So I grew up with an Amazon parrot, and I have chickens and quail now. I am reading up on parrot training and interaction because it's been so long since I had a parrot and yesterday I picked up 3 for free over craigslist. A blue Indian ringneck and 2 lovebirds. They are all very shy and I want to work slowly with them to make them friendly enough to hold without them being terrified. Any tips on that or reference sites or books, I would appreciate.

Other than that, I wanted to ask opinions on one of the lovebirds. She has a messed up beak, like an old injury or perhaps she was born that way. She can eat and drink fine and she even climbs and preens with it. Do you think I need to take her to the vet to evaluate it? Or is it okay as long as she is acting normal? The people did not tell me one of the birds was special needs until I got there, so I'm a bit concerned.

No, it's not okay. Her beak needs to be trimmed. BADLY. And all of the birds need to go to the vet. Don't tell me you weren't planning on taking them.

No, I wasn't. They seem very healthy. I don't bring healthy animals to the vet honestly. I know some disagree with that, but I have a small farm and it's just how we do things.
Thank you for your opinion on her beak. I will bring her to the vet ASAP.

The thing with birds is that they don't generally show any signs of illness until they are ready to drop dead. By the time you know something is wrong it is too late.

I'm familiar with that. That is a good point. Since I am taking the one lovebird for sure, I suppose I will go ahead and take them all just to be sure.

I do see what you mean about it needing trimming, but do you think this would heal and regrow properly over time? It looks to be like it will always be a gaping hole to her sinus cavity.

That picture looks a lot worst than the first one, but it is blurry so it's hard to tell.

It probably won't ever be normal. The trimming will help though. Also provide her with things to chew on like cuddlebone and toys. That will help keep it naturally trimmed after she gets it trimmed by a professional.

Yeah, sorry about the blurriness. Here is a better one.
I know the vet will tell me more of what I need to know, but I just kinda wanted some input from experienced bird owners since most of the vets around here don't even do birds regularly. I'm not sure how trustworthy their opinions will be. I'd like to cross reference different thoughts on it.

I feel so sorry for that bird, man. Looks very prone to infection. Have an avian / specialist exotics vet evaluate it and then evaluate the quality of life left for the poor guy.

fucking yes! what are you waiting for??
>>
>>2235946
Yeah she definitely has a deformed beak. It looks like she got injured a while ago and no one tried to help. Or it is possible she was just born that way.

chill out. it looks like she's lived with it a long time. she's not in distress. it's not a life and death matter. the person was just seeking some validation. at least they're asking questions. they could have just been a shithead and kept the bird without consulting anyone whatsoever. clearly they're going now so calm your tits.
