Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

Is there any new Info regarding breeding these micocrabs?

back when I had them, I had them spawn multiple times, but no matter what I tried, The larvae allways died on me.
>>
>>2252393
Rachael O'Leary (msjinkzd) said she breeds them pretty regularly. IIRC she keeps them in a small tank with an oversized sponge filter for lots of surface agitation and moon lights during nighttime.
>>
Anyone had any luck with red cherry shrimp in a community tank? Am setting up a 55 gal with planty of rocks driftwood and plants/moss. Want to keep guppies , mollies and neon tetras. Am i wasting my time putting shrimp in too?
>>
>>2252446
>tetras
will def eat the shrimp
>>
What's the smallest sized tank I can get away with for breeding cherry shrimp?
>>
>>2252486
2.5g? I think it's all about stability, of course you could go 1 Gallon etc but the smaller you go, the harder for you to keep the parameters stable with all the evaporation and growing population.

>>2252446
You can keep them but dont expect breeding of the shrimp, gupps, mollies and Tetras may snack on the baby shrimp. Rather try Corydoras and micro rasboras, if you want fish that are mostly baby-shrimp-safe or Otocinclus if you want fish that don't predate baby shrimp at all.

Also make sure theres a sponge/tight mesh on your filter intake so shrimplets dont get sucked in.
>>
>>2252446
Tom Barr keeps them in his community tanks and they breed so much he can't get rid of them. His tanks are always very very heavily planted, and provide a lot of hiding spots for the babbys.

>>2252486
Smallest I've had any luck in was 5.5g. I kept some for a long time in a 1.2, then a 2.5, and they stayed healthy, but they never bred.

Not to say it's impossible. There are a few people online who have done it. They probably just put a lot of work into maintenance.

I bought this fish a while a go and I am wondering what type it is?
Is it a dumbo that has just had its fins nipped to many times or something?
I bought it from here

But it does not look like the fish in the pictures

>>
>>2252515
I've kept cories on barebottom tanks in quarantine (2-4 weeks) and never noticed any problems as long as they had hiding spots.
Try growing Xmas/peacock/Taiwan moss attached to slate tiles or flat rocks/wood to make a faux carpet substrate.

Lost an earthworm in the sand in my tank last night and now my ghost shrimp is milky and my Amanos are blue, there was a film in my filter and my ammonia is at 1

What do

I have an empty 29 gallon, would it be advisable to transfer everyone to that with the filter tonight?
>>
>>2252593
>That's what it looks like to me.
I really got ripped off paying 20 for him, he is great though. Most active betta I have.
>>
>>2252598
No, just do a big water change. Have a dig around in the sand and look for the worm if you like.

How big is your tank?

Earthworms are literally full of shit, I don't bother with them.
>>
Have an 50 gallon I'm getting up to keep some shit in

How do I tell what is safe for decorations
Can I use rocks and shit?

Also should I stay away from a pebble bottom if I'm going to have catfish?
I'm not going to fuck around with sand so its either pebbles/small rocks
Or nothing for substrate

>Anybody keep African Clawed Frogs? Thinking about getting a couple in a spare tank I have. I can't stop laughing when I watch videos of them eating.

I do. Hope you don't intend to keep them in the room where you sleep. Sometimes they get quite noisy at night.
>>
>>2252617
It's a 20 long, half full.

Did 25% when I got up. I'll do another 25% when I get home. Hopefully I can find the worm, I have a lot of sand in there.
>>
>>2252655
I had heard they call. What sort of age do they start doing that?

But no, they'd be downstairs anyway. They sound pretty easy to keep, no special requirements etc, how do you like them long term?
>>
>>2252665
If the ammonia doesn't drop and you're still concerned just so a 50%+ change in one go, can't see it being too much of an issue
>>
>>2252607
With good care the fins will grow back. If he bit them off himself he might just keep tearing himself up, though. Some bettas can't seem to help themselves.
>>
>>2252667
Why do you want clawed instead of dwarf?
>>
>>2252682
I prefer the fact they're more comical and obscure mostly (I'd be getting albinos). They seem to have a little more character and more active feeders, as I've read that dwarfs can be reluctant to feed unless you put their food right under their nose.
>>
>>2252692
That is a fair point, I just think being able to keep them with fish is good.
>>
>>2252706

I have 4 in a half filled 10 and they're great. As for the feeding I've trained them to come to my hand and glass tapping, those plus their sense of smell helps them locate the food. Even then they fumble and bite each other (no teeth=no damage)
The croaking is more of a small creaking sound always fun to hear.

Got a new fish. How long should I quarantine it?
>>
>>2252515
my experience with cories in a bare-bottomed tank was that they became stressed because they could see their reflection. it was only for a month long QT, so I don't know how they'd be for longer.

