I have never seen it before and i have no clue if it poses a threat or not
>>
>>2190820
It's an Argiope and no.
>>
Argiope bruennichi
In Hungary, they are called a "wasp spider".
Painful bite, don't piss it off.

this guy is right, I have a few of those in my garden

but
>Painful bite
what?

have you ever experienced it yourself?
because in my experience, they only are able to break the skin where it is really thin (e.g. elbows, earlobes,...)

Also, they do not even try to bite
>>
>>2190982
>Also, they * do not even try to bite
*usually

They are spreading over yurop. They profit from the climate change.

true

at least they do not have a bad influence on our native eco systems

Also, they look great and are interesting to watch
>>
Probably one of the most 'good guy' spiders you'll meet. They're very good at catching pets in gardens.

Is this true?

I raise Argiopes for reintroduction in lacking areas.

The chance of one biting you out of the blue is VERY LOW since their main defense mechanism is to "bungee jump and run" when scared. Handling them intentionally is difficult because they don't stay, they're always trying to escape. Argiopes don't jump up/forward, don't chase people, don't roam outside their webs, don't climb onto passing people unless someone walks right through their webs.
All Argiope related deaths are related to their "surprise" factor. Their webs are built around torso/head height in humans, and in some countries they're nicknamed "heart attack spider" after deaths of old people who walked through webs and suffered fear-induced heart attacks, realizing they had a hand sized spider on them. Argiope's venom is not harmful to humans, worst case scenario it causes itching or mild allergy.

I've personally handled literal hundreds of Argiopes and never been bit.

The ONLY time they bite, and that's almost guaranteed, is when they're on the web and you poke them/the web with fingers. Their preying behavior is to instantly run over and bite whatever lands on the web, be it an insect or finger. This is not out of defense, just feeding behavior.
To get them out of the web without biting, you often have to destroy the web, but that's not bad for them since they rebuild the web every morning (at least most do). Just be considerate and handle them in the evening so you're causing less harm than you'd by destroying a fresh web in the morning.

So if my dog rans out, I can ask these guys to catch it?
>>
>>2191060
depends on the size, but they will try to, if you ask nicely
They are better at catching cat tho

But if your pet leaves your garden, not even the Argiopes can catch them
>>
>>2191068
Would it be easier to teach Argiopes to catch things outside the garden or just gardenify my home city?
>>
>>2191052

Being a military dude that's done a lot of cross-country movements at night, I have inadvertently walked through a metric shit-ton of those webs and never once got bitten. The little dudes just scamper away...pissed off, no doubt.
>>
>>2191042
No chance for them to reach Scandinavia then? Fuck, it sounded too good to be true.

Argiope-anon here, I can imagine! It's great that they just attack small things that land on the web (insects, leaves, poking fingers), never bigger animals or people. Still feels creepy as hell to feel such a big spider running across you in the dark. Like I said, Argiopes are my passion, but something very primal gets triggered inside me when I see a flash of black, yellow and many legs on my chest/face.

And don't even get me started on Nephila spiders, those fuckers are the most beautiful spiders in all of nature but can get as big as a plate. Unlike Argiope, they bite if angered.

Unrelated but related: Pic is the gorgeous Argiope Argentata, these are the ones I raise. They shine like coins in the afternoon sun. I find it fascinating how nature can produce such a gorgeous texture and color palette in such a tiny animal.
>>
>>2191095
absolutely awesome
can you tell us a bit more about your work please?

Also, speking of Nephila, do you know how big N. fenestrata can get (body length and leg span)?
I canĀ“t seem to find any valid info on this species
>>
>>2191133
>tell us a bit more about your work

This.

What's wiping these dudes out, pesticides or some shit?

bumping for interest

One of "my" A. bruennichi females produced an egg sac today
>>
>>2191042
What? They're already established in middle Germany and have been seen as far north as Berlin. Some are even in the UK.
>>
>>2191723
Nice
I haven't heard of that before

learning something new every day

but I have to say, scandinavia is highly unlikely
>>
OP here, thanks guys, i feel safer now.
Fyi for those interested i live in belgium, if you'd wonder where i spotted him
>>
>>2191723
I can corroborate that too. I'm from Thuringia (middle Germany) - I've seen these since the mid 90s.
>>
>>2191081
They are here in the Netherlands, but have yet to see one up north in Frisia.
I like 'em, found one monday when I was taking a long walk. In the city!

we get these all over the place in Texas

they look spoopy but they're pretty harmless
>>
>>2194910
looks awesome, which species is that?
>>
>>2194463
I just looked it up, and I found out that there were sightings of it all over Sweden(except for the northernmost parts), including the area in which I live.

I guess I've got to be more attentive.
>>

Aurantia.
>>
>>2195042
nice
I've never seen an aurantia like that
>>
>>2195046
I don't know how common lighter morphs are, but they exist.
