Am considering bird purchase. I've never owned a bird before, what is a good starter bird? I'd like something that is friendly, but won't lose its shit if I'm not around 24/7.

I have one dog, so preferably something that doesn't scratch the fuck out of whatever it doesn't like.
>>
I got my cockatiel about a week ago and since then ive tried talking to him to socialize but a lot of the times he starts screaming and idk if its because hes calling for his flock or what. Ive tried giving him treats through the cage bars but he just backs away i just want him to be my friend ',_,'

Also should i let him out if i cant handle or call him back yet?
>>
>>2246867
It's easier to get them to bond to you from outside the cage than inside the cage.

Is it alright for my African grey to eat bone marrow

Cockatiels

Best starter birds

I would personally recommend a pair of conures but they are fierce as fuck (attacks my African grey on a daily basis)

Reminder that birds (especially single ones) need lots of attention, space and time

>>2246867
Okay this will sound really stupid but just try it like once. Take a small bite out of the bird treat in plain view of your bird, and then try offering it to the budgie. It might just work.
>>
>>2246872
So how exactly do i do that? Didnt find anything like that being suggested while researching this

I did this rn actually and at first he waddled away so i left it between the cage bars, then he came came for it and ate it

Is your bird hand reared?

If its from a pet shop it might take a while. Hang some millet spray in the cage for it to nibble on. Eventually try and hand feed it a sprig through the bars.

You should probably wait a little for it to acclimatise and get used to you before getting it out. If you're unable to get it back in it'll be stressful for the bird.

>>2247056
Rest in peace, lil birb. He is now flying at an endless blue sky without getting tired, watching you from above.

Take him to the vet and tell them it's an emergency. If they have ethics they'll treat him and ask you for the money once he's safe. Then you can negotiate with them. Better to get in trouble than letting him die.

Preface: I know hardly anything about birds

My mom has a pair of budgies, they're fed veggies and a store bought seed mix, they have toys that she rotates out, a mineral block, and their cage is almost always open. The male is 9 and the female is 13. The problem is my mom doesn't believe in taking birds to the vet, so the female has a tumour and the male has a fucked up leg. The female is also very aggressive and is constantly beating the shit out of the male who I believe is mentally retarded from flying into the glass too many times when he was younger. They have zero training and will only go on your hand if they get lost in the house and need to be shown back to their cage.

So these birds are on their last leg of life. She has a bigger cage she found at a garage sale and is planning on getting a couple lovebirds when these two die. How do I convince her that she needs to train her birds and take them to the vet when they have problems? She's not even poor she's doesn't even work because my dad makes a ton of money, she just believes that "they're animals when they die they die I'm not spending money to get a BIRD checked out". I don't live at home so I can't train them or take them to the vet when they need to go. What are some good resources for a tech illiterate mom?

Yes.. of course it's fine. Birds like the sunlight.

The only reason people say not to leave them in direct sunlight is because some people would put them outside in the heat with no shade. Birds can overheat easily. You can tell if he's overheated if he is standing with his wings slightly apart from his body and/or he's panting

How do budgies feel when they're left inside a cage 24/7? No anthromorphism, just realistically. I know people who don't let their birds out and it feels pitiful. They just sit on their perch or swing a little on a swing. Don't they get obnoxiously bored, even in duos?
>>
>>2255001
They do get bored. That's why a lot of birds pluck all their feather out or scream all day

What kind of bird is this? Saw it in my yard earlier this afternoon, it had caught a squirrel and was ripping it before feeding on it. Was pretty chill too, let me get within 5 or 6 meters without feeling threatened while I snapped some pics. Red tailed hawk?

How do you tell if your Parakeet is sick? Is there a way to help them without taking them to a vet?

One of parent's birds is very fluffy looking and unkept. I thought she was molting or it was because she is alone and doesn't have anyone to help maintain her feathers (plus she has no bath), but my parents got a second bird and she's a lot cleaner looking. The contrast is very noticeable. I don't know if she's sick or not. She eats and plays and the like but she seems a bit drowsy. I think. I can't be certain, but it's 12PM and she's still pretty unactive.