>>2252607
you could try dosing with melafix, that stuff is apparently great for regrowing fins.

I dunno, I've read about some having a false gravid spot so maybe that's what's up. Are your guppies darker in general? 3/4 of my females have lighter/translucent bodies which makes it easier to tell what's going on.

If they never change in size then I'd chalk it up to a false gravid

My dwarf gourami has grown a taste for my baby tears that I'm trying to carpet. I haven't noticed him tear it apart too much but I'm just keeping a close eye on him.
>>
I'm still new to this hobby.

I got a clown pleco a week ago and put it in a 10g quarantine after my tank showed 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite after 24 hours of dosing ammonia. Another tank cycled shortly after so I put apple snails in. I found out that they ate my plants so I put them in the qt as a temporary solution. So in this 10g qt there are 2 snails and one pleco.

Today, I found that the water was really cloudy so I did a test and it showed 2ppm ammonia. I panicked and changed 75% of the water. I checked again and now I have .25/.25/5.

What is going on? Why are there nitrites? Do I make another water change now? Is it the snails that are producing this much ammonia with their waste?
>>
>>2253078
>minutely toothed

A snail has teeth like a saw has teeth.
>>
>>2253085

>>
>>2253097
"teethed" as a descriptive term isn't the same as teeth like most animals have. they can't bite or chew, just scrape. really we're just getting into semantics now, but the point is that a snail can't cut off a leaf.
>>
>>2253102
Did one of the snails die?
>>
>>2253103
Except they can. They don't snip it clean, but yes they can dig into the blade of the val and split it.
>>
>>2253103
>A snail has teeth like a saw has teeth.
Pretty sure a saw can cut through a leaf.
>>
>>2253104
No. They are quite active, actually. Could it be because I'm letting food sit until it breaks down? Does that produce more ammonia than poo?
>>
>>2253107
Yeah, if they're not eating it. You should remove undated food after 30 minutes or so. Blanched veggies pollute a bit less.
>>
>>2253111
Oh man. I've had this cube of snail Jello in for days...
>>
I asked a similar question in the last thread about getting an Oscar, but realized my 47 gallon bowfront is a tad small for a full size Oscar.
So, my aquarium is currently full of Mollies and Guppies that were being used for feeders. I no longer have need for the fry and would like to change the tank over to something a bit more appealing. Is there a fish that I could get that will eat my unwanted feeders, but not immediately kill them all just for fun? I want one that will grow to a good size and is moderately aggressive. I was recommended a green terror cichlid by someone on the previous thread, are there any other good candidates?
>>
>>2253137
A green terror is probably a lot more aggressive than what you're looking for, and it would likely tear up any plants you have in there.
Kribensis would be good, but they only get about 4 inches max.
You could also look at severums, rainbow cichlids, or blue acara cichlids. Medium sized gourami like opaline or snakeskin could also work.
>>
Can I make a diy version of pic related out of gypsum and food pellets? I feel like they'd be useful to have for my crayfish.
>>
>>2253158
Green terrors aren't agressive as you think. Much more mellow than a lot of cichlids. Acaras are also in the andinoacara. Just like the andinoacara rivulatus.
>>
>>2253158
All the cichlids you listed would rearrange tanks as well.
>>
>>2253078

Is there some kind of article on guppy social behavior? Google doesn't give me anything aside from really scientifically-written papers. I have a little school of males and it's actually very interesting to watch them interact. They engage in a variety of gestures with each other and some individuals act differently toward specific other individuals. I can only guess what they mean.

Some behaviors I've seen include "kissing" (fighting), extremely bent C-shape of the body at another, fanning tail or clamping tail very noticeably, and doing a sort of wiggle-dance toward or away from another, to name some.

If you aren't feeding everyday, buy a couple gallons of spring water to mix with your tap water. ANd the extra 2 bucks or so will really make a difference in clarity.

If you don't want to scrub, take out fish for the night in his old tank water, and add some hydrogen peroxide from the drugstore.

Here's the cost list for not having a shitty algae tank.

Less feeding (net gain of over 100+ dollars per century)

Iron nail (free or like less than a dollar)

Fish hotel (5 dollar garbage can that can hold water)

Hydrogen peroxide (2-5$ and you use less than a capful, on the day before a waterchange. kills the algae and doesn't bother the plants.

Bury an iron nail under the plant, to help their chlorophyl, you have too many diatoms to have proper nutrient balance.

So first, take fishy out for the night, then add hydrgen peroxide to the tank.

Then in the morning, scrub the sides (It'll be possible with the fingers now) and do a waterchange.

If you don't overfeed then you have nitrates in your water. Blame corn.

This Petco near me sells some manzanita perches for parrots that say they're 100% natural. Can I put those in my tank?

