Cats are intelligent, but pretend to be independent. The trick is to go though the motions of feeding and leaving water around, but not play or give pats unless they come to you.
Picking up cats also has to be done in a way that suits them. My cat only lets me pick her up if I use one hand as a 'floor' to support her back paws. She likes feeling stable.