There used to be another Parakeet but she randomly died one day. I think she was fluffy too and then one morning we found her dead on the cage floor. That was maybe two or three months ago and we just got a new friend for her this week.

Note, they're my parents birds. Not mine. My parents won't listen to anything I say about taking care of birds; everything is either "too expensive" or isn't worth it for them. They also won't let me handle them. I don't have a job currently so I can't pay for a vet visit myself. I live at home while going to college and I planned on taking them once I moved out. That is, if they survive.
>>
>>2255496
Well ideally you shouldn't get a bird if you plan on leaving it cooped up in a cage all day.
>>
>>2255527
Loose poops and inflamed nares
resting at the bottom of the cage
extreme lethargy
other birds attack and try to drive it away.
>>
>>2255001
They go crazy, which is why good bird owners have 3-4 birds and a large cage, even if you look crazy when you do it.
>>
>>2255531

Most bird owners are bad owners. I have literally met no one who lets their budgies out of their cage.

He gets 1 ice cube of pureed apple/banana mixed with his Passwell's brand food in the morning. He runs out of this by noon-ish. I'm running out of food faster lately doing this.
Should I instead provide him with dry food access all day and offer the fruit puree on its own in addition to the available food (in the mornings)?

He does get native flowers sometimes because grevillea is the shit.

That's pretty obvious.

Not the same anon, but how do you tell if a bird is too cold? I like to keep it cool in my room, not overly cold (at least not that i can tell), but i don't quite know how cold is too cold. There's no draft or anything, mind you. For reference, he's a Jardine's parrot, so i realize they like it kinda warm.
>>
>>2255585

I noticed some mushy looking blue stuff in the cage and on the perches a day or two ago. I think it might be watery stool but I can't tell. Does it mean anything when she's curled into herself? I see her doing that a lot. She rests her head in her wings like she's going to pick her feathers, except she doesn't.
>>
How would you know if an owl is in love with you? I've seen some videos of them laying on someone's shoulder kind of hugging them.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my parent's bird is dying. She doesn't do anything anymore. She just sits on a perch either half-asleep or cuddled up into herself, cuddled into the other bird. I don't know if she's cold or not but she isn't trembling and doesn't feel cold. She has a tendency to just sit on the food tray for hours in that position. She still moves around a little and eats but she seems to spend most of the time sleeping. She doesn't make any noise either; moves her beak a lot but no noise.

My parent's seem to think she's perfectly fine despite her obviously being sick. It's a shame how people are towards birds. None of us have any money for vets anyway though.

SO tell me /an/, how long does it usually like take to get a cockatiel to trust you? Ive had him for about a month now and i talk to him about whatever whenever i get the chance but he wont take treats or play with anything in his pretty large cage. He wont try millet and if i try to give him fruit (i eat some of it myself and then put it in his bowl) he just wont take it. I got him at a pet store if that's important he looked pretty healthy and the shops got a good reputation

>>
>>2258627
training them is a rly good way to build trust.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqtptXFyb2c

basically do that, but inside of their cage. once they get the hang of it they tend to love chasing the stick for treats and you can work on getting them to follow the stick outside of the cage, and eventually onto your finger to get their food. at that point you can start slowly substituting a command words instead of the stick.

if theyre scared of your hands and dont want to take food from them you can just use a longer stick and hold a whole piece of millet spray. just be very patient with them, respect their body language and try not to push them past their comfort levels. trust can take months to build but moments to damage.

Oh anon, those are the birds I have!

They are sweet as fuck.

My advice
>get a pair
>get them young, hand-feed them
>buy burd store mix, add fresh food to their diet at least 3 times a week
>give them a water bowl to bath
>get them a small wooden box in addition to their cage, mine loves the shit out of it
>find a list of food you cannot give them (avocados, chocolate etc.)

Overall, pretty easy birds to take care of. Let them out often so they can get exercise

Also, I suggest you don't keep them with other birds. They bully my African grey

i have a 10 months old lovebird (i already posted him last thread)
sometimes during a preening session or if i touch his wings he(?) will spread them and lift his tail a bit. Is this a certain sign he's female?

