Inverts-that-arent-shrimp Edition, Mk. II

>The diving bell spider (Argyroneta aquatica) is one of the few species of spider known to live almost entirely under water. As with other spiders it breathes air; when submerged an air bubble is trapped by a dense layer of hydrophobic hairs on its abdomen and legs. A. aquatica is able to remain submerged for prolonged periods of time due to the silk-based structure it constructs in order to retain an oxygen supply, named after the diving bell structure it resembles.

Hey guys need help iding the three plants in pic related. Im only new to the hobby and have just started setting tank up. Bought some plants today and just doing some research found that i accidently bought some aliminum plant. Now am heaps sketchy on the seller and am worried the one at the back maybe purple waffle though not sure although it doesnt look like the pics on google images i cant find it when searching for common aquarium plants. Anyone here that can id all 3 ? Thanks in advance

Still having algae problems I don't know what to do other than rigorously cleaning my tank every sunday. The algae sticks to my plants in sure it's not good for them, bight 6 amano shrimp, 2 of which have died I think I have 4 left then seem to be doing nothing. I have reduced my lighting to only 6 hours a day, I have some seachem flourish excel comming in maybe that will help. Injecting c02, makes no difference. Help me anons.

>>
>>2255608
it'll get better as your plants establish themselves. you can try adding plants, especially weed type ones that grow super quick.
>>
>>2255374
it's either pearling or you just did a water change.

>>2255481
can't you just take the snails or the fish out?
>>
>>2255632
If you use copper based products, it can seep into glass and shit and the tank will leak of copper for a really long time. Also, I think copper can kill plants if I'm not mistaken.
>>
>>2255632
I have a lot of snails dug down into the sand. If I treat the fish for ich outside of the aquarium that had the ich outbreak, and reintroduce ich free fish into that tank, won't they just get the ich again? I try to vacuum the gravel often but I have a lot of plants, there is no way I'd be able to get it all.

turning up the temp to 86 stops the ich from reproducing, so it should be fine.

I'm talking about the floating plants that grow so fast they a menace. Duckweed, water lettuce, anarchis, elodea, and hornwort are a few. Basically, you want your plants to be able to out compete the algae.

Baby tears are a bit hard to keep from what I've heard, and I don't think they're fast growers.

How do I know if a plant is a root feeder or a column feeder? Can they be both? I'm just wondering where I can spare root tabs. I'm split on Hygrophila difformis and Brazilian Pennywort.
>>
>>2255762
it's not plant safe.

>>2255774
pretty much all plants are both. there aren't studies done on each plant done to see which it benefits from more so you basically have to go off rule of thumb.

rosette plants (e.g. swords) take up almost all nutrients from the substrate. stem plants benefit most from the water column. pretty much all plants (besides floaters) uptake from both the leaves and the roots, including terrestrial plants.
>>
>>2255783
Is this a stem plant? I think it's reineckii albeit a very weak one.

Is it necessary to add conditioner for a top-off? Maybe like 5% of the total volume? I have a tank that evaporates quickly.
>>
>>2255881
usually I don't in my tanks, but I would always use conditioner if I had sensitive fish.
>>
>>2255884
Would you add conditioner as if you were doing a water change or just a few drops?
>>
>>2255881
>>2255885
Small amounts of chlorine from tap water is going to do more damage to your filter bacteria than to your fish.
Just dose as much as recommended for the gallon or so you're adding.
Ideally you should be using distilled or RO water for top-offs for evaporation, to avoid buildup of dissolved solids. Not that big of a deal, though, especially if you change the water regularly.
>>
>>2255885
>>2255887
I heard you're actually supposed to dose conditioner for the whole tank.
>>
>>2255755
It's because you're not meant to have plants
>>
>>2255889
Yep. It's cheaper to dose the water your topping off with.

What can I do for my apple snails? I feed crush Calcium carbonate pills 100% derived from oyster shells and mix it into "jello" for them which I feed every day but I read that the water also needs to be of a certain hardness with a certain amount of calcium in it so their shells don't dissolve.

