Hi /an/, what's this turtle's species? A friend just got it and I want to give them advice so it doesn't die (they've had a baby tortoise before that passed away shortly after they got it)

They're just very misinformed. I've talked to them before about proper care of different animals and seemed interested enough. Want to try doing it again with their new tortoise

I'm shitty at identifying from crappy pics, but my first guess would be an African tortoise.
Are the scales that run around the edge smooth or kind of separate/"spiky"?

Shell pattern matches these very well.
If its not a match, they're close enough to track down the correct species once you get a better pic.
