Hey, /an/,
>mom insists on having a microshit dog years ago
>shiztzu female now about 13 years old
>terrified of rain/thunder/lightning
If she even so much as mistakes the sprinklers for rain she'll start shaking and will shit or piss the house rather than going outside. We've tried everything in the books to get her to stop associating rain with fear but with no luck. Ignoring her didn't work, giving treats when it rained didn't work, forcing her out into the rain while we stood next to her in it didn't work, penning obviously didn't do shit, and it all just seemed to reinforce her fear response. Thing is, she's never had a physically traumatic experience involving water so we're not sure how to go about reconditioning her.
>inb4 get a real dog
>inb4 euthanize
First this has nothing to do with the dog being a microshit. I've known people with 80 pound dogs who get so terrified by thunder they shit themselves. I've also seen collies terrified of rain, and many others. This is a dog problem in general.
Have you tried a Thunder Shirt? It is a tight fittint dog shirt designed to reduce anxiety. It doesn't treat the underlying anxiety, but it can reduce their stress. I would give that a shot, and if it does not woek, then consult with a professional behaviorist.

>thunder shirt
We considered it but never bothered because we figured it'd be useless. But I suppose since everything else doesn't seem to work it might be worth trying.

I have seen thunder shirts work. But I have seen them not do much. I guess it depends ultimately on the dog. Some absolutely do not like it. I guess if it doesn't work, you could always take it back.

I've had friends and coworkers swear by them, or think they just do nothing. It's not a 100% thing, but it also isn't just some dumb scam. They can work and do sometimes work, so it is definitely worth a shot.
I've a shih tzu who, if he could, would fly up into the atmosphere and wrestle the lightning out of zeus' own hand.
It's not the breed at fault.

For some reason, I pictured a shitzu flying through the sky with superman pose into ominous dark clouds with Zeus rearing back to throw a bolt.
Made me smile.
