Can you identify this for me?

I found it in my backyard thinking it was a seed but it turns out it's a caccoon (at least I think it is). It keeps moving around furiously with whatever is inside trying to get out. I'm thinking of maybe cracking it open to see what it is but I'm too afraid that I might kill it.

Got mine from the dollar store as well. They larva will make a cocoon inside and turn into a small moth that lives for a few days. Lightly mist it every now and then and it will be okay.
