Greetings, /an/.
I return to you from the Caribbean bearing gifts of fish pictures. Comment, identify, contribute, or ignore at your leisure.
Snorkeling general, or my vacation blog. Whichever you like.
commencing dump
Day 1, 7 mile beach, Grand Cayman.
this was a practice run for my kid, and to make sure equipment was in order.
sandy bottom, some seagrass..
a lot of these little faggots.
some gorgeous little damsels
no clue what this is.
wrasse of some sort I guess
an assemblage of assorted fruits and nuts
skrayillfish by his hole
my kid spotted this annoying little sand crab. It swam, skittered, and burrowed.

He ran into another one just like him and they both extended really long arms and threatened each other in circles for a few seconds.
Day 2, Tabyana Beach, Isla Roatan, Honduras.
easily the nicest reef we visited.
more wrasse I guess?
little yellow faggot
I really don't know what most of these are. grunt of some type?
the most common butterfly we saw
this was the only place I saw large angels
not a lot of mature blue heads. Only saw one or two.
things got interesting once we made it to the reef. Not a huge reef, but very tall. Right on the edge of the drop, very close to shore. Lots of canyons and channels between tall walls and heads. Caves, tons of fish.
if you guys can't tell me what this is imma have to look it up. Stunning fish. Parrot of some sort?
chubs and sergeant majors
just a shot of the reef
diverse and healthy
good depth and excellent visibility there.
this guy was traveling with another large angel, maybe a gray. I couldn't get close, had to zoom in on him. About 2 foot long.
love these little bitches, I wish they were as pretty as adults.
last shot of the reef at Roatan
Day 3, Chankanaab Beach, Cozumel, Mexico.

thank you, much appreciated.
I really don't know my Caribbean wrasses and parrots at all. They're gorgeous though.
We did use your grass sifting technique with some success on day one, found tons of snails and hermits and pistol shrimps. Grass was a bit sparse though.
>>2256424
>Grass was a bit sparse though.
Depending on the area, it can determine the density on grass. But I'm glad you caught a lot!
>>2256437
we ended up using a laundry bag for a net, it worked about right and didn't take up much space in the luggage. I wish I could've brought home the red and the blue leg crabs for my tank but I fear they wouldn't survive the trip.
Thanks for sharing, anon! Did you happen to go on a cruise? I went on one last year and hit the same spots (didn't scuba dive but I did go on a submarine trip which was nice for me).
this was a pretty little thing, but very shy
>>2256442
thanks for looking!
yeah, I just got back from a 7 day cruise on the Carnival Glory. Did you enjoy yours? Any favorite things you saw?
Jacks? bluebar or something?
only other butterflies we saw, just these two.
didn't see sharks, just a bunch of these rays in Mexico. Close to shore, traveling in bunches.
I fucking love this fish.
is this the princess also?
I told my kid this is the deadly map shell which kills with a single sting. He loves it when I lie to him.
bream of some sort? I'm probably way off.
shoal by a coral head. We also had good depth and clarity here.
chiton with mother-of-pearl valves. These suckers shone like a silver dollar in the tidepools.

Neat! I've been on the Navigator and Freedom through Royal Carribean but we stopped at the same destinations Carnival did. Here's a neat turtle took on my wimpy Galaxy S6 camera.
I've also "swam" with manta rays and dolphins but no actual fish.
>>2256498
Nice shot! I like turtles. My kid was scared of the rays and we didn't wind up having time to swim with dolphins. I hope to go back in a couple years and do more. I really want to do the submarine thing at least once.
did you stop in Belize? That's the one spot we didn't get in the water, we ended up climbing Mayan ruins instead. We saw one of the huge Royal Caribbean ships in port, I'd like to try a cruise with them next I think.
>>2256508
Thanks! We went pretty deep so lighting got sparse. The rays were de-barbed and very gentle. The submarine was very exciting and great for my dad since he can't really scuba dive (bad back).
I did stop in Belize but went on a city tour and boat ride instead. There were some smaller creatures in the water but what I mainly saw was foliage like pic related.
From what I can infer, Carnival is a bit more family-friendly while Royal Carribean is more "luxurious." The staff was extremely polite and there was always something fun to do, but after a while, it got tiresome for me. They really saved our butts when we had to miss our flight and docking due to bad weather; we ended up in Orlando, FL for a day then spent an extra day in Jamaica as opposed to a day in Haiti. The Freedom ship was partnered with Dreamworks so there was a parade of Dreamworks characters one night and a breakfast with Shrek characters (my sister and I were the only adults there without kids but I wasn't about to miss out on meeting Shrek). I really enjoyed my time and I'd highly recommend giving Royal Carribean a shot!

Cool pics OP, I'm in Bermuda right now and seeing a lot of the same fish. what was the grass sifting technique you were referring to in >>2256424 I want to find some more inverts on my snorkel and dives.
P.S. nice Slippery Dick >>2256353
>>2256520
Yeah, the jungles were really cool. We saw wild monkeys in Belize and Honduras. I didn't get any good pics of them, but I did get a shot of me being molested by a trained monkey.
it was pretty cool though, they didn't keep the monkeys in cages. They roamed free, but would come down and sit on your shoulder for treats. You could see them playing a hundred feet above you in the forest canopy.
>>2256524
Mudskipz can explain better, I learned from him.
but we just grabbed a handful of sea grass and stuck it in a laundry bag. Shook it to get rid of sand and then opened it up to see what we got. We got a lot of sand fleas and little inverts. Picked up a nice 6" fireworm but I let him go quick.
are there good reefs in Bermuda? I've never been, I'm always looking for good snorkeling spots.
>>2256534
Lots of good reef in Bermuda. The best ones might be a little deep for snorkeling. Lots of nice shores and patch reefs close to shore though. There are parrotfish everywhere which is apparently a big reason why the reefs are healthy here
>>2256550
ah, that's gorgeous.
I can free dive to 50 feet without much problem, but all I can do is go down, snap a pic and come back up. Anything deeper than that I can't touch without renting gear. But that pic looks like exactly what I'm after.
>>2256553
And that's just a patch reef like 10 feet off shore. If you are willing to go for a boat ride you can see some really spectacular reefs. I saw pic related at around 15-20 feet so if you can free dive to 50 you'd be totally set. Saw some midnight parrotfish here and it made my life.
good thread OP
>>2256646
Your son was probably thinking it was an alphabet cone, which is moderately toxic at the least. Today, I'm posting a video I thought I lost of a wild triggerfish that let me pet it.
>>2256391
French angel, Pomacanthus paru.
>>2256646
I don't live in Bermuda unfortunately. I'm just studying here for a semester of school.
