/herp/ reptile classifieds for finding breeders of various scaled and sundry creatures

>kingsnake.com
>faunaclassifieds.com
>reptilescanada.com (Canadian breeders)
>Also check to see if there are any annual reptile shows/expos in your area as these are good places to find good animals from good breeders at partial discount

/herp/ officially official all purpose care sheet of wonder and magic

>sand a shit
>use a thermostat
>read all the caresheets
>set up your tank before you get your herp
>regulate temps & humidity levels prior to herp arrival
>do not fuck with (handle) your herp for at least 7 days after bringing it home and ideally wait until herp has eaten at least one meal (for snakes), two meals for lizards, frogs, etc.
>PVC tanks are way better for most applications and worth the extra money
>it is best to avoid chain pet stores when looking to purchase live animals as mass breeder suppliers are not especially careful about health and sound genetics... it often saves you money long term to spend a little extra up front to get a healthy animal

This is my 8 year old beardie, Smaug (I thought it was a super original name as a teenager). I've had him since he could barely stand. He was the only non-standard coloration at the pet shop, and was also the most active one. Some asshole had bought him for his girlfriend, but she turned him into the pet store when they broke up 2 weeks later. When I heard his story, I knew he was the one I wanted.

I frequently took him to school, and he has his own entry in my senior yearbook. He's a tough bastard too; in '09 there was a terrible ice storm in my area and we lost power for 2 weeks. He lived under my hoodie for that time and survived off of body heat like a badass.

These days I occasionally use him as a live model for the art classes I teach on the side (when I'm not at my "real" job). He really is the chillest dude ever.
>>
>>2255256
to your credit Smaug probably was pretty original 8 years ago

I don't have pictures but I need help with identifying some weird turtle I found a few years ago. Can't find anything. This was in northern Kentucky on the Ohio river. Went to get my camera and my brother let it get away. Anyway thing was about 10 inches long and had actual flippers. Didn't look like a sea turtle at all. It had flippers and no claws. I remember it being a dark green almost black hard shell.
>>
>>2256204
softshell turtle maybe?

Hey guys.

I owned a bearded dragon for 13 years and she passed about one year ago. I've always been interested in snakes, but didn't want one at the same time as my lizard.

I have a friend who is moving away and is trying to give me her albino Gopher Snake for free and was wondering what you guys thought about that species? I've only really interacted with corn snakes and rosy boas in a pet setting and they were very chill and docile.

Thanks for any tips or experience.

Scale separation and "hips" say it's obese. In the second photo it looks better but the other two it looks obese. Not morbidly, but it will get there if its being overfed.

lol 10-15 rats for that retic is way overboard, good way to feed it into obesity, though. 2-3 colossal rats are more than enough for a snake that size. Of course, that's still multiples, so rabbits are better, but 10-15? Maybe if you were feeding a bunch of small-sized rats. Also, weekly? Haha no, that's barely enough time to digest the food let alone for its organs to go back to normal size. An adult retic should be eating a decent-sized meal monthly.

Can leopard geckos see the "infrared" light these ceramic heat emitters have or is it invisible to them? My UTH doesn't get quite the right temperature all on its own for daytime temps so I want something I can use with it for mostly days or cold nights in the house without disturbing her.
>>
>>2257940
Forgot the pic of the exact one in question
>>
>>2257940
Nope. Gecko's visible spectrum does not extend to that wavelength. You can use it 24 hours no problem.
>>
>>2257955
Neato, anyone have any recommendations on general lighting to use for daytime? Anything I can use in the dark as well that won't disturb her too much so I can see her when she's most active?
>>
>>2257983
For checking on my geckos at night i use a red light on a dimmer. Those things are pretty bright at full power (for my eyes) so i only turn them on at 30% or so. Lights only get turned on when i'm checking on them and off when i'm done. The geckos can't see the entire spectrum of red light that we can but they can see some part of it, which is why it's not a good idea to have them on all night.
>>
>>2257992
Do you think a 25w red halogen would be fine just to check on it?

No idea, but males can stay quite small if fed a little less, so I assume that's what happened here, some breeders keep their males 3'-4'. He's about 4' long. His owner was feeding him small rats every 2-3 weeks which is appropriate, though, so he may also just be small male, which happens. I'll probably stick to 3 weeks, I don't think he's big enough for mediums unfortunately.

yes actually
I have no idea how much you'd have to pay for one, but look up tentacled snakes and elephant trunk snakes

on the other hand there are of course sea snakes but most are highly venomous so I doubt they're readily available for captivity

tentacled snakes are super cute though
>>
>>2258475
I took care of them at a petsmart that was ill equipped for them.