I don't want to deal with driftwood anymore since one of my pieces started rotting, released a fungus and killed off all my plants for months even after changing the water. >>2254350
where did you get your other driftwood?

some wood is not suitable because it's been chemically treated. the bird perches are fine. you can either boil the wood multiple times, or soak it in a bucket. you'll need to peel off the bark if it isn't smooth. could take you months and hours of work to get it water-logged and aquarium safe- hence the higher price on the stuff sold for aquariums.

I collect my own driftwood. I live near the coast, so fuck paying for it!

Petco again. The driftwood lasted maybe a year when I noticed that fungus suddenly all over my plants in literally a day. Maybe it was something else causing it but the wood was getting soft so I assumed it was just breaking down and releasing shit into the water.

It didn't kill my plants, just covered them in the fungus and was absolutely disgusting. I could not get rid of it and had to go to silk plants for several months.

The perch is smooth but I didn't think about waterlogging it. Might be better to just get ready wood then. However I also live near the coast. How do you make sure the wood you are putting in is safe?

oh, how weird! they must have been selling the wrong type of wood.

I'll use anything that that I can ID as a hardwood and is mostly smooth. softwood has no pores- it's more uniform than hardwood. it's usually less dense, and you should be able to make a dent with your nail.

I live in the PNW and most of our wood is soft so I have to guess a lot. You can usually tell which wood has been kicking around for a long time and which is starting to decompose. Harvesting your own is a good way to get critters though.

It's always a good idea to boil or bleach things you put in the tank to make sure you're not bringing in weird things.

20 gallon long. It is recommended that a tank size should at least be 36" x 12". But I think 30" x 12" is doable, since when he dies, I can manage a trio of Dwarf Mudskippers in a 20 gallon long.
>>
>>2254438
Where are you finding dwarf mudskippers for sale?
>>
>>
>>2254440
That's the hard part. You need to know which species is which. A lot of times, online stores will misidentify them, and you'll get the wrong species. A good trick is getting to ask for a good picture of their dorsal fins raised when they're in stock. Which then, you'll be able to ID them.

Dwarfs can be sold at your lfs as a freak thing if they get them, but none in my area sells the dwarf species. So I'll have to go online. My main guy has been able to get any I want for the past six months, so when my mudskipper dies, it's probably going to be a while if I can get one from him.

Here's the weird part. A smaller dwarf species is sold off of Segrest Farms, which big name petstores, like Petco get their herps and fish from. Funny thing is, I know all their senior staff and manager, so I might try to haggle them a bit to see if they can order some. I did that to get them to order Rams.

Oh, just to know, there're 42 species of Mudskipper out there, the most recently described species was discovered in August of this year.

Manzanita tends to fungus if you leave the bark on, you'd have to take the metal screws out, and it'll float initially. You can soak it for a while beforehand or use rocks to weigh it down.

>>

>Yeah its just all by itself, looks depressing
It's recommended that if you want two P. barbarus in the same tank, you need between a 40 and 50 gallon tank. Mudskippers are gobies, and any person that keeps gobies(particularly saltwater ones) knows how aggressive they can be to each other. Smaller mudskippers are territorial to their own, but their size allows the fights to be harmless or even comical to watch. While species like mine are larger and fights can be brutal and will(can) eventually lead to death. They've even been known to corner and maul fiddler crabs in aquariums.

My honest advice if you want a small/budget tank is to go for a betta/fighting fish setup.

Slightly more expensive due to initial fish cost (but they're considerably cooler looking, arguably) and heater.

You can thrown in a couple of other small fish like tetras or something that won't nip its fins and you've got a nice-looking aquarium. Can use nice plants too if you like as there won't be goldfish eating them half the time kek.

A well-bred goldfish can live over a decade, easily, and get very large. They rarely do so due to being jammed into inadequate setups, however.

If you want to put it in a small tank and don't care what randoms on the internet say, then go ahead. But it will not live as long as it could. That's all.

20 gallons isnt really a small tank, they have 40 goldfish in a 20 gallon at my local pet shop surely it will be better off with me than in there.

Why not just get platies or mollies instead? Balloon belly mollies even have the same sort of depressing, deformed shape as a fancy goldfish.

Cause I like the telescope ones but can you keep mollies or platies by themselves?

Then what, they died? That's not a very good lifespan for a goldfish. In fact, it's pretty crap.

That's only for the round, fancy goldfish.

>>2254815
Honestly, what is so enticing about a goldfish? A paradise gourami is coldwater, easier to handle, and has just as good a personality.

Just get one of the battery operated ones if you're so desperate.
>>
>>2254893
Yes. A ten gallon tank is good for 3-5, but they're fine alone. They breed like mad if you get mixed sexes, so keep that in mind.

