Grey fox are common. They are legal to hunt. In the US, the rarest is likely the swift fox. They are endangered.

I'm from Monterey and the whole sea otter population recovery thing is a big deal there because their odds were just as bad as these guys for a while. West coast sea otters have made an awesome recovery in the last few decades.