Does anyone esle here raise food for their fish? Currently i have daphina magna being raised in a tank for my minnows. They breed fast and have been living for almost 3 years now woth no replacment. Just a light, bubbler, and the occasional yeast.
>>
>>2255894
As long as the pH is above 7 they'll be fine. You can use crushed coral gravel or dead coral chunks to raise pH. There are buffering products as well, but coral is easier and longer-term.
>>
Is it true that you should add your base fertilizer 24 hours after a water change because the conditioner will just render it useless?
>>
>>2255938
makes sense but it should depend on your water conditioner. not all of them bind heavy metals.

>>2255893
prime is like $10 to treat 5k gallons, so I wouldn't really worry about the price. a good conditioner does more than just dechlorinate.
>>
>>2255894
As far as I know the shell formation actually happens with calcium drawn directly out of the water, not a dietary intake. Use crushed coral, I hear that works well.
>>
>>2255940
Who's talking about what prime does? I'm talking about stretching your dollar and making it last longer m8.
>>
>>2255943
they can absorb it from their environment as well as ingest it, either is fine. snails are basically just mucus membranes.

the reason you don't want them in acidic water is because it destroys the shells as quickly as they can build them.
>>
>>2255946
if you want to stretch your dollar, don't buy any dechlorinator. just leave your water out the night before your water change.
>>
>>2255949
Nah m8. I'll dose the water that's going into the tank before adding into tank. Chloramines just don't go away if you sit your water out.

Im thinking about upping my plants. I've only have experience with anubias nana, elodea, and windelov fern (all from what I understand, "beginner level" plants).

I currently have gravel in my 10 gallon with betta fish. If I wanted to get into plants that need to be rooted, would I have to change my substrate? Or are there plants that can be rooted in gravel?

Also, having rooted plants, how does one go about gravel vac? Or would having rooted plants in a different substrate eliminate the need to gravel vac?

Sorry for so many questions. I've only been in the hobby maybe 4 or 5 months. The next tank I get (going for at least 20 gal or 36 gal) I want to do completely planted. Just need to do a LOT more research on planted tanks before going that way.
>>
>>2256061
My experience comes from dwarf baby tears. Mine weren't doing too well at all on gravel, they uprooted easily and I lost half of the plant. Since switching to 20 grade pool filter sand it has been doing much better. It has not uprooted since and has been sending out side shoots. I only vacuum open areas with no plant.

There are several other "beginner" plants that will grow in pea gravel, such as swords, crypts, water sprite, wisteria, and hygrophila. Root tabs are an easy way to make gravel more "hospitable" to live plants.

There are also a lot of other plants that do well unrooted, like mosses (java, Christmas, phoenix), süßwassertang (aka pellia), riccia, marimo, hornwort, buces, pennywort, bladderwort, and floating plants (salvinia, frogbit, water lettuce, etc.).

>Also, having rooted plants, how does one go about gravel vac?
Gently and not that thoroughly. Mulm serves as additional fertilizer for the plants, so a lot of people just don't gravel vac around their rooted plants at all.

If you want to get plant-friendly substrate for your next tank, it certainly helps, but you really don't need a bunch of fancy equipment to make a planted tank look good.
>>
>>2256097
>>2256062
Thanks for the tips! When you mention "swords" do you mean something like rosette or Amazon sword?

Unfortunately, the only place I can find live plants locally is Petsmart, and I've learned to look up every plant since they sell "umbrella plants" and peacock fern (I really love the leaf shapes, but apparently, it isn't an underwater aquatic plant), and they used to sell mondo grass.

Is there a way to get morimo moss to "carpet" and ornament? I tried one once, and didn't know you had to roll the damn thing. It stunk so bad from rotting.
>>

I still have small populations going on in some vats, but never enough to make it sustainable.
>>
>>2256107
50 cm side to side and 50 cm front to back? That sounds really big.

>how much am I supposed to give them per fish?
As long as each one gets 2-3 mouthfuls of food each day they're fine, and a lot of people will skip feeding altogether one day a week. Fish don't need to eat much to get by.

>When you mention "swords" do you mean something like rosette or Amazon sword?
Yes, Echinodorus species. If you buy the ones in those tubes they'll die back before converting to underwater growth and recovering, so don't bother with the more expensive, larger ones.

