The Nicobar pigeon (Caloenas nicobarica) is a pigeon found on small islands and in coastal regions from the Nicobar Islands, east through the Malay Archipelago, to the Solomons and Palau. It is the only living member of the genus Caloenas and the closest living relative of the extinct dodo.

The spotted green pigeon or Liverpool pigeon (Caloenas maculata) is a species of pigeon of unknown provenance which is most likely extinct. It was first mentioned and described in 1783 by John Latham, who claimed to have seen two specimens and a drawing depicting the bird. The taxonomic relationships of the bird were long obscure, and early writers suggested many different possibilities, though the idea that it was related to the Nicobar pigeon (C. nicobarica) prevailed, and it was therefore placed in the same genus, Caloenas.

The Rodrigues solitaire (Pezophaps solitaria) is an extinct, flightless bird that was endemic to the island of Rodrigues, east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean. Genetically within the family of pigeons and doves, it was most closely related to the also extinct dodo of Mauritius, the two forming the subfamily Raphinae. The Nicobar pigeon is their closest living genetic relative.
Rodrigues solitaires grew to the size of swans, and demonstrated pronounced sexual dimorphism.

Not your everyday sort of pigeon but close enough.

The tooth-billed pigeon (Didunculus strigirostris), also known as the manumea, is a large pigeon found only in Samoa. It is the only living species of genus Didunculus. A related extinct species, the Tongan tooth-billed pigeon (Didunculus placopedetes), is only known from subfossil remains in several archeological sites in Tonga.[2][3] The tooth-billed pigeon is the national bird of Samoa and featured on the 20 tālā bills and the 50 sene pieces of the 2008/2011 series.

The Victoria crowned pigeon (Goura victoria) is a large, bluish-grey pigeon with elegant blue lace-like crests, maroon breast and red iris. It is part of a genus of three unique very large, ground-dwelling pigeons native to the New Guinea region. The bird may be easily recognized by the unique white tips on its crests and by its deep 'whooping' sounds made while calling. Its name commemorates the British monarch Queen Victoria.

The western crowned pigeon, also known as the common crowned pigeon or blue crowned pigeon (Goura cristata) is a large, blue-grey pigeon with blue lacy crests over the head and dark blue mask feathers around its eyes. Both sexes are almost similar but males are often larger than females. It is on average 70 cm (28 in) long and weighs 2,100 grams (4.6 lbs)

Thank you for showing me there's more to pigeons than park friends. These are beautiful and fascinating. I'd not known they exist unless you shared them.

Its me the poster of those.
I find rare and exotic pigeons an interesting ideal to say the least. The fact we associate them with being so common makes us forget how rare some of their close relatives actually are. The Liverpool pigeon I find quite interesting too because of its very enigmatic status. Only one specimen has ever been found, and a small number of people have seen one. They are presumed extinct- but there was so little evidence at the time of its discovery that it was told to simply be an anomaly of the nicobar pigeon. Dna tests later showed us that this was indeed a close relative of the nicobar pigeon, and the two closest relatives of the dodo in which we have specimens to analyze. Seriously though, it still surprizes me that dodo is so closesly related to these birds. All the years as a child where I never put 2 and 2 together.

That is surprising. I've wondered if they are related to doves somehow; they seem similar to me.

Many thanks again; my world's a little bigger now. I appreciate it.

Have a great evening!

Another member of the subfamily Caloenas. Unlike the Liverpool Pigeon the Nicobar, we only have fossils of these birds as far as I know.

The Kanaka pigeon, also called the great green pigeon or greater maned pigeon, is extinct. It was probably hunted to extinction by the early settlers of New Caledonia and Tonga around 2500 years ago. It was described from subfossil remains found at the Pindai Caves of New Caledonia. The specific epithet is a latinisation of kanaka, the name of the native Melanesian people of New Caledonia. It was about 25% larger than its closest living relative, the Nicobar pigeon.

Doves are indeed pigeons. They belong to the order Columbidae.

I'll also mention that there are no doves in the subfamilies I previously mentioned, which make those birds a tad less related to doves than they are to regular park friends.

It is actually kind of retarded. Some breeding should be illegal: bred animals exist which suffer from all kinds of malfunctions and diseases thanks to breeding.
>>
>>2197423
I like the look of their feet and how they come in all sorts of different colours.
Why do they do so well in cities, anyway?
>>
>>2200729
Ample places for roosting, breed fast, adaptable to garbage(despite the sick and pigeons often seen), little predators, etc. Our American pigeons, even though they most look wild, are semi domesticated. Which is pretty interesting. Two rock looking doves can breed and come out with a white or oddly colored pigeon, which is a clear sign of domestication in them.

Pigeons and house sparrows are the most common birds I've seen in a city, both of which werw introduced. I have seen the occasional falcon or turkey vulture but they can quite rare. The falcons in cities seemed to just come from what those that had been raised towards the city and know there is plenty of pigeons, as well as many places to get away from people despite the crowds when you have wings. I've seen a tit here and there but its still very rare.
