I go with linden, or basswood as is it is known in Burgerland. It is good for the soil, which in turn results into more undergrowth.
Conker tree or horse chestnut is a tree I find beautiful.
New Zealand has some cool trees such as the cabbage tree and lancewood.
maple and black spruce

Maple is a good choice. I personally do not like conifers that much with exception of the southern hemisphere ones, such as monkey puzzle and Norfolk pines.
Araucaria araucana. I find the whole Araucaria genus spiffy.
Out of trees grown in my region, my favourite is the silver willow.

Catalpa speciosa
>wood is soft enough to make for fun whittling and carving
>doesn't rot easily, so a copse of catalpa will almost always have good, dead standing firewood available
>doesn't drop limbs, so safe to camp under
>in late spring/summer, catalpa sphinx caterpillars provide excellent fish bait
>absolutely gorgeous when flowering

I only know of Catalpa bignonioides, I think it is a pretty tree.
Liriodendron tulipifera
My favorite local native, grows tall and stately with a perfect straight trunk. Has a rather large flower for a big tree. Nice bright yellow in autumn. Smells nice.
Normie level: Oaks. They get cooler-looking with age.
Hipster level: London Plane Tree. The bark is soft and looks really cool, like natural camouflage. Easy to climb as well.

Planes/sycamores are a real favorite of mine, as they make me think of the comfy old stream/river valley towns around here and the trees look especially good when old, fat and gnarly.
I like wingnuts and witchhazel too.
