Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size
-parameters
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

Drip acclimating my new baby boy! He'll probably die within 6 months, but oh well. Always wanted one of these guys.
>>
Should I take pictures of the aquarium that I work at? It's pretty damn big.
>>
>>2246852
Mine comes out as like 9 and drops to 8 after sitting in a bucket with an air stone running for a day and I'm still having trouble with low, <6 pH because of aqua soil
>>
I wish it would be accustom to new fish owners to learn about the basics of fish keeping before owning fish, especially the nitrogen cycle. Mostly when they go to Petco/petsmart. Every time they buy a fish, the lessons would just play through their minds like that shitty Nutshack meme videos.

>>2246945
Yes. Absolutely.
>>
>>2246926
Those are actually pretty decent if you're trying to quick cycle a tank, or for after media changes.

>>
>>2246986
Yeah that was my reasoning behind it. At least he'll be happy and well cared for in my tank until he dies.
>>
>>2246947
All right, I'll be going tomorrow. I'll see if I can get any decent pictures of our sea turtles, they always follow me around whenever I talk about them.
Also, whenever I talk about how parrotfish poop sand, one always decides it's best to relieve himself right then.
>>
>>2246992
It's fun to watch beach makers at work when I dive.

I'm guessing you have some in this tank? What species?
>>
>>2246994
I haven't been in a while (I had to study for SATs) but:
Stoplight, Blue, Queen, Rainbow, and we have a few juveniles which we aren't quite sure of the species yet.
>>
>>2246997
Oh shit, those are all Florida natives.
You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention.
>>
>>2246999
Haha, I'm the same guy who posts the fossils all the time.
Yeah, we're in Florida. We have four main tanks, but I'll only be taking pictures of the two ones I work at. The rest, maybe later.
Is there anything you particularly want to see? We have a ton of stuff, if it's not too specific I can almost surely find it.

Dwarf gourami. He's so sweet. Getting along so well with the guppies. Really hard to take pictures of though.
>>
>>2247007
Why would he only live 6 months?
They're not hard to take care of are they? I've had mine years. Was I just lucky?
>>
>>2247001
I mean what stuff do you have? I specialize in coastal seagrass species, but I can find interest in most stuff. You have any corals? Or gobies/blennies would be nice.
>>2247006
I understand that, but a lot of people still think that 100% water changes are fine because just get out the poop in the gravel. My brother still does 100? changes, and I argue about it. He also only has the Spongebob themed decor, mostly because of his son, but also it's easier to clean.
>Like a betta or minnow tank

>>
>>2247014
That ornament is amazing, what is in your tank though and how big is it? I can't see anything.
>>
>>2247010
I don't think we have any, but here's the more interesting stuff:
>6 Foot Moray Eel
>A bunch of Angels
>Burrfish
>A ton of babby sharpnose pufferfish
>Two groupers, a coney and another one I forgot
>A fuckload of wrasses, including slippery dicks
>Giant hermit crabs
>Langosta
>School of Lookdowns
>Cobia
>A ton of Tarpoms
>The parrotfish I mentioned
>Fairy Bassets

And, as I said, we have two green sea turtles.
This is only in the two tanks I work at.
>>
I have a blue dwarf gourami and I always thought I had to keep him alone. But apparently you can keep them with other gouramis?
I know you can keep them with cories and stuff but I only like gouramis, is it a wise idea to add more and how big would the tank need to be? Also what type of gourami could I add?
>>
>>2247016
Yeah I can't get a good picture of it, I think I have too much moving water. It's a 29 gallon, I only have two pictus fish in there. I've got that big anubis in the middle which grew over a little house ornament, Java fern, and whatever that is floating someone gave to me. I was trying to go for an asian theme.

I'm trying to get shit to grow on the rock to the right, but my pictus zoom around that rock so much it disrupts everything

Thank you, next upload will be a video I took of Robbie's Marina Tarpon feeding docks(the tarpon feeding is pretty iconic now), but it's underwater, so you can see the tarpon swim. It was a bit murky, but I figured it looks more ominous.

