My dog always follows me around when we're at home, but doesn't seem to want any affection; when I slowly reach in to pet him he usually turns his head away. He always seems to be wanting something though (he whines a lot) despite I keep his dishes full and take him on 30-minute walks four times daily.
What are your comments on this behavior?

He wants to put the red dog dick down your ass

Maybe its just his head. Or you may be are drawing a paradox from two behaviors where there isn't one.

Mine does the same, do you have another dog? it looks like they get a bit posessive like that for some reason. Which breed?

Usually when my dog seems like he wants something but avoids getting pet, it's because he wants to show me something. Try following yours when he does that, he'll probably lead you to whatever he wants. In my case it's nearly always the water bowl or the garden door.

I agree with this.
Last night my pup was laying in front of the wall unit sighing and whining. I thought he was bored or needed to pee so we played outside for a bit but when we came back he just did the same thing. He even makes kind of a low growl sound like "hmmmm" to get my attention sometimes. Anyway, I finally figured out he lost something and couldn't reach it...got my flashlight and discovered a small piece of his bone was under there. Pulled it out, and he ran straight to his bed to chew it