The plant they call "temple compact" (or whatever) is a kind of hygrophila and should be pretty easy to grow. Their "umbrella plants" (peace lily, much cheaper at Home Depot), "white/gold ribbon plant" (lucky bamboo) and mondo grass (may also be at Home Depot as "monkey grass") can be grown if the leaves are kept above the water. I have some in the filter compartment of my shrimp tank.

If you splay out the marimo ball and use fishing line to attach it to something like plastic needlepoint mesh or slate (flooring tiles from Home Depot work well), it'll look kind of carpet-ey, but it grows very slowly, and tends to grow upward more than it does outward.

Pic related is my 1.5g kitchen shrimp tank when I first set it up, with emersed white ribbon and a marimo carpet.

Man this is confusing me.

I had one of my harlequin rasboras die today, no sign as to why at all. It was perfectly healthy this morning yet when I get home from work its just keeled over. I've had them for about 3 years now so i'm not sure its old age.

10 gallon tank with 3 neons, (formerly) 3 rasboras, a dwarf gourami and a weeaboo shrimp. Planted with swordtails, anubias and java moss. I do weekly water changes and feed them tetramin tropical flakes daily, occasionally i'll drop in some fresh bloodworms. My Ph is about 7.0.

what the fuck did I do wrong?

I have a school of danios living with a turtle or like 5 months (only one has been eaten) One of them started to struggle in swimming today; floating toward the surface with head pointing towards the surface.

Anyone know what's up with it and if it's gonna be kill? (More importantly, whether it'd be bad or not if the turtle decides to eat the weakened fish)

0.25 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite, 40 Nitrate if it's anything (Water change was done last Monday and is on a 30%-50% biweekly schedule but with like x4 filtration due to the turtle. Filters might be due for a cleaning so that's the only lead I have in the event they all get fucked up)

personally I consider pH to be the least of my worries. I'd be way more concerned about ammonia and nitrites. my tank is pretty stable though so I only test if fish start dying.

obviously you're doing fine though if your fish are making it to 8 years.

Well my poor Betta died sometime between Last night at when I got home from work this afternoon. This was the only picture I could find of him I have no idea why he seemed fine yesterday and the other fish in the tank are still fine 1 African Butterfly Fish 1 Angel Fish 2 Bala Sharks 7 Neon Tetras 1Rosy Barb 1 Plecostomus 1 Violet Goby and 1 Apple Snail in a 45 Gallon
>>
>>2256583

Yeah everything is fine in the tank levels are good checked them right after I pulled him out of the tank nothing seems out of place all the fish get along well. Believe me I agree I like them so much better the Rosy Barb was my girlfriends fish from before we met it's like 4 years old now it's a survivor though she had it in a 10 gallon tank when it was younger and never did any water changes she let it evaporate down to 1/3 full one time and filled it with straight tap water. He's survived chlorine A massive Ich outbreak from a stupid Walmart fish being underfed being overfed. Being "pet" etc

anyways, many bettas don't do too well in large tanks. since your water quality sounds fine (for now!) I'm going to guess that he was bullied or just afraid of one of the semi-agressive fish in your tank. angelfish are crazy assholes, and barbs aren't recommended to have around bettas since they're nippers.

Bettas love larger tanks with fish smaller than them. Even in the wild there territory can be a meter or more.

oh, absolutely! many of the fish that are in that tank will be/are larger than a betta, and certainly more aggressive. there's no issue with keeping bettas in large tanks with peaceful fish.

>>2256628
that's good to hear, but some of those other fish aren't suitable for a community tank of that size either. you should decide whether you want a semi-aggressive, or a peaceful tank, and go from there. additionally, your goby needs brackish water.
>>
>>2256638
Yeah the Goby I am actually concerned about I came home to it one day it came from one of her friends it was in Fresh water before we got it. Our angel fish is actually quite docile though he came from the same tank as the Butterfly Fish at the pet store I've never had him bully a fish in the past. And as for the Barb like I said it was her fish from before we even met and it got moved into the big tank when we moved in together. Bumble bee catfish came out at feeding today, took 2 whole shrimp pellets all by hisself, fatty.
>>
Just set up a 30gal. Organic soil with pea gravel over it. A few water changes and its pretty clear. I added some plants after about a week of the water sitting, no filter or light besides normal room lights.