How do you tell the difference between molting and illness? My budgie was all puffed up and sleepy for literally weeks. He looked like an unkept mess. I think my cockatiel loved the elections, since he got to sit on my shoulder until 2am before putting him to bed
And the moment he heard me get at 5am to get ready for work up he starts calling for me to get him
I love this little fluffy ball of velcro

My little brother wants a bird too, and I thought of an idea today that I'm thinking might be a good idea
>Living with folks for a while while finishing uni and saving up for a house
>Little bro (He's 13 and not really responsible at all) is wanting a bird too
>Have my 4 month old cockatiel that doesn't really like him (How much he likes other people is inversely proportional to how close I am) in a big cage
>Local vet takes in birds that need a home
>Thinking that it might be a good idea to see about getting a bird from her (Like another cockatiel or a lovebird or something) as my bro's bird
>Keep birds together if they get along, separate otherwise
>Bro's bird would be his responsibility, but I'd still help/intervene as needed
>If he decides he doesn't really want a bird, just keep his myself instead of sending him to a rescue
>Otherwise, little bro keeps his bird with him when I move out
Is this an awesome idea or is post-election fever just getting to me

Bit of an odd question, but would an owl be able to safely swallow and compact a wedding ring into a pellet, or should one only be inserted artificially? The pellet needs to look undisturbed, but more importantly, the owl has to be safe.

This was a serious question. I thought it'd be a sweet way to propose, definitely better than putting a ring in a glass of champagne, but I don't want to hurt the owl. I figure, owls can swallow mice hole, and they don't digest the bones, so it'd be relatively safe, but I'm not certain. I've heard household birds are sensitive to things like pots and pans, but is there any risk of poisoning with pure gold or silver?

Hey guys, I took in a parakeet a few weeks ago, I have two questions. The first is that the bird already had a male name when I got him so I assume they knew he is a male, his cere is also blue, which is apparently indication that he is a male. I wanted to post a pic to see if maybe anyone can tell for sure because I want to get him a little girlfriend. Pic might not be very good, I'll try to get another if that's the case. Also, I want to get him some kind of perch or something like in this video at about the :38 second mark, here is the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYjdjQDS5Hk

I figure I could probably even make something myself so it would cost little to nothing. But I just want to give him something so that he can get out of his cage and he will have somewhere to go. I try to open his cage and let him fly around but he won't do it.

Part of it is quakers are one of the few parrots from a temperate climate, and they're the only parrots to build stick nests instead of living in holes on trees, so they actually stand a risk of being an invasive species. They have pretty sizable populations in a few places in the northern US (including Chicago and New York), despite living through some pretty nasty winters.

How do I get my cockatiel to eat other stuff? He's like over 10 weeks old and is still eating formula, everything I tried to hand feed him he just rejects it and keeps whining while flying on top of me. I got some shredded apple and he did eat some until he stopped and kept whining for the formula.
>>
>>2264018
Have you tried pretending to eat what you are giving it?
>>
>>2263109
Fancy is just a color mutation of a standard Green Cheek, so no. Be aware of what you're getting if you want a "Fancy" Conure, as the name is supposed to refer to a Yellow-Sided GCC with some pink on its chest but big pet stores often slap the name on any slight mutation so they can mark up the price 50-100$. Fully mutated Yellow-Sided/Pineapple/Cinnamon/Turquoise do command a higher price regardless of source but not every color is priced equally so it's best to get your birds from a reputable breeder and know your mutations so you can be sure you're getting what you pay for.
>>
>>2264018
'tiels are infamously picky eaters, pray it never gets sick because if you think food is hard medicine is far worse. In any case repetition and and imitation is key - birds are far more likely to want to eat what you're eating than some foreign substance in its food dish. Try eating an apple with him on your shoulder and keep a knife handy to slice off a little bit if he shows interest since tiels aren't terribly strong biters and needing to put in effort may deter him.
>>
So this is just a thought but lets say i became a breeder of some sort of bird. Could that be a good business standpoint selling healthy hand weened birds. I thought about it considering that there werent any bird breeders in my area.
>>
>>2264348
Breeding is largely a job dominated by old fogies that want to be productive and nurture something that won't die before they do and won't also burden their children.