They stress extremely easy and have been known to die from it so handling is not an option most of the time. They also require an open air cage with high humidity and decent heat which can be tricky especially to someone who has no experience with reptiles which is amplified since its not an enclosed box you can tinker with.

They are really cool but if you are considering getting one read as much as you can on them and if you are still sure get everything for it first make sure it runs stable for a week before you get the animal. It really isnt what would be considered a beginner reptile.

They seem to be pretty small for snake standards, growing a little more than a foot to less than 3 feet (while that's huge for fish standards, take in mind that they aren't much of active swimmers like fish and are content in being stationary, so a tank longer than them and enough for them to turn around easily would suffice.)

Seems like if you're gonna put it in an established aquarium, it's gonna eat all of your livestock. (Though if you have a tank full of live bearers, a population explosion is actually really good for once)

One of my two leos (both female, had them for approx 2 years now) currently always hides in the cold spot, while the other stays warm... I'm pretty worried. The temps are fine on the warm side, 32degrees directly under a stone hide, about 26-28 in the other warm hides and moist hides.
Cold side should have the same temp as my appartment, so like 23-ish degrees.
It's currently winter here, but over the last 2 years the leos did not give a shit, and continued on normally. Should I try moving her back to the warm spot, or let her be and reduce her food intake...? Or maybe should I just continue feeding them normally? Please give me some advice.

Jup, I do. Got only 1 moist atm, but besides that 3 warm hides, 1 medium warm hide (mid of tank), and 2 cold ones. The other leo is currently in the moist hide, so all 3 warm are free. I moved her from the cold to her basking stone, but first she went hiding under the medium hide, and then back to the cold...
Reason why I currently only have 1 moist is that both leos used their moist hide way too often a while back, so i converted one moist to a normal warm spot.
Pic rel is tank
Both eat normal, that's no issue, but I'm still a bit worried because this happened from one day to another

Is it true that babby beardies shouldn't be fed with insects longer than the space between their eyes?
I'd like to know the science behind this statement.
I've been feeding my 4 months old with massive crickets and superworms for about a month now, because that's all they have in my local petshop.
He's been pooping just fine and seems happy.

as long as they are at max the size of his head but preferably smaller he will be ok

Honestly at 4 months its less of a baby and more of a juvenile and fully grown crickets should be just fine

Id probably go with smaller mealworms though.

He usually eats 2-3 large crickets, 1-2 superworms, or 10-13 mealworms, depending what I have. 2 times that per day. Is this okay?

Get a bearded dragon or a corn snake. If you don't have much experience you are setting him up to fail as chameleons are a bitch to create for. It will crush him.

Horned frogs aka pacman frogs are nice also. I prefer African bullfrogs

Get a beardie, they actually like people.
Chameleon would kill you if it could.
They don't like to be toutched at all. Great for the kids right?
Beardies are like lapdogs. They enjoy being pet, you don't need to be a masterful engineer to build a viv and they don't bite.
Just give the babby beardie a week to settle in before you start handling it.
Thanks for not buying a chameleon.
>>
>>2258806
chameleons are notoriously difficult to care for properly
depending on how old your son is, you're also going to have to explain to him that he can't touch or hold them

also if you get two and they are both males, you'll end up with a fight on your hands
>>
>>2258827
Even with a male and female after they are adults chameleons are solitary.

They should only ever be enclosed together for mating and not for very long.

>>

>ive been round too many scumbags houses with smelly lizards in them. is it possible to trim their horrible long claws?

That sounds like you've been around druggies who own green iguanas. Beardies don't have long claws and they don't smell at all.
>>
>>2258848
They can smell. But only if you let their veggies rot or shit pile up.

All you need to do is be responsible.

It isn't hard.
>>
>>2258845
What the fuck?
You're supposed to have climbing material in the viv. The claws of a beardie don't need trimming as they wear out when they climb.
>>
>>2258852
I never had to trim.

And I had some pretty active climbers with some still rather sharp nails.

Nothing wrong with dulling a little more so they don't scratch up the little ones.
>>

Well then it's the veggies smelling and not the lizard
Their poop smells pretty bad due to high protein diet tho. I clean them up immediately when I see one.

Depends on the country you live in. If you live in the US, keep in mind you can only buy from breeders who are members of USARK and have special permission to ship them, or a breeder from your state.

