The plant general: Tequila Agave edition
>Last christmas, agave you my heart
>But the very next day, you gave it away

Welcome to /plant/, the magical green place on this blue board. ITT: We summon plont, grow avocados and also, RIP S. Flava division. Press 'F' to pay respects.

/Plant/ is for the discussion of plants (obviously). Horticulturists, hobbyists and botanists welcome! Questions about plants? Want to show off your two inch dick-I mean plant? Maybe you want to start growing something new and exciting? Well come on over to /plant/!

Introducing a new basic caresheet with every thread:
Nepenthes Ampullaria x Lady Luck
>Does well as an intermediate, highland or lowlander
>Bright filtered sun, never direct unless you live in the tropics I guess
>Moderately high humidity, >55%
Unless you like black pitcher tendrils
>Water 3-5 times a week, with pure H2O
A dry Nepenthes is a dead Nepenthes
>Make sure medium is well draining, not too finicky about pH
I'm using 2 parts shredded LFS to 1 part bark, but that's a pretty lazy and shit media t b h
>Keep temperature above 65F at all times
>Don't induce dormancy on your Nepenthes
If it looks like it's going dormant, it's not.
It's dead.

N. ventricosa and alata are fantastic species, there's just surprisingly few people who actually grow pure ones (and alata is almost non-existent in cultivation). Anyway there are fuckloads of beginner-friendly, easy and fast species, including: maxima, boschiana, sanguinea, spathulata, burkei, petiolata, copelandii, many more. Of course hybrids will be even faster and easier, and most of the species above can be readily found in cheap BE hybrids.

Well I won't do it mainly because I live on the other side of the pond (well, two ponds if you count the mediterranean sea) but I think it'd be better than selling them to newies for 1€ each or giving them away to friends, it's a shame they are endangered.
>>
>>2190411
Well they're just technically vulnerable but I highly would not recommend you give them away. They will die if you're friends don't give a flying fuck about them.

Hi /plant/, a bit of an academic question for ya'll. Who or what would you talk to if you had a case for a species to be deemed invasive even though it officially isn't?

Context is Utricularia inflata, or swollen bladderwort. Its a carnivorous Aquarian flower stemming from the US southeastern coastal region that uses vacuum traps to suck up animal life around it. In and of its self a cool plant with a pretty, floating flower.

Problem is its listed as being native to Tennessee, when in fact it only lives in a single man made pond in a single county and I'm collecting evidence that suggests a 1989 global survey of the genus which was heavily relied upon to draw up its native boundaries in the US was in error.

I'm not a botanist so I'm not sure what organizations or people I should present my findings to once I've finished digging. Any suggestions?
>>
>>2191812
No idea who the authorities on Utrics are, but it might be worth contacting the ICPS about it? I'm sure one of the old farts there would know more about the matter.

What the fug this cactus is making a gigantic flower for no reason. It came from a piece of another cactus growing in a friend's yard when I visited them in Florida. I just broke a little nubbin off and planted it, probably about five years ago.

Don't think so, dragon fruit is usually long and spindly, this was planted in the ground and was a decent sized column.

>>2192302
That looks like it could be it? I'll take a picture when the flower opens. hopefully I'll get some seeds, how would I germinate them?
>>
>>2192431

Cactus seeds aren't too hard to get going. Soak the seeds overnight. Use a mostly sand with a little peat starting soil. Place the seeds on top of the surface of the soil, do not press them in. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of sand. Keep the surface of the soil damp, but not soaked. It's better to use a spray bottle to keep them wet. Put a layer of plastic wrap over the pot, or seal the whole thing in a ziplock back. Then just keep them warm and in the sun.

>>2195761
Well, I'll give you a brief caresheet
>They are full sun plants, they need at least 4 hours of sunlight per day.
>They live in marshes, bogs, and swampy areas in general, so they dehydrate fast. The best way to water them is to keep them with a small dish of water under their pot, and refill it when the substrate is -almost- dry (never let them dry completely).
>They go through a dormancy period in winter never deprive them from it.
>They need low mineral content water (distilled, demineralized, osmotized, rain, etc) it has to be <80 ppm
>The ideal soil has to be something acidic and well drained. Non fertilized peat moss with quartz sand or perlite, live or dry sphagnum moss are the best ones for these plants.
>Never fertilize. That'd kill them.
> in spring they'll start growing flower stems, they weaken them a lot, cut them up, because you don't want to be growing them from seed until you have some experience. If well cared for, they'll clone themselves anyway.

Hi /an/ons. I'm hoping for some plant ideas for my situation-

My neighbors have a couple little annoying kids at the age where they might think shooting my dog with a BB gun would be funny. Also, one of my big bushes blocking the view between our yards mysteriously died (I think herbicide). There's a 4ft chain link fence between our yards.

