I am single and live on my own in my house, and I plan to adopt a cat soon. I want one that is comfortable without access to very many rooms(two rooms) and is not destructive(chewing on things or scratching things) and is affectionate(sleeps with me, sits on my desk or on my lap)
Any recommendations of what kind of cat I should adopt?
An adult or elderly cat, not a kitten.

I had this in mind, yes.
It is better to rescue an adult cat that might not get a home. Kittens are in high demand, cats are not.
But what kind?

Not a "smart" cat, mean as that sounds. I had a Siamese mix girl, and she was super smart, but she snuck outside once and ever since then, she completely knocked me off my feet trying to get out again. She was destructive and never wanted to cuddle. The best bet for a cat, always, would be a standard shorthair cat from a shelter you trust to be honest about the cat's personality. Maybe a cat in a foster home, and one who is established to not like other cats so that they are not lonely.
don't bother looking for breeds- at a shelter you won't have any idea what they are, anyways.
visit them more than once, and get a feel for their personality.