Added plants: Rotala rotundifolia, Staurogyne repens and some kind of local creek plant from a friend's tank. (Wanted to get his water bacteria and a few tiny limpets)

So now I have a normal full spectrum bulb on it around 12 hours a day, no filter, just air bubbles. I'm concerned of two things: algae outcompeting the plants, and plants not getting enough CO2.

I want to avoid using a filter and artificial CO2. I was planning on breeding a ton of grass shrimp in this thing.

What problems am I going to encounter with this setup/idea?

There's really no reason not to use a simple sponge filter. Instead of the normal rock thing, just hook the tube up to a sponge. You get a nice place for the shrimp to feed and a place for bacteria to breed.

Organic soil has (obviously) a ton of organics. It's smart to sift out as much of the large organic stuff, like compost or leaf litter, as you can before you put it in the tank. Expect algae to be pretty bad at first as the organics decompose- and don't expect to be able to put livestock in very soon.

To combat the impending algae bloom, I'd start running your lights no more than 8 hours a day until nitrogen levels are normal. You might want to add in some floating plants- they're great at sucking nutrients out of the water column so algae can't use them.

I did something similar with topsoil and organic garden fertilizer. Algae went nuts for a while, but after everything stabilized it's a great tank.

Yeah, the algae has already begun. I just hope it doesn't murder my new plants before they have a chance.

What specifically would keep the grass shrimp from doing well this early on? Algae is already starting to go so they have food. Is it just too much nitrogen for them? Sadly, I didn't buy a water testing kit as they were out. Getting one later this week so I can monitor shit.

>>
>>2257299
Well since things are going to break down from the organic soil It is gonna take like 3-4 weeks before you can put live things in without dying. Cycling is important but I've done fish less and fish in cycles many times in 10 years without losing anything. Water changes and what not.

absolutely, timers make it much more convenient.

my tank took a few months before it was really stable. all those extra organics make it take longer than the one month that cycling generally takes.

Speaking of upside down catfish, one of mine has looked like death itself for about two months now. He has no fins and his face is white. I've tried salt (there's none in there anymore) and Melafix, and I keep the parameters at 0, 0, 10-20, but he's stayed the same. He comes out at food time with the 3 other upside down cats, and I see him eat, but he does tend to stay "right-side up." All of the other fish in the tank are and have been fine, including his 3 catfish buddies.
I'll try and get a picture of him tomorrow. I really don't know what's going on with him.

A lot of people recommend Synodontis catfish for African cichlid tanks without specifying any particular types because "they're all from Africa, too!" And neither they nor those listening seem to understand that Africa is actually a pretty big fucking place with a lot of different environments in it.

>>2257892
Make sure you get Synodontis nigriventris if they're going in a community tank. Synodontis eupterus is also sometimes sold as "upside down catfish" and those ones grow over twice as large and get a pretty nasty temperament when they're older.

So, I took my bio lab project home with me, and now I have planaria (the parent, and its severed tail; both are in the process of regeneration). Most of what I'm reading online is suggesting that I feed them a tiny bit of egg yolk and use spring water in the jar.

But I know they can also infest aquariums. Would it be safe to assume I can safely use a tap water dechlorinator that I use in my fish tank, and/or feed my planaria fish food? Or would that be less ideal?

When making a diy canister filter out of 5 gallon buckets. Does everything need to be airtight? I bought a submersible pump and I'm wondering if I need to return it because the cord will have to come out of the filter somehow.
>>
>>2258295
if the canister will be below water level it needs to be completely sealed.

I run cords in sealed filters by cutting the cord, feeding it through a small hole, and then re-splicing outside the filter. The hole is then sealed with fat globs of aquarium-grade silicone sealant both inside and out.

They'll eat anything, and live in chlorinated water, even. Just try and keep the ammonia low. If they burrow into the substrate and start reproducing, your fish may not be able to control the population well.
Not that they're really harmful to adult fish. The only thing I've read is that they'll eat eggs and baby shrimp, which my experience with them in my shrimp tank seems to corroborate.

So I found a canal that had a shitton of stuff. I caught a baby pleco, a warmouth(I think), a lot of jewel cichlids, dwarf crayfish, some nerites and ramshorns and other snails, and bluefin killies.