It's an expensive business to start up, rarely makes any money back in the first year, and can have any profits you do make wiped out by vet costs should disaster strike.

Somewhat safer than breeding pets is breeding a showbird and getting stud money, but even that takes a good bit of time and skill.

Anyone have any luck/suggestions for training their bird to not chew certain things? I understand fully that birds love to chew, and I've got a cockatiel that likes to chill on my shoulder all day but I don't know how to get him to not chew on certain things. The biggest problem is wires, if I have any wires within reach he makes a beeline for them and doesn't give a damn about chewing on anything else (Even wires on my chew-toy necklace) or eating.
I assume most of the reason he wants to chew on them is because I don't let him chew on them, but I would like to not have to put him in his cage whenever I have to do anything involving electrical stuff.

Why are birds always attracted to crumbs?
It's like they have some kind of instinct about eating crumbs of anything, even if it could be potentially poisonous for them, but as far as I can think there's no crumbs in nature. only man-made food can be broken into small crumbs, so it can't be an evolutionary trait

>>

I have a cockatiel that's working out pretty well. During my work day he's on his own, and from when I get home until his bedtime he's perched up on my shoulder happy as a clam.

I'd love to bring him to work even, but he's so attached to me that he wouldn't be content to sit in a cage or on a perch as long as I'm around, and I can't let him ride around during all my back and forth throughout the day
>>
>>2267588
Neat. Mind if I ask a couple questions?

First, how is the noise level? I know birds make noise, which, when alone in a house, can be both a blessing and a curse. Does he make a lot of noise at night, or does he let you sleep fairly soundly? Or, is it a, you get used to it and it becomes background noise, kind of thing.

Second, how's the shit? Can they really not control when and where they go? Is being pooped/peed on a real issue with a bird? Does their shit travel outside the cage? I've only heard them described as poop demons, but it often seems rather exaggerated.

Third, how intensive is the diet? I assume, based on experience, that what is sold in pet stores for them is not really what they need to eat.

Finally, any good resources/websites/books to get good information on husbandry? Especially ones that helped you out in your own experiences.
>>
>>2267599
Fine by me
>noise level
As a cockatiel, he's not jackhammer loud like bigger parrots can be. Apparently my cockatiel is a bit abnormal, because he doesn't make a single sound except for calling for me when I get home
Sometimes when I put him to bed he'll practice whistling for a few minutes, but doesn't bother calling me because I've made it a point to be very strict about bedtime. I live with my folks/brothers for a while, and they tell me that even when they're home he doesn't make a sound until I get there. Also, for the most part the females are quieter than the males, and I don't actually know if mine is a boy or girl until results are back in a few weeks but he's a spitting image of his dad, a pied coloration

>the shit
Cockatiels poop often, I'd say once every 30 minutes or so when he's on me. Birds (for the most part) don't pee, and when my cockatiel poops on things it's incredibly easy to clean up as long as it doesn't get squished and rubbed into stuff. I personally just keep paper towels around all the time, and when he poops somewhere I rip off a small piece, pick it up in said piece, then toss in the trash and it's like it never even happened. He also does make an effort to not poop on me even though I haven't tried to potty-train him whatsoever, so it's even easier to deal with when 90% of the time his poop either hits a tile floor or the plastic mat under my desk

>diet
Ideal diet for them is pellets, with seeds as snacks. Stuff in petstores are good as far as I can tell, though my little guy is picky and won't eat pellets so he's been eating a cockatiel seed mix without sunflower seeds (The most unhealthy of the bunch)

>husbandry
I got my little guy by speaking with the local avian vet about wanting to adopt a bird, and from there being introduced to a local cockatiel breeder. Also, Facebook groups help a TON, especially when it comes to questions from new/potential new owners
>>
>>2267576
>If you work a 9 to 5 job, are birds a good option?

Most birds are social animals that live in flocks, and being alone to them is a lot like solitary confinement for humans...pretty torturous.

People do it because they never learned about the social structure of the birds they buy, or they simply don't care.