First thing that came to my mind was Micropoecilia picta, but there's a good chance they'll interbreed with your guppies.
Killifish are cool. You could get some peaceful ones that would get along with your gups. Rocket killifish are tiny, very peaceful, and look amazing. As far as egg-laying species go, they're also not that hard to breed.

I found a betta looking like that in a pet store garbage can with about 30mil of water. I guess they mistook him for dead. Took him home to a 2.5 gallon tank and he looked pretty good after two weeks of clean water and frozen foods. Gave him to a friend for her ten gallon, but it crashed not long after.
Maybe you should put yours back in the smaller tank for now, until he looks better. Or use a breeder box or specimen container to keep him separate from your other fish.
>>
>>2254951
I could put him back in the 1 gallon but no heater. My living room stays 70-72 though. He's in a 36 inch 30 gallon currently at 76 degrees.
>>
Is it bad to keep betta in 2.5gallon?

I've had fish tanks for years and know about cycling and all that. My tanks always have live plants. Can I put a betta in an uncycled 15 gallon tank with live plants without having to do a gazillion water changes or will the ammonia still be too much while the cycle starts? Can I get away with 20% once a week if it's uncycled because of the large water volume? Or will I have to do daily water changes while it cycles? Will the betta even produce enough waste to cycle the tank?
>>
think im going to start raising some fish from the very beginning , ( i work in fisheries and have the knowledge/skills) but simply lack materials to do it on my own ,

if i were to nigger rig a set up together would anyone be interested in seeing the process?
anything from stripping the males and females of their love juces to incubation ( and my probably terrible setup)
to fry and eventually baby fish hopefully?

>>
>>2255091
Yeah my tanks pretty overstocked
>>
>>2255032
I own 10 bettas and have never cycled the tank before adding them and have never had a problem.
>>
>>2255032
If you feed sparingly, it's unlikely the ammonia will ever get high enough to really bother the betta anyway. I've also heard about very densely planted tanks cycling near instantly.

Test the water for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate before water changes. I don't think most people actually check it that often, though.

it's going to be suffering with infections like >>2255005 because of ammonia spike
so basically, no, use a bacterial additive to speed up the process

>>
>>2255134
The tank I got the betta from had ammonia level of 4.0ppm. Hoping he recovers. Very slowly acclimated him. Swimming around well and now greeting me. Fish stopped scaring him now.
>>
>>2254609
True, is it that hard to call it a butterfly loach at the very least. You'd think the name would be easier than pleco. Then again, appearances and all that. You keeping any?
>>
>>2255032
Yes. It's very common. I have been doing it for years with no problems. If you're good about water changes then there is nothing to worry about. If you're lazy just cycle it.
>>
>>2255143
I use to keep reticulated hillstream loach. I loved them. I liked how they fight over algae spots. Pretty entertaining.
>>
>>2255128
They usually sell kits at fish stores or online. Put in the allotted amount of tank water to the vial, add the chemicals, shake and the color will be the level of nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, etc.
>>
>>2255145
No clue what species mine were. I got three different ones from my main lfs who ordered them in for me, and I got three different species albeit I think one was one I already had at another store I go to. They were all just labeled hillstream loach in the same tank though. I used to keep neon gobies with them, but I kinda like them in their own tank for a lizardy mountain/ desert aesthetic. I added in Buffalo head cichlids since they also like current as I mentioned earlier, but they kinda staked out their own territories and wouldn't let the loaches graze in as large an area. Kinda wanted to move them, but the tank is basically a stack of river rocks with epiphytes and some crypts growing in between, so I couldn't catch them. They're growing out really well though. Nice long fins, colors, and the males are growing the humps on their heads. Loaches still have grazing space fortunately, and the cichlids are mellowing out.
>>
>>2254986
I would like to have that kind of dock for my turtle but I'd have to do several modifications my tank. (It's a bare bottom and most likely will eventually find all of the substrate of a digging site in the water)

10g, and yeah with a betta.
>>
>>2255160
Yeah, it's pain, but it shouldn't be too big of a problem with a bare bottom tank.

You'll gain more than you'll lose, it's totally worth it IMO.
>>
>>2255180
what kind of substrate do you use for it and how big is your enclosure?
>>
>>2255129
That's pretty neat, but it looks like the size of a sealable cereal container.
>>
>>2255188
I grabbed some dirt from my local forest and mixed in some gravel. My enclosure isn't very big, in fact it's quiet small, but it's only going to be around for 1 more year, until I finish uni and finally move out from my dorm.

The dirt just goes into the toilet when I siphon it out, easy enough to replace.

>>2255192
Not exactly, but pretty close. as I said before I'll be moving out in a year, and be able to upgrade to pic related and make the whole thing a cool little patio pond whatever.

No, I gave them away to an ex-boss to live in his pond in a sheltered garden with other very big, very old goldies. Didn't sell them.

I realised it sounded different after I made the post, mah bad.