>>2247017
>langosta
You mean spiny lobsters? Or reef lobsters? I'd think either one is neat.
I want to see the Cobia and lookdowns, and groupers. The Coney is like the Atlantic version of the Coral Grouper, so I think they're dope.
>>
>>2247017
Graysby, that's the other grouper I forgot.
Can't think of anything else off the top of my head, we have another eel though.
Used to have a ton of stingrays but the turtles kept trying to eat them.
>>
>>2247034
Yeah, we just call them Langosta. Which is weird because nobody speaks spanish here, I guess that's just what the locals say.
Also, no problem. I can't guarantee both groupers or the spiny lobster (they both like to hide a lot) but I'll see what I can do.
>>

Wow, the day I post about how long my gourami has lived he dies

Just right now, turned over and died.
Can I hear more about this virus?
>>
>>2247051
Oh my god I'm so sorry. Iridovirus. It's from all the inbreeding. Sorry for your fish loss. I hear it's not really a problem for other gouramis like sparkling.
>>
>>2247058
Thank you, mine was nearly three years old so I suppose it could be old age. But I was really attached to the dude :(.

Now I have a 20 gallon with 7 black neon tetras.
Don't really know if I should get another gourami or what desu. Will there be enough room to add guppies? I've always wanted some of them maybe I should try them.

Sorry to hear that. There's not much known avout irido. From what I hear its most common in north american dwarfs that have a weakened immune system via inbreeding. Maybe consider a sparkling gourami instead. I have some myself. They are not known to suffer from Irido.

Anon with Walmart led bulb. It's been about a week and already noticeable growth. My elodea that was practically dead is growing new stems. Hornwort used to looked spaced apart and ugly now it grows upwards and looks full and lots of new growth. Crypts are responding well to it as the have perked up and out 2-3 leaves on each plant. Aponogeton is about the same as its full grown but are putting out flower stalks and my Lilly bulb is growing pads much quicker. Just trimmed 8 pads.
>>
>>2247088
2-3 new leaves I should have said. Before I had two 15 watt CFLs with 5000k. The LED bulbs are 15 watt 5000k.

>>
hey guys looking for some stock advice, I've recently been on a long holiday and I've had my fish in on e of my school tanks I look after, unfortunately some didn't make it, I've left my horrible inbred neons at school and want a replacement school. The tank is a 32 Gal with 10 hengeli rasbora, 1 female betta, 10 ember tetras, 5 pygmy corys and maybe 100 cherry shrimp, basically I'm looking for a small schooling species that add anther splash f colour, I might do neons again but other options to consider are nice. I also have a small, heavily planted 5 gal on my bedside table,it had 2 sparkling gouramis in it but they didn't make it (pretty sue they got out-competed for food) and so I'm also looking for an option for that tank that's not a betta shrimp. If I can't think of anything else I get more sparkling gouramis, loved those little guys.

Depends on the temperament, some are more territorial than others. Also, it's easier if you get a harem. For dwarf gourami together, 1.5 square foot per male or pair is fairly safe. If you're mixing species, you'd have to say what exactly you're looking at.

Do you have any tips?
Some people say all males some say one female for every 3 males.
>>
>>2247950
I do 3 females per 1 male guppy. Or you could do all males or all females.
>>
>>2247950
It depends on the size of the tank. I would keep males only if it was 10g or smaller.

Endlers and hybrids are smaller, healthier, and more active. Floating plants like water lettuce relax them and help save fry. They're extremely easy to keep so long as you don't get horribly bred fish.

Platies get quite a bit bigger so I wouldn't keep them in smaller than a 15. it's harder to tell males and females apart- males have a gonopodium, females have more of a fan shaped anal fin . They like the middle section of the tank, guppies like the top.

>>
>>2247971
Nope. They will chase each other, and if your fish are especially weak or aggressive it can be a problem. I've had one male pass away from that, but he was already pretty sickly looking.

I do see endlers on that site, but they're pretty expensive there.

Shrimp and endlers are the easiest things to breed. Cories would be harder, just because their eggs will be eaten before they can hatch. I highly recommend growing some plants in there as well. BN plecos are easy to breed too but you'd probably want an extra tank.

I breed endlers and cherries, they're such a great combo.