You can offset this issue by allowing them to have a partner, but they'll be harder to tame since they'll look to each other for companionship than you or your family.

So a few weeks ago my tiel had a night fright and lost a few blood feathers. I had a minor panic attack but the 3 feathers we found that fell out came out whole and there was no excess bleeding. However a few days ago she was making these squawking sounds out of no where. She only does this when preening, so my question is that if a bird is moulting and they preen can they irritate themselves or could it be a broken blood feather that didn't bleed but hasn't come out? Do broken blood feather come out on their own? If so how long would that take?
Tldr: tiel lost blood feathers a while ago, started squawking recently, could it be a broken blood feather?

(I cleaned up the poop on his perch after I took this picture)

I bought him at Petsmart.
The first day he didn't speak, but in the morning he started to chirp and move around more.

It's his third day and so far he hasn't eaten things from hand (like millet sprays etc.)
when I put the treat on the ground, he went down and started eating.

Right now he's listening to music. Can't tell whether or not he's ok with it, he isn't puffed up but he isn't moving either.
A larger cage is on its way so for now he's in a travel cage. It's coming tomorrow hopefully.

Not that anon, but I switched my petstore budgies from a water bowl to a bottle a year ago and they caught on really quick. Tap on the ball bearing a few times to wet it if they don't seem to get it at first.

yeah, when he was in the cage display, he had a water bottle like that, I saw him drinking out of it a few times when he came here
Also whenever I clean his bottle daily, I check to see if water is coming out.

He was able to take a single step when I held out a stick, so that's a good sign.
I'll feed him veggies and fruits when he eventually becomes comfortable with my hand.

Okay, just got these two. They are blue and white opaline, but here's the thing: the people told me they are peachfaced lovebirds. I don't think they are. I think they are Fischer's lovebirds. Am I wrong? Can I get some help? Do they look hybrid at all? Their white heads make their eye rings very hard to see, but they are definitely there.

Could I get some advice? my girl keeps flying away from me every time she sees a mirror, I think because she's my only bird. I can't stay around her 24/7, and it gets really annoying when I do try to spend time with her or I try to put her back in her cage, and she flies back to the mirror. What should I do?

It's either constipated or masturbating... I'd listen to >>2270027 and check the cage for droppings. How old is your bird?

First off, just remove the mirror and bribe her to stay with you more often with treats like millet. Second, your girl is actually a boy, judging by his bright blue cere (nose).

Currently living with partner's family, this happened a few hours ago:
>get home today and check on my lorikeet
>astonishingly, I find his food dish full of birb seed/dry fruit instead of his lorikeet dry mix (a powder) and his water dish is overflowing and has fruit bits in it
>get fucking livid b/c straight up bird seed and dry fruit isn't a lorikeet diet, I reserve that as a treat
>also because I don't like people feeding my pet without my knowing
>rant off at partner to vent, I suspect his mother as it's something she'd do
>he agrees but is defensive because I am ranting at him at mach II
>he doesn't understand how someone can be so mad about an animal

>later turns out it was the social worker that helps his dad in the mornings
His dad has cerebral palsy. Worker thought it was too hot and my birb's dishes were empty (I change food/water each day but lorikeet bathes in the water sometimes)
>told the dad I was sorry for him hearing my mad rant and I did appreciate the concern
>told him not to let the workers change his food, but they can change his water all they like

Reason I suspected the mother was because she does not know how to care for animals. She has an old golden retriever that she once overfed to obesity (apparently before I was in the picture), and more recently allowed the same dog to become underfed and emaciated because she still doesn't know how to feed him.
He also has severe tooth decay and she only took him to the vet when we continued to rant to her about it (she kept telling us to stop stressing her out when we brought it up). His teeth were loose and wobbly and stunk, he ended up needing heaps of teeth out, vet told us he would have to have been in immense pain for a long time for it to get that bad.
Same dog now has skin rash and they think it's "just old age."

