More specifically, it's the exoskeleton left over from a cicada pupa. The adult crawled out through the slit in the back and flew off.
The exoskeleton can still cling to stuff. It's fun to put them on things.

The cicada invasions are awesome. I think the last big one in IL was maybe 2009 or something around then and when you would drive through parking lots in parks and shit you would just hear them crunching under the tires. Plus it's an awesome sound when they hit the windshield at 50mph.
I wouldn't want to ride a motorcycle without a full face helmet during those summers though.