>>
>>2248211
Definitely not a meme, but there's ways around it. Mines too deep and I'm going to need to redo it soon, but im lazy.

Dunno why the other person says it's better with plants.. substrate that's too deep can lead to root rot.
>>
>>2248232
That's like saying the dirt in a lake is too deep and the plants will die.
>>

So my 20g finished cycling but I won't be adding any fish to it for at least a week and a half. I have 4 apple snails, though. Will they be able to maintain the bacteria or should I just keep feeding ammonia?
>>
>>2247412
most of the betta pairs in my past community tanks have paired within a month or two after being introduced and only once has the male been too aggressive to justify taking him out. i noticed a lot more activity especially in the males displaying their colors and fins after pairing and i even got some fry every once in a while even though they got eaten almost immediately. much more enjoyable in the long run than just having one male to a tank imo.
>>
>>2248234
A lake is not the same as your aquarium.

Your tank does not support the same kind of life that the dirt in a lake does. A lake will have insects, freshwater clams, and tons of other tiny critters that sift the dirt. Your tank has some bacteria, and maybe nematodes. Your tank has also only the plants you picked, which may or may not have root systems large enough to penetrate your substrate.

Deep substrate is not going to be a problem for everyone. The dirt in my tank however is high in silt, which leads to compaction. You get a build up of anaerobic bacteria which produce pockets of toxic hydrogen sulfide. The nutrients are unavailable to plants if the roots can't get to them and they can't be dispersed into the water column.

TL DR; you're an idiot
>>
>>2247868
hard af to keep if ur tank isnt very well established and/or doesnt have exactly right water chemistry
>>
>>2248248
>anaerobic bacteria
>bad for planted tanks
Top fucking kek
>>
>>2248256
That's not what he's saying. He's taking about how if your substrate is to deep, the anaerobic bacteria can make pockets of gas that will fuck your shit up if it escapes.
>>
>>2247014
Nice neon tetris.
>>
>>2248263
It's not that toxic actually. My tank burps constantly but it seems to diffuse in the water too quick to harm my fish. Smells bad, though.

I'm more concerned about the long term for my plants since I don't dose ferts.
>>
>>2248263
Get some snails and fish that like the sift through substrate. Problem solved.
>>
>>2248272
The question I was answering was whether it's a meme or not. If you have to take steps to solve it, it's clearly a thing. I never said it was the end of the world.
>>

I wrote the really long post and I'm also the second post you quoted. I think its just one person who was kind of arguing.

Here's a pic of my substrate- sand and dirt. You can see how the bottom half is really dark because it isn't getting oxygen, and the upper half has weird colors (either algae or bacteria). It's pretty cool honestly. The substrate sometimes bubbles for almost a minute straight. The dirt is clumped together so it's almost solid. I love this tank, but its such a goddamn mess I gave up on trying to scape it.

I need trumpet snails so bad but I refuse to pay $15 for them!!
>>
>>2248009
Cave spawning pleco like Ancistrus would actually be easier than cories, but they might eat some of the shrimp. With such a large tank and a lot of cover, though, I doubt you'll run into any kind of population shortage.

>>2248428
I dunno. I have a whisper in a 5g so it fits easily and the air stone is ugly bare in the tank, but doesn't oxygenate as well while hidden. Surface agitation is improved. Water treatment plants oxygenate to house more beneficial bacteria, and I have retardedly misguided inspiration from that.

How often do rams hide in caves? Would they fuck with a cave dwelling catfish?

Also would two 20 gallon filters be better for a 40g than just one 40g filter, since there's more areas for bacteria to grow?
>>
Did I fall for a meme? Everybody kept raving on about mystery/apple snails so I got a few. They IMMEDIATELY went for my plants like they were on a mission. I watched one raze an expendable little bacopa plant. Right now they're contained but I'm not sure whether I should bring them back or not.

