The pic is retarded. Plants don't piss out clean water. The nitrate is absorbed together with the water which then evaporates into the air, not into the soil.

Sorry man, I just found some pic on Google images. Not too sure how accurate the diagram was.

A lot of the setups I've seen are where the plants grow from a gravel substrate submerged in water from a fish tank. I'm looking for a cost effective setup for two people living in an apartment.