>tfw after all this dog bullshit she said my bird was fat

Thanks for letting me soapbox, sorry that got a bit off-track and not birb related.
>>
>>2271974
That's a cute birb. People think owning an animal makes them a beast Master. My mother in law refused to put her cats on a diet or at least feed them at certain times. Instead she had a huge bowl that she would fill up and let them eat whenever they wanted. Surprise surprise she has 4 obese cats now, and yet she laughed at me when i explained that birds shouldn't eat seeds alone. I cant wait for her dog to finally get lost because she wont train it to stay and wont put it on a tie out when she lets it out.
>>
>>2271978
Oh it's fucking infuriating. When we had to transition the dog to the new vet-recommended dry food (from the cheap supermarket logs of which he only used to get only 400g a day), she immediately gave him a full serving of both foods instead of a increasing percentage of new food per day (as the vet had said). She also wouldn't feed him the meat log in the mornings because "oh he never gets log in the mornings" and would just give him a full bowl of the new food.
When partner and I tried to take control of the feedings during this transition week she would get ultra mad. Because apparently only she can feed the dog.

Fuck it feels good to vent about this, doesn't it?
>>

So, I am looking through google right now but I also want your guys input on this matter. We rescued a lovebird from a woman who is an absolute retard with animals, only to find that she is selling more birds because she doesn't want them. The one we have is a female, and the one she is selling is also a female. We don't know the age of them, but they both seem to be matured lovebirds. Will they get along? We wouldn't want to have to find another home for a bird.

Google is your friend and all buuut...

Interact with him through the cage's bars, if it accepts treats from your hand, target train it with a chopstick. I strongly advise buying a clicker, it works wonders with mine.

Eventually, you should be able to target him to different places, your hands included.

Don't rush anything and be patient.

Pellets with fresh fruits and vegetables, though tiels are notoriously picky about those, keep leaving some in his cage, even if he doesn't eat them at first.
I'd assume your is store-bought, so you might have to transition the seeds out of his diet, you can keep them as treats, though.
>>
>>2272159
If they don't get along, just keep them in separate cages.

Anyone have any experience with pet store birds? Maybe you couldnt find anywhere else or an impulse buy. How long did it take them tame the bird when you got it?
I remember when i was like 12 and coudnt find a breeder and even if i did my mom wouldn't have let me go anyway so i got a parakeet from petco. He would step onto my finger and he was really cool. Rip mario

So my mom rescued a cockatiel yesterday from some cats. It lost some feathers off its back. We bought a cage, food and a cuttlebone the same day.

Looked around to see if anyone was searching for a lost bird. Nothing. It was eating and drinking. Didn't huff at us as much when we found it.
I was looking up vet number to call when it started thrashing about. I should've just taken it to any vet right away. I was gonna call it Sasha.

On a related note, every time I hear about someone else's bird dying or getting sick it makes me very worried about the same thing happening to my cockatiel. The thought of losing my little guy is horrifying to me.

I just came back from the vet today, and my <1 year old budgie has a mild case of face mites, and has to be quarantined for the next month while he's treated, since I have 3 other budgie birbs.
I feel bad because I just started taking him out a lot more, and now I feel like he'll be left out. How can I make the little guy feel included?
Feel even more bad because I had to throw out his favorite ladder because the mites might have burrowed into it. He's been moping all day, so I at least cheered him up a bit by giving him millet.
Should I invest in plastic toys, since they're generally easier to clean?

Can someone post pictures of plucked feathers? (Not a bird who has plucked, but the actual feathers that have been plucked). I have a rescue quaker (neglected, not abused) who had plucked a decent bit before we got her in April, and we're worried that she might be plucking again, but it's hard to tell since she already has bare spots. I've read that plucked feathers will look more mangled than regularly molted ones, but I haven't been able to find any pics of what plucked feathers actually look like to compare with the ones in her cage. Thankfully, there's not very many feathers in her cage, and they don't look particularly mangled to me, but I want to be sure.

Alright so I live with my wife and since we are both infertile take care of animals. She works at petco and I take care of our cat, dog, two fish, and three ferrets during the day. So I am home 24/7.

Now we have been interested in getting a single cockatiel but there are some questions we have. First of all will it be okay to walk around a cat and an old dog who sleeps all day? The cat is fine with both the ferrets and the dog so it shouldn't be a problem right?

