There's some rather large, black beetles in our cellar sometimes. Does anyone know what species they are?

It's a water beetle.

Common Ground Beetle, Carabus something, can't remember what species but it's the most common one in the UK.
Looks like a darkling beetle. Predatory (eat other bugs) as adults.
If you have rotting wood down there they may be eating it as larvae (the larvae are essentially like mealworms)

Key it out with a dichotomous key.
You'll probably need a magnifying device of some sort.

Remembered it, Pterostichus melanarius. Ignore the other anons, they're taking the piss.
Thanks everyone? Do you think I should do something about it?
And it's not in water btw
Well... it is now, down the toilet
everyone.*

Leave them alone. They eat slugs and other undesirables, they're good guys.
Hm, maybe I'll throw them outside like I do with spiders. They are so creepy though, and one of them once bit my sister too