I thought they would eat the nice pile of detritus sitting in my tank but no.
>>

She frequently takes him out and "trains him for the turtle races" by making him run around the dorm hallway. I've even seen him ram straight into a wall. She also has a betta which she keeps in a smallish bowl with clownpuke gravel, obvi no heater or filter. I'm not looking for a fight but where can I find beginner care sheets for these guys so I can discretely slip them under her door or casually tell her or something? So my Rosy Red Minnow fishes decided to go do some baby making. They produced approx 60-100 eggs, of those, so far I've only seen 4 hatch. 1 of them is 3 weeks old and seems healthy, his orange color is starting to show. The other 3 are hard to find but they seem to be doing ok. Now my question is how do I care of them so they reach adult hood and how long will it take? I expected all of them to die, I didn't even do any effort to make sure they survived. They currently in the tank with the other adults. I didn't feed them infusoria as I can see tiny itsy bitty scorpion -like white creatures floating around. I assume those are the plankton they eat. Is there anything I should do now?

They only one who's had any sign of anything is my large golden topminnow, who had a single large white patch that looked like a scale that was trying to come off, and now a miniscule white "spine" at the start of his caudal peduncle, right behind the dorsal fin.

It's a Red Eared Slider, one of the most common but also the most mistreated pet turtles, simply because they grow really big and often kept in small tanks because no one wants to buy a ton of shit for them.(plus she's already mistreating it more by making it run places like that) There's a fuck ton of care sheets out there an even an entire site about them, all warning you about them and generally tries to talk you out of getting them because of how commonly people either up letting them die due to negligence or just dump them in any body of water and proceed to fuck up native populations of turtles or fish.

The only thing I could say if she won't listen to the care sheet or whatever (20 bucks she wont), don't let her fucking throw it in some pond or river if she doesn't want it anymore.

Pic related is my 11 year old female, to show how big they can get. (And mine is actually on the smaller end of the spectrum)
>>
>>2249175
My mom has kept two of them in a 10 gallon with a brick. No filter or heater and stay in the back yard all year. She's had them like this for 4 years.
>>
>>2249190
How would they even survive like this for 4 years?
>>
>>2249192
I don't know. She cleans the water though. I'm states away or I would have took them in the night and put them in my pond.
>>
>>2249192
>>2249196
Because they're hardy as shit and can live through so much abuse (which is why people do continue to mistreat them because "as long as they aren't dead, they're fine") It's this trait that does make them really, really good pets if you can be assed enough to care enough about them, as they're very forgiving but also is why they're so good at being invasive, as many will adapt in the wild (and out-compete everything else)

Those turtles may be alive but considering how long turtles as a whole are known to live, they'll be lucky to make it a whole decade istead of several

Alright /aq/

5 gal
0 nitrate 0 nitrite 0 ammonia 7.6 pH 78 degrees F
The only inhabitant has been a betta and some small snails that snuck their way in with plants
The betta is the problem.

I've consulted google so far, but the only possibilities seem to be Fish TB and Scoliosis, and neither of these fit everything I'm seeing.

Yesterday, he didn't eat his pellets like he usually does. Normally he gets very excited, swims up to the top and chases each pellet as I drop it in.

Today I planned on moving him to a 15 gal when I noticed he was swimming strangely. It look like his spine is bent like an S, and he can only turn his head right, not left. He is struggling to swim, and still doesn't have an appetite. Pic related is how he is today.

Any ideas what it might be? Could he have just bent his spine swimming into a wall, or is that unlikely? Anything I can do about that, or should I put him down now?

Thanks in advance, dudes.

M8 you only need a little bit of surface agitation for oxygen transfer. Air stones do 2/5ths of fuck all. I have zero, run pressurised co2, and my spraybar barely ripples the surface and all the fish are alive and well. Just get rid of the airatone full stop.

My aunt had one for years, and the pet store people told her to feed it a few pellets (size of a pin head) a day.

Turns out that it was supposed to be a few pinches a day. Since then, she went from palm-sized to over foot long.

You'd only want to feed them daily when they're younger and then cut back pellets to every other day or so once they're an adult. The rest of the days are substituted with fresh greens like veggies, lettuces, and aquatic plants.

Overfeeding them does make them grow even faster though, which is how you end up with real monster sized ones.

>>2249786

How often should I be dosing with API CO2 booster and seachem flourish?

