This is a deer thread. Post deer and talk about deer. Similar animals like moose are allowed too.
Bambi is a good book for deer fans, btw. It's much more realistic and somber than the books. Bambi's mom slowly begins to ignore him more and more after he's weaned. Faline has a twin brother and she is Bambi's cousin.

Had maypops come up randomly on my property this year. (They're a type of passion fruit native to the southeast U.S.).
I haven't been able to try a single one yet- deer always eat them.
Going to put some tomato cages with fencing around a couple this weekend, see if I can get at least one ripe one to try the taste.

Typo. I meant the book is more somber than the Disney film.

I always forget this is in the deep freezer.
Been meaning to make some jerky for like 6 months.

>eating wild animals
Sick.
>>2194943
That's one of the comfoest things I've read this year
>>2194953
>cattle raised by the hundreds in a muddy stock yard the size of a football field.
>chickens packed so tightly into a breeding barn that there's literally not enough room to walk through.
>all of them pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones.
That's where your bigmac and chicken tenders come from.
I actually feel sorry for you.

Vegetarian here. I straight up don't like the taste of meat, the only meat I've ever felt curious about trying is venison. How is it? it looks so good.
>>2194965
The "gamey"-ness is very different than store bought beef.
Its hard to describe. I've had wild boar that was so gamey it tasted rotten.
But with venison its usually more of an " aged cheese" type of flavoring.
In a burger/steak you might not even notice, but with jerky its always present.
Its also a very lean meat.
Mutton also has the gamey-ness, and is sometimes easier to find in a restaurant, depending on where you live. But deer tastes better than mutton- more of a sweeter meat I'd say.

Moose are cervids, silly you. That means deer family by the way.
I like deer with teeth. Musk deer have teeth too but they aren't in the deer family cervidae.
I find deer to be very badass and worthy of respect. They're scary fuckers when they're mad, and for all the reputation they have of being timid I have encountered wild deer and felt very afraid. In awe of their size and power and the fact they decided not to just knock my ass out or try to kill me despite being in their space.
And elk calls are some of the coolest/creepiest sounds ever.
I wish I had more pics of deer.
I see white tail every night.
If I DONT see at least one on the drive home I think something is wrong and check weather reports for tornado warnings or if a volcano exploded or something.

I was out for a walk one evening, heard a crash in the brush.
Looked over and saw a 10 point running full speed straight toward me.
Wasn't sure what to do.
He turned slightly and ran by me about 20 feet away.
Then I saw a couple of the neighbors dogs come running up behind it. Dogs were bored already and just went home.
But that deer could have turned my relaxing evening walk into a really long night at the hospital if he had wanted to.

What kind of dogs? Interesting the deer didn't just attack them unless they were larger/wolf-looking ones
>>2194990
One was a larger lab mix, one was just some dingo looking mutt. Then some little terrier mix came up behind them.
I'm sure the deer could have done some serious damage to them- but he just had to go for a short jog and ditch them in the woods.
Since I last posted I ran into "town" to get some lunch.
Saw a yearling crossing the road about 2 miles from here. Usually only see them in the evening-

get out
These cunts are everywhere in Nara and Miyajima, they descend from the mountains every morning for free snacks and back rubs.
Anyone see that PBS documentary about the guy who bonded with wild mule deer?
There's a mother and two fawns that live in the woods behind my house.
They come into my backyard every other day or so.
Once the mother even came around to the front and ate out of my bird feeder.

Venison tastes very sweet to me. I am not much a fan of beef aside from steak but deer burgers and steaks have a sweet flavor. Moose too. I have yet to find anyone aside from the above anon to agree with it on me though. I've eaten sheep, goat, snake, kangaroo, raccoon, opossum, squirrel, rabbit, coyote and wolf(pro tip: fuckin don't), wild boar, etc.
I'm rather plain with my meat and food in general. I don't care too much or marinating or spices. Nothing could salvage wolf and coyote though. I'm waiting on horse but it's in jerky form from Russia so I don't expect much. It was just cheaper than fucking around Canada looking for horsemeat.

Not impressed, they're just a giraffe scaled logarithmically

Have some real free range chicken eggs.
"Americana's" lay the Easter egg colored ones. Each chicken lays a different color. Most of the time you can tell what color egg they'll lay by the color of their legs.

My wife is Russian. She says horse meat is common there and was surprised we don't have it here in the U.S.

I apologize to OP for going on a non deer tangent.
Here is my penance. Couple.houses down from friends house in a neighbor's yard. There's a Fawn there too, kind of hard to see.
This happened five years ago. I was sitting at my computer and I saw these fuckers from the corner of my eye through the window, scared the shit out of me, but I got a bunch of nice pics. Too bad my phone and hence camera was shit at the time.

Was a harsh winter but they found some food around our house.
>>2195320
This one watched for a long time and jumped up once when I think it noticed me and then calmed back down right away when it seemed to think it didn't see what it thought it saw or something.
>>2194935
I like deer.
>>2194979
What the hell is that vampire doing out in the daylight?
>>2195260
I was absolutely disgusted when I learned that the reason why all the eggs you buy in stores in the U.S. are solid white is because they are bleached.
(That might have changed since I first learned about it though, there is a lot of pressure on TV these days for free range and "non artificial" foods)
But my family is dirt poor, it's either buy the cheap inhumane shit, or starve.

Are there any kinds of plants you can buy in stores in the U.S. to put into your landscaping that can feed deer during lean times?
I'd love to encourage local wildlife to come to my property (when I eventually get my own house) and to support them without resorting to hand feeding them and associating humans with food.
>>2194935
Those tall goats are very chubby.
>>2196838
Umm, like anything.
Plant yourself a garden if you want to help out the deer, you might even get to eat something if you act fast.
I have wild passion fruit, haven't gotten a single one this season because the deer come through every night and eat anything close to ripe.
They'll strip pears and apples if they can reach them.
Any type of grass.
Winter rye (a type of grass) is popular ground cover out here when everything is out of season for soil conservation.
