have access to some things like others do. I bet they don't have access to the Internet.

Yeah I know a mare who bangs the door of her stable with the front of her hoof when you are coming with hay.

And when I was a kid my mum had an old horse who would put his leg through the wires of his fence and twang them, because he knew she'd drop whatever she was doing and make him stop in case he got caught, but giving him attention in the process.

My mum's best friend has a kitchen that is adjacent to the paddock her horses are in.

So every morning her horse pokes his head in the window and wants attention/snacks.

It's kinda a dream of mine.

When we were kids and leading our horses we'd often lead them half inside the house just to stir everyone up. The horses were willing as there was always bread or apples in it for them.

I would like to have a small horse for a pet.
Is there a breed that is small enough that you can keep it indoors and smart enough that you can train it to go outside for poops and pees?

How often do you need to bathe these things so they don't smell bad?

Is there a difference in temperament between genders? If so what should I get?
>>
>Watch horse eating apple vids on youtube

Can horses be trained to tolerate getting their teeth brushed?
>>
>>2276296
http://www.horsechannel.com/horse-health/healthy-horse-teeth.aspx

>Unlike humans and dogs, whose teeth are covered with shiny white enamel, a horse has an outer layer of cementum. Cementum is a porous, yellowish material that readily absorbs pigment from feed materials.

You can brush you horse's teeth, but it is also only superficial since horse's saliva is apparently alkaline and kills bacteria. That was a pretty interesting question, thanks.
>>
>>2276294
>Is there a breed that is small enough that you can keep it indoors

No. If you keep a horse indoors, no matter how small it will have a really bad life. You need at least a half acre of pasture for even a tiny horse.

>>
>>2276472
>until it wants to go to bed

Horses don't go to bed as such. They sleep under three hours a day, in small quantities, mostly while on their feet. You can't train a horse to curl up in a dog bed and sleep through the night, it will still be active and will still need to piss and shit regardless of whether it's indoors or not.

You can definitely keep miniature horses as pets and they don't need a large field, but they are still outdoor grazing animals and they'll be happiest and healthiest if you keep at least two and they can spend most of their time outdoors with access to a suitable shelter.
>>
>>2277026
Can I train said mini horse to be socially dependent on other animals? Say, a goat like one guy said or maybe a doggo or kitter?
>>
>>2277035
First off, why would you want to do that?

Secondly, yes. Horses are very social animals, so if the only interaction he gets is from a goat, then yes he'll be more socially dependent on that goat. I wouldn't suggest having a horse without at least one other companion horse though.
>>
>>2277035
Other livestock that live in similar conditions sure. Know one lady on youtube with great danes keeps a pony with them. But they key with all of them is outdoorsiness and a sort of herd environment.

>>
>>2277054

Yes, absolutely, but it depends how good your grazing is and what you intend to do with the horse. Horses kept on grass spend about three-quarters of the day grazing, so they need constant access, you can't just let them out for a meal three times a day. You also need enough land that you can rotate them through it, otherwise the pasture will become exhausted or trampled to mud. It also depends where you live and what kind of horse you have - some breeds don't cope well with the cold and need extra feed, ponies can thrive on grass year-round, but can also develop laminitis and die if your grazing is too lush. You're also not going to win any competitions on a grass-powered horse, and you'd need to be prepared to buy in hay in winter if needed.

But yeah, totally doable - if you've got enough land and you keep hardy horses that are good keepers and in light work, an all-grass or grass-and-hay diet is associated with fewer health issues than grains. It's just that in practice, most people don't actually have enough grazing for a horse to live solely on.

First, what breed of doggo best gets along with the horse for the sake of both of them not being lonely. Next, how do I make them get along?
>>
Grew up on a ranch, raising, training, working, riding horses.

For anybody considering getting one, consider the following

1) Horses are expensive as fuck. The land, feed, and equipment you need is very pricey.

2) They are resource hungry pets. They need a lot of pasture land to graze. They need fresh specially prepared hay and feed on top of that (even small amounts of mold will literally kill them). When not running wild, they need farrier services and veterinary care. Not to mention, these are social herd animals designed to run, so they need plenty of daily exercise and interaction.

3) Horses take a lot of time and effort to train. It is a process that can take months or years, depending on what you want to do with the horse, and it never ends. You have to work with the horse for the rest of its life to keep it trained. Riding and working with horses has a pretty steep learning curve as well - as a horse owner, be prepared to put a huge amount of time and effort into learning how to work with horses.

4) Horses are big. We're talking a 1000 - 2000 lb animal. That's a lot of weight and strength to deal with. If a pissed off horse decides to roll on you, or squish you against a fence, it is going to do some damage.

5) Horses are sensitive, intelligent animals. They get upset easily, and if they aren't treated right or if they are neglected, they become miserable and difficult to work with.

6) They shit. A lot. Welcome to shoveling wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow of shit daily for the entirety of that horses' 20 + year lifespan.