If you live outside the US I can't help you at all, not sure of any breeders outside the US.

>>
>>2258994
No it's a federal law stating they cannot cross state borders, or be exported out of/imported in the US. You cannot ship, drive, or fly a snake into a different state without becoming a felon if you're caught without having proof you were a member of USARK on/before September 2014 I think it was. They're no longer giving out any of those exceptions, as of sometime last year.

With any luck, the recent additions to the Lacey Act will be overturned, or USARK will be able to reduce the reach the Lacey Act has and allow all the listed species to be transported across state lines again without having to remove them from the list. I wouldn't look forward to that for another several years at least though. Until then, it's in-state or a breeder wo is allowed to ship.

Is it normal for a ball python to eat during shedding days? Mine just ate when his eyes are murky, his eyes are normal now, but he still hasn't shed.

They do stress easily but if you take the time and go slow you can "tame" them and they can actually enjoy handling / out time. It starts with hand feeding and just having them shoot their tongues at the food in your hand is fun. That being said it depends on the individual and takes a lot of time.

Speaking of, what kind of snake is usually used for snakeskin? I don't imagine they're captive-bred, so anon would be taking a step in the right direction if there's presumably always going to be a market for snakeskin.

I don't agree with skinning snakes because they are all wild caught and raising snakes for it makes no sense monetarily.

>>2260674
rattlesnakes probably
people kill them just for existing

the problem i can see with raising snakes for skins and meat is that not all snakes reproduce a whole lot, and they take a while to reach an adult size appropriate for harvesting
>>
>>2260675
Because there's no demand for captive-bred snakeskin, because there's no supply to create a demand.
In the very long term, with enough participants, it could potentially sway the market. It's no worse than giving up.

>>
>>2261390
Yes, they'll calm down. Give him 1-2 weeks untouched without even offering any food. After 1-2 weeks offer him his first meal with you. Then 7 days later give him another meal. If he takes both of these meals first try, then you can begin handling 48 hours after the second meal.

Ball pythons are very shy, so they should be given plenty of time to settle in before you start handling them. If the snake refuses, do not handle at all until they start eating regularly again. If you need to take them out for whatever reason, out they go straight into a holding container and straight back in.

Some snakes lose their defensiveness or jumpiness after a few weeks, some after a few months, and some after a few years. Just handle regularly and make the sessions positive.

>>2261392
Looks good to me, no scale separation and no "hips." Has a nice squarish look to him.
>>
>>2261390
leave your snake alone for at least one week to acclimate to new tank and surroundings.
>>
>>2261437

Slowly slide your hand under his chin and under his chest. They often climb right on from there. If he decides he wants to move off your arm or to a place you don't want, just hold your hand in front of his face and he will stop. Reptiles can be funny like that. Like if you were to do that with a mammal they mostly just go straight over or around the hand. Lizards though, it's like a stop sign to many species. There are exceptions to that of course, like monitors don't give a damn about you or your hand and they're going where they're headed regardless.

Yes, say the mother is a harlequin and perhaps father is het for harlequin as well = high probability of that appearance. There are a few books on this subject you may wish to look in to. It's difficult to be precise if you don't know the genealogy of the parents though. Both may have other hets and maybe some recessive genes in the mix as well, so hard to say.
>>
>>2261904
>>2261871

I would say the father is a Buckskin Dalmation Bicolor and the mother is a "Mocha & Cream" Harlequin.

Unlike some reptiles, Crested geckos are a lot like humans. they're just gonna mix their shit all up. You will not find a baby that looks identical to the mother or father specifically. Mother's eyes, dad's nose, aunt's hair, etc. I agree with that other guy - the father probably has some harlequin in him.

I bought a Zoo Med heating pad that I intend to use with a Rubbermaid plastic bin for a corn snake. Is it better to attack the heating pad, say, to a ceramic tile rather than just slap it onto the plastic? And can any of you recommend a good thermostat to control the temp of the heating pad with?
>>
>>2262033
I didnt take the paper off mine and just slid it under
It wont get hot enough to matter especially if you use a thermostat
The jump start brand is a good choice but i have a zoomed dial one that works just fine also
>>
>>2262033
>Rubbermaid plastic bin
>how do I use a heating pad
Just give the snake to someone who will take care of it
>>
>>2262046
Seriously? I'd rather keep my snake in a plastic bin than drop it in an aquarium. Plastic bins keep moisture and heat far better than any glass enclosure.
>>
>>2262037
Thanks for the advice.
>>
>>2262046
Under tank heating with plastic tub is a well established method with excellent safety record. That is how snakes are raised in every breeding facility i have ever seen or heard of; heat tape on rack system with plastic tubs. Using a thermostat (which should always be used regardless of tank material) the heating will never get near the melting point of plastic. Not even close.
>>
>>2262070
Yes, I rate the various snake housing methods from best to worst as:

zoo habitat > PVC tank > sealed wood tank > plastic tub/rack system > insulated and aluminum foiled aquarium to get desired ventilation and humidity stable > unmodified screen top aquarium.
>>
>>2262073
Thanks for the information.
>>
>>2262073
i mean they can but only if it short circuits and all the safety measure fail
but if you're using a thermostat like you're supposed to there should be no problems

snatched this guy today because petco doesn't know what they got
I hope he oranges up real good

what kind of salads do you make for yours? I know what greens are good for them, but what else do you mix in there and how much do you add?
Also I'm thinking about starting a dubia colony to help alleviate feeding costs, what size colony am I looking at here to feed a single bearded dragon?

Do any physical stores sell something similar to CHE's but without the stupid amount of markup that petstores have?

HELP!!!!

my ball python momo got a new roommate cause i went to petco and bought a cornsnake who i named mini. momo and mini, cute right? omg i love them but since i put mini in momo's tank momo has not eaten since 2 months ago and he had a shred too i know they are hungry after they do that. whats wrong with my momo?

HELP!!!!
>>
>>2262209
I would just suck it up and pay the price. The thing is going to last you 3-6 years minimum, and probably 10+. $25 for one bulb is a steal for that.

Plus, if you order online, they tend to explode in transit, so I wouldn't advise buying online anyway. They're very delicate in that regard.
>>
>>2262249
25? I'm pretty sure the ones we have are about 40
I could suck it up for 25 bucks
I have one thats 150W and I got it for eight dollary doos on amazon
>>
In any case, what wattage should I use for a ten gallon tank?
I have one thats 150W buts thats way too much power. Is 50W enough? Its just got to keep it warm enough through the nights for a beardie
>>
>>2262338
Prices probably differ on location, then. I got my 100 watt CHE bulbs for somewhere around $25-30 each at Petsmart. That was 3 years ago, and prices of a lot of stuff has risen since, so maybe it's more expensive. I used to get 3 packs of EcoEarth for $7 now it's almost $11, the small rat packs used to $12-13 now they're $17 (last I checked - been a few months).

Still, $40 isn't all that much to complain about when you're getting a product that will last at least half your reptiles' life if cared for.
>>
>>2262214
You cannot cohab a corn and a BP. Their requirements are different. Get a new tank immediately.
>>
>>2262346
could use a 150 on a thermostat (which is heavily recommended) so you dont need to upgrade the bulb when you get a new tank/enclosure of 40+ gallons

Have you folks heard about this?

>According to a Facebook post that recently went viral, a man devastated by the death of his girlfriend grew very attached to a 10-foot cobra which he believes is his lost partner reincarnated. For the last couple of years, the two have been inseparable, doing everything together, from watching TV to going to the gym.

This

We do the best we can for our animals. I spend whatever I need to to keep my Beardie happy and if I lose power, I'm going to do the same as this poster did, that's not mistreatment anymore than having captive animals in general is and if you think that then fine but given that these animals can lead long, healthy (seemingly happy) lives in the care of us ugly ass primates.... I think I'm going to keep keeping them

dont put it on the warm side of the tank is really the only option
Its gonna shrivel up and need to be thrown out by the end of the day/next morning if your lazy anyway.
Im just glad my iguana is a pig and will eat everything within a few hours
>>
>>2263330
i figured as much, it just feels wasteful because my beardie is still young and only eats salad sparingly
>>
I was kind of forcibly given a leopard gecko. Moved to a new state and am lovong with family for a bit. From what i understand, she was hardly ever given water before. How is she still alive? Im talking days or even weeks with barely any water, maybe even none at all. Theres a small water bowl in there that i fill up, and she drinks it. Sometimes she runs out and spends a minute or two drinking. Did she just get used to not having water or what?
>>
>>2263496
they are desert species so water is kind of a luxury anyway
if they've been feeding it, it probably had enough water to get by just on crickets
>>
>>2263330
my uro is the same i will leave him a heap of salad and greens and lentils and it'll mostly be gone by the end of the day

his lamp makes it so fucking hot even on the cool side of the tank that shit shrivels up after a few hours
>>
>>2263334
thats fairly normal they tend to care more for the insects as they are young but its good to provide them with salad aswell

Can also mix in some mealworms with a salad if it likes them and it will most likely eat some by proxy
>>
>>2263586
I'll probably end up doing that anyway, but he doesn't seem to interested in worms right now
I don't think they move enough.