Next up on the list is when we get a cage for it would it be okay to let the cage door open for most of the day? I don't intend for it to be out the same time the ferrets are. Will it bite cords or sockets? I can keep my eye on it most of the time since as I said I'm home 24/7.

Beyond that is there anything I should definitely know? I think I got the diet already laid out and toys too. Will it be fine wandering into rooms if say I let it out of my vision to watch a YouTube video or something?

I plan to talk and pet it most of the day
>>

Don't trust a cat with a bird. Cats are naturally aggressive, even if you think they get along you will regret it when the bird dies from an infection from a scratch or bite.
>>
>>2275051
>>2275101
Also don't be surprised when it kills your ferrets. Why are catfags so irresponsible? Please don't get a pet bird just to make it bait for your shitty cat, that is cruel.
>>
>>2274728
I've two birds and they both take short naps once or twice a day.
I don't think there's any problem with that.
>>
>>2275102
Right because that was my plan all along. To simply feed a live bird to my cat.
>>
>>2274728
>>2275133
Mine take one or two naps a day too. They're supposed to get the 10-12 hours and they don't usually get that much (undisturbed) at night time so they make up for it during the day.
>>
>>2275141
Your plan was to let the bird and the cat roam the house, which is the same as feeding the bird to the cat.
>>
>>2275143
No my plan was to ask strangers on a Mongolian finger painting site to see if it was a possible thing that could happen. To ease what ever slight worry I will say I will not do it.
>>
>>2275051

Cats, and ferrets, are predators that eat birds. I wouldn't bring a bird into that circus. All it takes is ONE mistake on part of the cat, or the ferrets, and you've just killed your bird.

It's irresponsible to bring a bird into that environment, dude, so don't.
>>
Can someone give me some general advice on budgies? I've recently gotten two of them, they have a nice cage food and water plus things to play with and climb on. So I was just wondering on any specific things to keep them safe and healthy birbs.
>>
Hey, I'm the Rosella guy.
One of my birds (specifically this one >>2254284
) has a weird habit. Once or twice a day he'll come to me and start making a continuous chirping sound, completely different to his usual chattering a whistling. When he does that, he seems to like getting his beak and cheeks petted, but he also stays in some kind of "mount me right now" pose if I pet him. This doesn't make sense since the breeder said that he's a male and even if he wasn't he's around 6 months old. Then again, it does look 100% as if he wanted to get the sex.

Any idea what could this mean?

My tiel makes these really loud screams (im assuming its a flock call) for no reason sometimes even when im talking with him a bit far away. Im going to a bird expo this Saturday and i was thinking maybe getting him a friend would quiet him down. Would that work or no? Google was no help
>>
>>2276388
If your tiel is like mine, he's calling for you because he wants to be closer to you (ie. on shoulder or the like)
Mine is crazy attached to me though, so I don't know how correct my guess is

And from everything I've gathered, getting a friend for a bird is an absolute crapshoot if it makes them quieter or louder
>>
>>2276425
The thing is though im in the process of trying to tame his since i got him from a pet store

If you're still taming him I would probably wait to get him a friend because taming him will be much harder with that distraction. He may be bored, he may want you to be closer, or he may be doing it just because it gets a reaction. Or he could just be a noisy bird.

Just keep trying, like holding it between cage bars or something. My budgie took almost half a year before she dared to take food from me without hesitation. Get it used to your presence by staying near the cage.

Yeah he has a big enough cage and a few toysm ive only every seen him play with them once and whenever im busy i play some music for him. Idk if hes screaming though im gonna video him doing that and upload it somewhere so some could tell me what hes doing
>>
>>2277276

Birds naturally get noisy in the morning, in the evening, and sometimes at mid-day. Morning noise is pretty much to wake everyone up to start looking for food. Mid-day will be noise to gather everybody back up for some grooming, or a nap, before going back out for food. Evening noise is to gather everybody up for the roost until the next morning. In between those times they make contact call noise, which is a just a simple call out for any bird nearby to verify that a) they're not alone and b) that nobody see's any threats.

Screaming and getting loud is just natural for them, as it helps keep the flock alert and alive, and serves as a form of expression as well.
