How do companies make dwarfing rootstocks for fruit trees?
I understand the concept of a dwarfing rootstock--but how do they make them?
they either go with a double graft or a genetically compatible rootstock that's cultivated to limit the amount of nutrients the graft receives.

>cultivated to limit the amount of nutrients the graft receives
How do they do that?
>>2219568
it's a domesticated rootstock, it's been selectively bred for it.

How do they reproduce the rootstocks?
I thought apple plants didn't grow true from seed?
>>2219732
they're just trees domesticated for their rootstock rather than their fruit, the main part is trimmed off before they're shipped to dealers.
apples don't grow true from seed in terms of fruit, that's irrelevant if you're growing them for mid sections or roots, their 'taste' is going to be grafted on top of them anyway.

So, the nature of the root systems of apple trees grow true from seed, but the nature of the fruit does not?
>>2219778
it doesn't work for fruit because apples have to be cross-pollinated, most varieties aren't self-fertile, so the seeds are going to be hybrids that'll likely taste like shit.
that doesn't matter if they're grown for rootstocks, you don't eat those anyway.
