Redpill me on chinchillas. What are they like as pets?

Basically a wild squirrel that is incredibly sensitive to warm temperature. Lots of work. Not recommended unless you really REALLY love chinchillas.

Poop a lot, require a lot of attention. But they're super soft and friendly, I'd say. The sand baths they take are fun to watch.

Degus are less hassle yet similar & much smaller. Big personality, and the live for around 8 years!
Still shit a lot though.
Chinchillas are cool, but can be a pain in the ass

Moved on from hamsters and now onto chinchillas eh?
So are chinchillas like rats, in that they're affectionate and you can cuddle/play with them? Or more like mice, which are more like decoration?

Their personality does depend on the individual, but on average I would say it's in-between the two. They aren't usually as affectionate as rats are, and they need more socialization than mice. Chinchillas really need to be raised right, or you have this skittish animal that want to be your pal but is also scared of you. A lot of chinchillas end up in that limbo because people get them as decorations and don't spend time with them, but they do warm up to you if you start spending time with them

I've never met a friendly chinchilla so I don't know. I've met about 8 and all of them hated humans.
