Just curious, but is it necessarily true that dogs till bond more closely to you if you get them as puppies? I've had my 7 year old lab for almost 7 months, and he acts as if I've had him his whole life.
Sorry for sideways pic.

Anon, please don't do this. I want a nice, civil thread.

Sorry to hear that. I hope whatever was bothering it eventually passed.

this was my dog when he a puppy, he will be 3 years old next january, but the reason i got a puppy was i thought there would be a more stronger bond than getting an older one, here is the most unflattering picture of have of him

Nope there's no difference. If the dog is naturally aloof, it will be an aloof dog whether or not you get it as a puppy. You get a magnet dog, it will be a magnet dog no matter what age and who is caring for it. Dr Emily Weiss did some study that showed the strength of a bond based on age was actually in the person's head, as in YOU may bond more with a puppy (and this seemed to happen more to people who believe puppy bond is stronger) but the dog doesn't give a fuck.
I haven't found it makes a difference so I generally prefer to adopt older dogs that are already potty trained or at least mostly there.
My current dog was almost 2 when I got him 2 years ago. He was mostly potty trained and I had him fully potty trained within a couple months. I'm still working on other training things like not jumping on people unless invited, but he is making great progress. He is just as bonded to my husband and I as any dog we got as a puppy if not more since we took him from an abusive situation
They don't bond more but you have a better chance of training them in good habits since no one else has had a chance fuck them up yet

Puppies are easier to train but as far as the bond, an older dog will bond to you just as much as a puppy would.

Isn't this basically a nature versus nurture thread? I doubt you'll get a clear answer.
it shouldn't make a difference. if anything, my rescue was quit to bond with me once he understand im the reason he's not in doggo jail anymore. super grateful and adorable.

it annoys me how dogs cry when they are away from people. why can't they be happy without constant babysitting?
I have two dogs, one was adopted because his past owners couldn't take care of him because of their new baby and one we had from a pup. We got the adopted one when he was about 6 years (he's the same age as my other dog, both about 10 now). Adopted pupper loves n bonds more than the other, but they're both generally big cuddly wimps!