I kept three killies and a nerite, and the killies are getting destroyed when ever they come out. My biggest topminnow ate one overnight. It's a bummer, I wanted to make a more complex native tank. The nerite's alive though. Any tips on what I should feed him?

5.5 inches is the reported max, which really isn't that big for a decent sized tank.

SAE aren't aggressive but there's several other fish that are confused for them that are.

I love otos, but I've heard they can be hard to keep alive if there isn't enough algae and I didn't want to risk it. I do love my SAE, it's so cute to see them perched on a leaf and chasing each other around.

It's going to be a planted aquarium and I've purchased two bags of substrate and a bunch of sand

Does it work in this order:

>Clean substrate/sand
>Add 1-2inches of substrate
>Layer with sand

Or

>Clean substrate/sand
>Add thick layer of sand
>Dig impression where plant root will be
>Fill impression with substrate
>Cover with sand

This my first planted aquarium, so please, any tips are greatly appreciated

Hi, I need help identifying one of my fish. I don't know what it's called. I know it's a gourami of some type.. i'm just not familiar with them well enough to know what kind. Here's a pic of the dominant male. I think there's a more submissive male and one female but honestly, I can't tell. Does anyone know?
>>
>>2258978
>>2258977
Also, not even true. The type of co2 diffusion I use, includes a long rectangular 'bell' as well as a powerhead aimed at the well, agitating the surface thoroughly. Without this action, not much co2 is absorbed into the water. So just put the powerhead on a timer.
PS. all of this normally happens in a sump, so doing that in a show tank, well, you can do it, just won't look the cleanest.

I agree completely. If you deem it with your while to put up with the maintenance of a diy system that's great, but some people want to be able to quickly and efficiently set up a co2 system. Either way it's fine. There is a place for plug and play as well as diy.
>>
>>2258993
For me it's actually simpler then whatever you use... I replace my 5 gallon carboy of fermented beer once a month, and start a new batch on that day, while drinking last batches first few cold ones. And enjoyable.. Sure, if you want to shell out a hundred bucks for something that can be done for next to nothing, go for it. But I'll still call you a sucker

This, I have pressurised co2 with an atomiser inline with the canister input. No fucking around with yeast, no ugly crap in the aquarium, constant output at constant pressure, turns on an hour before lights on, turns off an hour before lights off. Costs $15 or so to fill the cylinder.

Congrats m8, make sure to not do too much c02 at once or you may harm your livestock, also watch your ph at c02 will effect it.

I have the fluval 88g kit from amazon, and bought an adapter to just use regular paint ball tanks, shit lasts months and its about 3 dollars to refill.

>>2258946
You are right it can be done much cheaper and just as effective, but to me it's a purchase of convenience it's much easier for me to deal with a c02 tank and valve gauge, than to hassle with recipes and diy setups.

>>2258993
I think he can do it however he wants, you say he is a consumer for buying this, but the entire aquarium hobby is a consumerist hobby, so it's not fair to say that when we all have to juggle time vs expense. For my c02 I literally turn it on to a specific amount, and leave it on 24/7, have bubblers running as well. It has yet to empty I got it filled maybe a month or so ago.

Hey guys,

Is it normal to sometimes have one schooling fish die when you buy multiple? I bought 6 Pencilfish 2 days ago and one bit the dust this morning. Its stomach was ripped open. I don't know if they were fighting or the corpse was chewed on after its death but I noticed that yesterday, the group was dispersed and that one particular fish would sometimes chase another one and I feel like this is the one that was being chased. Oddly enough, when I found him dead, the group was back together again and it still is.

The water is fine in my qt tank. I'm wondering if it's because they're stressing out because lack of cover. I only have one silk plant in there.

I feel really bad because this is my first fish death in the hobby and it's only been 2 months since I tackled it.
>>
>>2259108
Dwarfs are the friendliest, Marmorkrebs are the coolest, the rest are assholes.
>>
>>2259237
it's pretty normal for new fish that are wild caught or badly bred to die. I won't worry about fish deaths when it's only been a few days.

...I wouldn't mind some pencilfish, they'd go along really well with my color scheme.