I have a 20g long with a 5g diy hob sump/filter. I'm growing mint and other misc plants in the sump and have bacopa, water sprite, wisteria, crypts, Anubias, Anubias Nana petite, Java fern, Marimo moss balls, and alternanthera reineckii in the actual aquarium. Sand substrate. Placed about 5 API root tabs all throughout the aquarium.
Lighting is 2x 1600 lumens led bulbs at 5000k and 1x color adjustable ilumi led at 900 lumens.

I want to get good fast growth without getting too much algae. I don't mind a little bit of the stuff, just don't want more algae than plants, you know?
>>
>>2249989
I've been doing 2.5ml of co2 booster once a day and 1ml of flourish twice a week. Getting green on my sand. Should I disk it back or rank it up. I've never dosed before but my plants were looking a little sorry.
>>
>>2249989
seachem has a calculator on their site you can check out

how long are your lights on for? if you're getting algae, leave them on for 8 hours.
>>
What do you guys figure the chances are a wooden desk /table will support a 50 gallon tank, Im figuring 400-500 lbs full of water

I have timers from 7am to 9pm.
7am to 9am is sunrise; weak colorful light getting brighter and whiter over the course of 2 hours.
9am-11am is the 900 lumen bulb at 8000k.
11am-2pm is 900 lumens at 6000k and one 1600 lumen led at 5000k
2pm - 4pm are the 2x 1600 lumen bulbs at 5000k and the 900 lumen bulb at 6000k.
4pm-6pm is the 900 lumen bulb at 5000k and one of the 1600 lumen bulbs
6pm-9pm the 900 lumen bulb gets less bright in 30 minute increments and goes from white to yellow to orange to purple (sunset)
Then I have it to a very dim purple/blue for moonlight.
Everything shuts all the way of at 2 am.
I am trying to make it seem like a natural day for the fish. So even though I have the lights on for a long time, they are only on full blast for a few hours. Lighting goes from left to right add the day progresses.

Should I change anything?
>>
>>2250013

I have my aquarium on a dresser and I got on to of it with my dad to see if it could hold us. It did fine so I figured the aquarium would be ok.

Tell me about Plecos. Can they actually stick to surfaces? Because I have one in a quarantine right now. If it hasn't somehow jumped out, the ABS pipe I put in there for him is the only possible hiding spot.

I haven't seen him since yesterday morning so I poked the pipe to check on him. I then shook it a bit. I then proceeded to take it out of the water SLOWLY and still got nothing. If he were dead, would he have slid out by now?
>>
I have a shitload of unflavored nori that I'm not eating, would my amano, ghost shrimp and ramshorns be interested in it? Thinking about sticking a smallish folded over piece in a small binder clip and arranging the snails closer to it so they find it.
>>
>>2250016
okay, that's complicated.

I don't know too much about how algae utilizes light, but plants can sense when there's even a very small amount of light. It's not about how much, it's about how long.

I'd decrease how long your lights are on, however you want to do that. the reason people get algae is usually too much light.

Yo these look awesome! I didn't even know they were a thing. Where can I get them? I fucking love snails.
>>
>>2250030
Ok I see. I thought it was a quality/quantity of light thing, not length of exposure to any light. I'll start the day 2 hours late and have the sunset come on 2 hours early. Cutting total light by 4 hours should be enough right? Would even the super dim night light need to be turned off?
Maybe I'll just have an algae scrubber running in the sump. What light should I use for the algae scrubber?
>>
>>2250025
Should be fine as long as you make sure its all eaten or immediately removed if left uneaten. It should just be a treat prior to your water changes since it may shred amd get put into the water column.
>>
>>2250044

yeppers plants have a complicated circadian rhythm! that's how they change depending on the season. quality, quantity, and length are all important... but with modern technology it's very easy to flood your tank with light.

it's red/far red light that tells the plant to wake up, so your night light should be just fine. no idea about what an algae scrubber is, but if you address the issues causing the algae it goes away pretty quick.

I run/started a coral grow op ask me anything. If you know what you are doing and have a well oiled system to it, its pure dosh.

It's soul crushingly hard to forgo taxonomic names for trade names on different coral species. However if you don't have the "4chan Pepe Green Acropora" or "Purple Monster" and/or recorded it's lineage then that coral goes from a $100 dollar frag to a $10 generic coal.