If you really love horses and are set on having on someday, I recommend putting in a lot of time at a local stable, spend some months or years learning how to ride and care for them, and volunteering to do some of the dirty work to really get an understanding of what you are signing up for.

>>2277681
>And your dog rolling in those piles of horse shit.
that's not all they do
>>
>>2277682

No. It is an involuntary process for horses. They can't "hold it" like humans or predatory animals can.

They just shit when their bodies are ready to shit.

Also, even miniature horses produce huge piles of poop, because of all the fiber and vegetable matter.

Thanks, that is very helpful. I don't think I'll ever be ready to have a horse, but if I got one, I think I'd pay people to take care of it. There are some horses "hotels" around here, you pay them and they feed, exercise, etc your horse.
>>
>>2277686

Yeah, that is really the best option. If you can afford to keep the horse in a good stable, and have someone else groom and clean up after it.

You will still need to visit the horse frequently, at least a couple times a week, to keep them happy. They like interaction with their owners.

I don't mean to dissuade anyone. Honestly, I'd love to see more people learning to ride and keeping horses. It is a dying art. I just want people to know what they are getting into.
>>
If they made it mandatory to marry your horse would it even be worth the tax breaks?
>>
>>2277676
You really don't know what you're getting yourself into, anon. But you heard it here first, you are not going to enjoy a mini horse, or a horse at all, and they will not enjoy you.

If you want to waste money on a terrible experience for all involved, then go for it.
>>
>>2277677
Good advice. I will probably end up owning a few on day, but not until I'm financially sound, which will be a few years down the line.

I don't know much about horses, yet, but I started volunteering at a horse rescue, and I really, really enjoy the work and I love being around the animals. It may sound weird, like, who wants to muck out stalls for half of their day, but I somehow enjoy it.
>>
>>2277655
Yes.
>>
>>2277676
Then you're a total cunt and I hope one of your neighbors calls animal control on you sooner rather than later. Putting your own selfish desires above the health of an animal makes you the absolute worst sort of person and I can only hope you live in a civilized country so you'll be punished for being such a dumb cunt and if you live in a shitty 3rd world shithole I can only hope some easily curable disease takes your life before you make the misinformed decision to involve an innocent equine in the shitshow you call your life.
>>
>>2277676
Here's the thing - the best possible advice is you not doing what you're planning on doing. Realise different species have certain behaviours you cannot control and needs that must be met for their well being (and also yours). Both physical and psychological. If you cannot understand this then it's your own fucking prerogative, but you'll deserve no sympathy from anyone when things inevitably turn for the worst. I absolutely hope you don't follow through with it and, if you do, that some sort of animal protection service takes the mini horse away from you and fines you. At the very least.
>>
>>2277676
Play in traffic. Busy traffic. That's my advice you sack of shit.
>>
>>2277738
>>2277742
Why do you have to be so agressive? I worked for five years as a long shore crane operator and if my retirement checks says that I can afford a mini horse and have some property in Arizona then I'm going to get one as a reward for my hard work. The mini horse and my siberian husky will both enjoy life with me and you people are just jealous of my good life ahead.

>>2277752
Aight, stay deluded, then, you fucking prick.

I'm replying to bait, right?

Implying they'll even know that chucklefuck who shows up 3 times a week to ride them for an hour and be on his merry way is their owner.

>jelous of my good life
>a fucking contruction worker
>living with a horse and a dog

This
They're gonna be more intimate with the stable hands who clean their stalls, groom, and feed them everyday
>>
>>2277677
Good, sobering advice.

It is still my hope to have a couple of retired horses on my property, but I acknowledge the costs and time involved.

I just can't deny how good they are for my mental health, lel. I'm good with them too.

I didn't even read what you guys are discussing at the moment.

Just wanna say I love steaming horses. :3

>choo choo motherfucker
>>
>>2277825

Stablehands don't provide all that much interaction. The horse is more likely to bond with the person who rides and works with it most(usually the owner). If the horse is left along for a week or more without that extended one-on-one time, they notice.

how common is it for mares to steal foals?

and I find it weird that even though some mares do that, other mares don't like to breastfeed foals that are not theirs, I've seen people tying the mare's legs so the orphan foal could drink the milk.

what kind of lame challenges is that?

draft mares are some of the cutest animals on earth.

also the nicest. I've never met a draftie that wasn't super kind.
>>
is it just me or movies/cartoons/etc make riding horses seem much easier than it actually is? You will see people who never rode in their life riding like pros in their first time.

Wow, holy fuck.
So you mean cartoons and movies made for entertainment purposes lack realism???????????????????
>>
>>2279026

The biggest mare in the universe is 13 billion lightyears from nose to tail. If she dies, we all die.
>>
>>2279082
I had an easy time riding my first time.
But it was a very good horse.
>>
>>2279329
The first horse I rode attacked a horse called Jigsaw. I didn't die and from that moment I though they were neat.