About when can I sex them though?
>>
My beardie is agressive as hell. He just bites me and starts shakin his head to really tear at my hand. I'm afraid he'll never want to chill with me and watch Jurassic Park like my old iguana.

My Pacman frog will not eat anything other than mice. This is a relatively new issue, and it's not like I feed him mice all that often (just 1 fuzzy one time a month). Other than that, he usually eats once or twice a month, typically either mealworms or crickets. However, about the last 3 or 4 times I've tried to feed him something other than a mouse, he's wanted none of it. He'll suck down a mouse without a second thought, but he just tries to get away when there are bugs crawling around.

He hasn't really lost weight, he's a little deflated because he never eats, physically he looks absolutely fine, believe me, I check all the time. He can't be impacted because he only gets fed out of his enclosure, and is passing regular stools, no sign of internal or external parasites.

Is he just a picky little jew or am I missing something?
>>
>>2263719
>Other than that, he usually eats once or twice a month

I meant once or twice a week. He gets fed weekly or bi-weekly, depending on how busy I am that week

I work at a pet store and someone dumped their boa constrictor with us. It looks to be really emaciated. I can feel its ribs when I pick it up and the spine is clearly visible when it bends. It's about 2 years old.

I took it home to fatten it up but I'm not sure if it has IBD or something like that. Haven't noticed any neurological signs but I'm taking it to the vet for a check up on Thursday.
Right now it's in hard quarantine in a bin that's roughly 36 inches long by 13 inches wide. Got a heating pad on one side that's about 90-93 degrees and I have a heater in the room keeping it about 80.

My main question is what is the best way to transport this snake to the vet? In a pillowcase? Or a rubbermaid bin? Or what?

Also if he comes back clear, what's the best way to fatten it up? Apparently it'd been on a hunger strike for 2 months but seems like it must have been really underfed before that.

Any advice welcome.

Pic is of snake.

go a couple weeks just resting your hand in his tank every other day, 15 minutes each time. even flighty cage aggressive beardies tame down a lot with time and patience.
>>
>>2263880
honestly I would just recommend you take it slow and steady. Don't try to overfeed it to make it gain weight faster, it'll probably just end up hurting it.
>>
>>2263719
try mealworms/waxworms/phoenix worms/hornworms in a smooth sided dish they can't climb out of and leave the dish in there every other night. you may have to wait him out for a while until he realizes the rodent gravy train has dried up and he needs to eat something.

re; transport

Pillowcase or snake bag tied closed and put in a cardboard box with some crumpled newspaper for padding. If you use a pillowcase, wash it and dry without any fabric softener or dryer sheets first.

No, it doesnt at all.
Boas always have a crazy appetite, that snake is seriously neglected. Just a matter of neglect and likely bad husbandry to make it stop eating. Boas are really easy to care for, it's sad to see someone managed to fuck that up.
>>
>>2264364
Oh. Yeah. That's what I'm thinking. The pet store I work at is pretty bad in terms of reptile care. The invoice from 2 years ago showed a 29 gallon tank that was bought with it, so they probably didn't upgrade, were probably only feeding live mice (no rats) for its entire life, and I'm sure the heating was nowhere near adequate.

That's why I took it home. I know it'd have died there in a heartbeat.

How do you guys deal with the electricity bill? Is there any way to tune it down?
I'v been using a 75 watt heat lamp bulb, is a ceramic heat emitter with the same wattage drain less energy?
I heard too much risks involving UTTH like burns and burnouts even with the best thermostats, but how good of a substitute is it conpared to a heat lamp? I covered most of the lid with a paper foam board so heat remains inside.

Do you have any better, closer photos? It doesn't look emaciated or even underweight here.

There's literally no reason to suspect IBD unless it's showing symptoms. If you live in the US, IBD is extremely rare.

>>2264434
That's overfeeding. You need to be feeding a single feeder at a time, and are those fuzzy rats or mice?

>>2264532
I have 2 120 watt panels, 2 100 watt CHEs, 2 80 watt panels, 5 flexwatt sheets, and 2 75 watt bulbs plus a quartz space heater. That all adds maybe $20 to my monthly bill.