What super thorny plants can I plant along that fence? Naturally dense plants under partial sunlight would be a huge bonus as well, and might even be better than something thorny. Any mix of plants could be cool too. Zero upkeep would be ideal, but if it needs a little help now and then that's fine.

I'm in USDA zone 7a-b. Southeast US, Georgia.
http://www.plantmaps.com/interactive-georgia-usda-plant-zone-hardiness-map.php.

And yeah, I'll be trying to find some on my own, just asking for plant ideas if there are any cool plant ideas for this. Thanks.
>>
>>2195803
Do these kids even have BB guns, or are you just worried that they might get some and then decide it's a good idea to shoot a strangers dog?

Just worried... the little kid did not seem very well behaved. I know I shot insects with BB guns as a kid myself and my uncle's dog has a couple BB's in him (he's a rescue.) The main concern though is just with putting up a new plant barrier since the current bush seems to have been killed off.

I ordered the seed mixtures from a company that specialises in native plants and archaeophytes and I'm already in the habit of searching and removing invasives from the place before they go out of control so few worries there. I did, however, also use the opportunity to order a couple of baggies of Artemisia campestris, which is known to be allergenic, but that's going into my own garden to join my other Artemisias.

Hey /plant/ I don't know if you remember my experiment feeding Dionaea, basically I took three clones of the same plant (sawtooth) and feed them in different amounts.
The reasons I chose this clone are:
- I am 100% sure that the three plants are genetically identical
- This plant reproduces a lot, if one of them died I couldn't care less
- It's easy to trick toothless clones with inanimate food

First: the well feed one. Every time a trap ia fully developed I feed it, it has grown a lot and became a semiadult.

And finally a plant I've been ignoring. Admittedly it was smaller than the other two when I started with this but not only hasn't grown, it has actually become smaller.

Conclusion: flytraps benefit a lot from getting prey, not only do they develop faster, but they are also healthier if they eat.

Conclusion 2: Clones that are unable to get prey (wacky traps, error, rose, biohazard, etc..) will be small and unhealthy all of their existence.

>Tsuga (/ˈsuːɡə/,[3] from Japanese: 栂 (ツガ), the name of Tsuga sieboldii) is a genus of conifers in the pine family Pinaceae. Dank purp grew 4 new growing points... Surprised it recovered and adapted so quickly to growing out in this brutal summer weather. Can anyone tell me what to look for when purps go dormant? Mine is producing smaller pitchers now, and the old ones are getting woodier in texture, but since I've never grown sarrs, I don't know if producing offshoots this late in the season is normal

On another note, my amp x vents and truncata suddenly threw fits and dropped their pitchers... Must be the constant AC that's pissing them off. Robbie seems unhazed though. Anyone else have their neps drop pitchers when AC kick into high gear? I don't recall this ever happening to me

Purps are beasts, I forgot about mine and fried it in a half-made terrarium without water for a week, killed about 95% of it, and a month on it's like nothing happened.

And that doesn't sound great regarding your neps, for truncata to go apeshit your humidity must have really hit rock bottom. We don't need AC in the UK so I can't really advise anything, just see if there's a safer place to grow them away from it.
Pic related, recent shot of my rob preparing to pitcher.
>>
>>2197104
Yeah Purps are fucking magic. I got mine and I didn't give it time to adjust or anything. I just ripped it out of the box, dropped it into its pot, and into the sun it went. We had a week and a half of straight 40-45C, with like 0% RH and the fucking little shit wasn't even fazed. But I still don't know if it's going dormant or not

Here in California, it's been brutal lately. I moved my truncata out of my room to make room for new baby neps and growing rob, but since there isn't a humidifier downstairs where truncata now sits, it gets about 20-30% relative humidity, or so. I dunno, I just read somewhere that AC can dramatically lower the humidity in a room.
>>
>>2197109
Shit mate, 20-30% is dire desu. You should ideally be aiming for at least 70% for most neps, but I guess that's fairly impossible indoors with AC.
>>
>>2197175
20-30 Is indeed shit. >>2197109 You need to mist your truncata or something man otherwise you'll never get any really nice pitchers

If I wanted to start growing the native pitcher plants, would I need to start growing the moss first? They seem extremely hard to take care of.

I'd want some plants that were cloned or grown from seed, none that were collected from the wild. Is there a way to check that sort of thing or is it just more knowing who you're buying from?

Also wild seed collecting is OK from what I understand, and I don't know why you wouldn't, there's more diversity. If I were in LA, I'd do it, since most large online retailers have the same like 2 clones being marketed over and over again

I think all of the clones with cupped traps are functional, su you just place a live insect in it, holding it down with tweezers until the trap has closed enough. Yo can force the trap to close if you do it gently, "massaging" it. That's how I feed turtle food to mine. Toothless clones are very easy to trick this way because they close really fast.

