Turtles are pretty shitty pets for your average person, yet they are frequently sold in pet stores.

Common species like RES get pretty big and need massive tanks as adults. They also require very clean water and a varied diet. People never expect their growth and effort though, proceed to keep them in tiny tanks while feeding them only store bought pellets. This shitty care then frequently leads to all kinds of health issues like shell rot, pyramiding, vitamin deficiencies, etc.

And not to forget their lifespans. A turtle could be a comittment for the rest of your life.

To add to your discussion, my exotic pet is crappy in a way but people like. My mudskipper is far from crappy, but the challenges that comes with finding them are. They have odd requirements that make both easier and harder to keep. They're easier because:
>Water quality isn't a big deal for them.
>Fucking easiest fish to accept any food, throw a marble in his tank and he'll chase it down.
>Filtration isn't that needed

But there are maintenance issues that can be hard for them.

In my personal opinion is, if you want something odd that acts like a golden retriever mixed with frog in the body of a fish, and will impress your friends no matter what, can thrive to a point where it comes a chore to kill it, with a low budget? Get a mudskipper.

But, they're so hard to come by. Mine was a fluke accident where is was just rushed improvisation that just happened to work out in the end. There's no market for them, and keeping them has so much weird requirements, most hobbyists would think you're nuts. And to top that, if you're planning on getting a mudskipper, it'd be months to even years until you find someone to fill an empty tank with only five gallons of water in. There's no demand for landwalking fish, so you have to be real dedicated to owning one.

I have a RES, shes 10 and I keep her in a 75 gallon, soon she'll be in a pond out back. They're not that hard to keep as they're pretty hardy creatures. Very interesting to watch.

They're big, but slim. I have a Timber Wolf that I've had since it was a puppy. It's 4 years old and 185 pounds. It looks a LOT bigger than it weighs.

Also, shittiest exotic trend pet, right there. Sugar Gliders. Ask anyone that's ever had them, and the vaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast majority will tell you how they got rid of them within a year.

They really aren't hard at all and incredibly hardy to many shit conditions (I have an 11 year old female in a 90 gal)

The main problem with the average keeper is that they think they're like fish in that they're expendable, eat cheap store food, and perhaps the worst "they only grow as big as the tank", allowing many to be stupidly frugal and keep them in like a 10-40 gal for their entire lives with no strong filters, heaters and UVB because "it's expensive" therefore unnecessary.

Then cue them dumping it into a lake or something and proceed to fuck other native turtles or fish
