What went wrong?

Dinos were too big for the ark.

Mass extinction killed most life on earth, except for the few that were small enough to hide and/or required a lot less food.
Avian dinosaurs were likely the ones that survived because there originally tiny and perhaps could fly, giving them range to search for food without wasting too much energy ion comparison to walking. Thus all modern dinosaurs are birds that have avian traits, even when they traded their ability to fly (like ostriches or penguins)

When the KT event happened, about 80% of all species were either killed or doomed regardless.

Chances are, not all non-avian dinosaurs were obliterated. But the drastically changed environment made their end inevitable. Large herbivores needed large amount of food, but the food was pretty much gone and blocked skies made things unable to grow for years to come. There was not even enough vegetation for herbivorous dinosaurs larger than a modern cat. This however did not affect the surviving carnivorous dinosaurs too much at first, because they could feed on the herbivores or even each other.
Inevitably, the herbivores died out, and seen the carnivores followed. With not enough meat (even of their own species) to hunt or scavenge, they slowly starved out of existence.

Had it not been for the extinction of dinosaurs (excluding birds), they would likely still exist in different forms. Also, humans would not exist, because humans are a result of the 'mammal uprising' after the KT event.

Dinosaurs are big and scary, chickens are small and delicious. If you ask me, it's an upgrade [spoiler]for humans[/spoilers].