I made a video for this but it's in spanish...

Friend bought a pitcher plant because another friend bought one, she didn't know how to take care of it. Took it off her hands, is there still a chance it can live? It has one pitcher left and I'm pretty sure it's not supposed to be that dark. The tips of the leaves look like they can grow new ones, but considering the state of the plant I'm not entirely sure it can.

Be straight with me, is this guy fucked?
>>
>>2197605
Nah, it will recover in a few months, cut the dry parts if they bother you and follow the caresheets. That is a Nepenthes x Ventrata, pretty resilient hybrid.
>>
>>2197605
>>2197612
This. Remove the crinkly brown dead bits of you want, take time to look at the anatomy of the plant, how it grows etc (for example it recently had the top cut off), Google other ventrata and you'll see yours isn't doing terribly. It evidently just needs time to settle in, good humidity and lighting will get it pitchering in no time.

>>
>>2197880
If you can't find peat moss I've been growing a ventrata in 1/3 coconut fiber, 1/3 pine needles (bark works equally well but needles are free in my house) and 1/3 quartz sand. Mine has been in there for 2 years and flowered last spring, so it'll be fine.
BTW do not try this mixture with other carnivorous plants except nepenthes.
>>
>>2197880
Checked on the soil again, touched it and noticed some really tiny bugs immediately burrow into it. Is there any way to get rid them without harming the plant?
>>
>>2198032
Just poured in some water and a lot just started coming out, gonna set it outside until I finish this errand.
>>
>>2198032
Well the best you can do is clean the roots which Nepenthes don't like at all.
Also throw all the substrate away and pulverize the plant with potassic soap from time to time
>>
>>2198049
Just to confirm, clean the roots with distilled water?
>>
>>2198165
Yesh
>>
>>2198165
Always. When handling carnivores, always use distilled water. Even filling the pitchers with hard water might kill them so they are very sensitive.
>>
>>2198400
Well, I use osmotized water...
For nepenthes I'd say they tolerate 200 ppm approximately, the rest of carnivorous plants should never be watered with more than 100 ppm. And 80 ppm for VFT just to be safe.
>>
>>2198049
Can you be more specific about how often I should spray it with potassic soap? Looks like a small spider decided to make itself at home and a centipede just crawled out of the pot. Also, I think a couple of those tiny bugs are starting to learn to fly.

Caladium+Pot+001[1].jpg

Hello /an/, I've grown Caladiums for the first time this year. (Pic is not mine.)

I grew roughly a dozen bulbs in a large pot, so I'm assuming if each bulb split there could be up to 2 dozen bulbs now.

Anyway, I would like to hear what you guys recommend for overwintering the bulbs. I live in Zone 7 (Oklahoma to be exact), and the packaging on the bulbs said that the minimum temperature is higher than the lowest it can get here.

I've considered splitting the bulbs into 3 groups- 1 group kept in the pot outdoors, 1 group dug up and stored in doors, and 1 group buried in the ground in a garden.

Thoughts? What would be a good time of the year to do this? I don't want to transplant them too late and kill them.

Crassula muscosa. In my experience, it roots easily from cuttings and grows fairly quickly, so you can at least get new plants from it.

Maybe try covering them once winter comes, if you live somewhere with a relatively mild winter. They could survive to next year. I had one in a pot that I'd move inside and it lived for 3 years.

So work was slow today because of the holiday weekend.

I got a chance to go to this bonsai nursery on the other side of Houston and as it turns out, the guy who runs it is the president of the club that I've been thinking of going and joining.

I stayed and talked to most of the people working, and they're all members of the club too.

One guy I spoke to helped me to pick out a better beginner tree that could be styled like one of the humongous live oak trees you sometimes see down here in the south. We also talked about my being a beginner, the club, why we both enjoyed bonsai, etc.

Went to check out and he gave me a tiny little bougainvillea as a gift.

Hey /plant/, i need a bit of advice.
I live in sweden, and it gets pretty cold here, fluctuating between -10c in the winter to 30c in the summer. I tend to keep my window open a lot cause hey cold is nice.
I would like advice on what kind of potted plant i could get to raise that would do well in temps like these, preferably beginner friendly, and fast growing (so it doesn't take a year for 6millimeters)
Any ideas on a plant that would work here?
>>
>>2207461
Yeah, but your room probably won't go below 15°C. Go for the standard forgiving green plants from home impovement stores or stores like Aldi and Lidl also have them sometimes and they're very cheap.
Another thing you can do is ask people you know for some plantlets or cuttings. Those usually work out great ("natural" selection usually gets rid of plants that don't tolerate beginners)
