For some reason seeing a Tufted Tit-Tyrant on /an/ blew my mind. Super-obscure bird unless you live in the Andes.
>>2224872
That's LITERALLY the best name I've ever heard
>>2224872
I do live in the andes, but that's an anairetes fernandezianus.
From the island robinson crusoe, obscure subspecies of an obscure bird.

Are there any leel birbs like these that can be kept as pets?
What bird species is that little green one? So cute!
Look tasty to me.

Our pack of outdoor cats certainly think so, and often bring their many and various new little friends home with them.

Well, how about that. You're right, anon.
The pale eye threw me off. I thought A. parulus was the only tit-tyrant with pale eyes. I have learned something today.
>>2225119
>does it have whiskers
Yep, sort of. Birds that catch and eat flying insects have modified whiskery feathers around their mouths to help funnel bugs in. They're called "rictal bristles".
>>2224881
There are way better bird names. Seems like there were some super-creative ornithologists back in the day. Tropical hummingbirds, man...Check out the names there sometime.

This literally happened a few years ago. Fledglings were ready to leave the nest and one already did but was hopping around in the garden. I decided to make lunch and than eat it outside so I could watch over these guys. But when I returned I encountered your pic related. Clenched between the jaws of a cat, screaming but there was no way for me to save it anymore. It still hurts but at least I managed to take some cute pics of this unfortunate little one before this shitty cat got to it.
>>2225082
oh hey its false flagger at it again!
>>2225451
Holy shit you never see their legs. I didn't even realize they had fuzzy feet. Oh my fuck.
>>2225086
Superb Fairy Wren, though we call them blue wren.
Mum and dad made their garden exclusively of native trees and plants, and dad has regularly shot non-native birds and feral cats (sorry guys, country Australia. He's an excellent shot though, nothing suffers). The result is a haven for these guys and other native birds, with birdbaths and heaps of nesting spots.
I have so many fond memories of spending time in the garden with these guys around. They are beautiful to look at, have a nice song and are peaceful.
It's spring in Australia, and I'll be visiting mum and dad this weekend. I look forward to reading a book in the sun with these little bastards hopping around and singing.

/an/ Puzzle Corner! How many birds can YOU count in this picture?
>>2228386
TY anon. Have another favorite.
These guys are known colloquially as 'Willie Wagtails', as they have a habit of waving their tail back and forth when standing.
They have a very distinctive call that my mother says sounds like they're saying 'sweet pretty creature!' She heard that from her grandmother.
They loved being around our horses, and would sit on their backs and around their legs, where they would snatch up insects scared into flight by the larger animals.
They would also pull hair directly off our horses when they were molting. The horses did not seem to mind at all.
They nested in our stables, and would chatter angrily if we go close, but they literally had a nest in the same spot for all my childhood, so they clearly had it pretty sweet. I made sure to stay away from their nest.

>angry eyebrows
Everyone go home. The best bird has been posted.
>>2228282
My grandparents had a small house in the middle of bushland near a dam and every spring there would be hundreds of those little guys and other native birds. It was amazing to go down there every year.
>>2224803
My brother had the nicest little lovebird. I went insane one night and held it under the tap until it drowned. It uh, I uh...brought it up half way through, trying to change my mind...but uh..it was coughing....it already had inhaled water. ..and so I finished the job.
>>2228932
Kill yourself. Seriously.
>>2228932
>I went insane
Could you please elaborate?
Genuinely curious.
>>2228815

Some of these little birds have really brutal sex lives, both for male and female.
This is a New Zealand Stitchbird, or hihi.
It is common for extrapair males to engage in forceful copulations (rape) with females. The sexually aggressive male is often why so many females expend so much extra energy, which may be contributing to their declining numbers.
>>2228964
Here is a female hihi.
